NALIP Announces the Mercury Latino Lens Short Film Challenge Finalists

This past summer the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) teamed up with Ford Lincoln MERCURY and Miami’s Zubi Advertising to search for up-and-coming Latino/a filmmakers. The Mercury Latino Lens Short Film Challenge invited directors to submit their scripts for the opportunity to make 5 minute shorts, and compete for the Grand Prizes. From a pool of hundreds of hopefuls, a Blue Ribbon panel of judges, including directors Rodrigo Garcia (NINE LIVES, “Carnivale”), Gabriela Tagliavini (LADIES NIGHT) and Robert Rodriguez (SPY KIDS, DESPERADO) selected six Finalists: three students and three emerging filmmakers. Each Finalist was awarded $10,000 to produce and direct their original short films on digital video, and will continue on to the on-line judging round starting October 1, competing for two Grand Prizes.
The six finalists are:
Student Filmmakers
Elvira Carrizal (“Quiero Ser Payaso”) in New York City
Xochitl Dorsey (“Tears and Tortillas”) in Monterey Park, CA
Elisa L. Menendez (“Abuela”) in Miami, Florida
Emerging Filmmakers,
Sarah Duran (“ Girls Night Out”) in Los Angeles
Salvador Paniagua, Jr. (“Los Tamales”) in Playa Del Rey, CA
Akiva Penaloza (“ El Chivo”) in Maspeth, New York.
Congratulations to all and thank you to everyone who entered.
The six will present their films in a national online contest throughout the month of October. Watch this space to join the general public in voting for the two Grand Prize winners. The winning student will receive a $5,000 scholarship and an HDV camera, and the emerging filmmaker will receive a $5,000 cash grant and an all-expense paid trip to the 2007 Sundance Film Festival with our NALIPsters in the Sundance program.
The Grand Prize winners will be screening their films in Los Angeles, San Antonio and Miami this October and November, then again at NALIP Conference 8 in Newport Beach, CA, March 8 – 11, 2007.
The theme for the challenge was "Mucho Por Descubrir” (Much to Discover) as it relates to Latino representation and history in the U.S. "We are excited to see a lot of very creative interpretations of the theme and how these ideas relate to ourselves and our community,” said Kathryn Galan, NALIP Executive Director, to Screen Magazine. “I know that we will be entertained and surprised by the Final films!”
NALIP Member Hugo Perez to Present His Work In Progress Feature Documentary “In the Footsteps of Orpheus” At the Prestigious 2006 IFP Market

NALIP Member Hugo Perez will be presenting his work in progress feature documentary “In the Footsteps of Orpheus” at the prestigious 2006 IFP Market. He would like to invite any of his fellow industry members who are attending the market to join him for the screening of work in progress segments of his documentary.
In the Footsteps of Orpheus
A Feature Documentary Produced and Directed by Hugo Perez
SYNOPSIS: When the Hungarian poet Miklos Radnoti was shot into a mass grave in 1944 after a two-month death march, he did not know whether his poems would survive. Eighteen months later, when his body was exhumed, a notebook was found in his coat pocket that contained his final poems, poems that documented the final months of his life as a prisoner of the Nazi alliance. Through interviews and the poet's own words, 'In the Footsteps of Orpheus' will tell the story of Miklos Radnoti who believed in the life of his poems even when he knew that he himself would not survive.
In the Footsteps of Orpheus segments will be screened:
Wednesday, September 20th at Noon in Angelika Theatre 4
