NALIP Announces the Mercury Latino Lens Short Film Challenge Finalists

This past summer the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) teamed up with Ford Lincoln MERCURY and Miami’s Zubi Advertising to search for up-and-coming Latino/a filmmakers.  The Mercury Latino Lens Short Film Challenge invited directors to submit their scripts for the opportunity to make 5 minute shorts, and compete for the Grand Prizes.  From a pool of hundreds of hopefuls, a Blue Ribbon panel of judges, including directors Rodrigo Garcia (NINE LIVES, “Carnivale”), Gabriela Tagliavini (LADIES NIGHT) and Robert Rodriguez (SPY KIDS, DESPERADO) selected six Finalists: three students and three emerging filmmakers.  Each Finalist was awarded $10,000 to produce and direct their original short films on digital video, and will continue on to the on-line judging round starting October 1, competing for two Grand Prizes.

The six finalists are:

Student Filmmakers
Elvira Carrizal (“Quiero Ser Payaso”) in New York City
Xochitl Dorsey (“Tears and Tortillas”) in Monterey Park, CA
Elisa L. Menendez  (“Abuela”) in Miami, Florida

Emerging Filmmakers,
Sarah Duran (“ Girls Night Out”) in Los Angeles
Salvador Paniagua, Jr. (“Los Tamales”) in Playa Del Rey, CA
Akiva Penaloza (“ El Chivo”) in Maspeth, New York.

Congratulations to all and thank you to everyone who entered.

The six will present their films in a national online contest throughout the month of October.  Watch this space to join the general public in voting for the two Grand Prize winners. The winning student will receive a $5,000 scholarship and an HDV camera, and the emerging filmmaker will receive a $5,000 cash grant and an all-expense paid trip to the 2007 Sundance Film Festival with our NALIPsters in the Sundance program.

The Grand Prize winners will be screening their films in Los Angeles, San Antonio and Miami this October and November, then again at NALIP Conference 8 in Newport Beach, CA, March 8 – 11, 2007.

The theme for the challenge was  "Mucho Por Descubrir” (Much to Discover) as it relates to Latino representation and history in the U.S. "We are excited to see a lot of very creative interpretations of the theme and how these ideas relate to ourselves and our community,” said Kathryn Galan, NALIP Executive Director,  to Screen Magazine.  “I know that we will be entertained and surprised by the Final films!”

POP: Almodovar, Cruz and the Party Frenzy
"Volver" director Pedro Almodovar and Penelope Cruz, not surprisingly, caused quite a frenzy when they entered (a bit late) to their party for the film, which is having its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. A packed crowd waited inside a very warm Chanel store off Bloor in Toronto for the star arrivals, while crowds and photographers waited outside in the pouring rain. Once they arrived, they were wooshed upstairs and into a VIP area which became another frenzy with people trying their best to argue their way inside. "Volver" (meaning 'to return' is pronounced Vole-vair, NOT vole-vur) marks the Spanish-language return for Cruz, a veteran of past Almodovar films.
