"A hard working Chicano father with the DWP nicknames his twin sons Water & Power, and emboldens them to take the world by its reins. These, he is confident, will be great men who one day will help shape the city of Los Angeles. There can be no power without water, and no water without power. Years later Water is an ambitious state senator. Power is a top-ranking lieutenant with the LAPD. The brothers soon find themselves at opposite ends of an abuse-of-power city scandal, on its way to crisis. Who really runs the streets of LA? The police? The gangs? The politicians?"

Grupo de Teatro Sinergía Proudly Announces New Dates and Times for the Last Performances of LISTEN...!!!

Written and directed by Ruben Garfias and performed by our Acting for Children and Youth students

Last weekend’s performances were totally sold out, so we highly recommend you make reservations, now!

LISTEN...!!! is a workshop production based on a theme that should be anathema to children and all humanity...war. That in the 21st century the very pornographic idea of war to solve conflict or advance an agenda runs contrary to all other advancements in our human time line and yet it is all too present. How to express that moment when in the blink of an eye all that we knew to be common is now turned into rubble and fire and pain. This is the path these young actors decided to confront in the hope and expectation that their lives be made more whole, their minds more rigorous and their path to peace ever more constant.

LISTEN...!!! will be performed at the Frida Kahlo Theater, 2332 West Fourth Street, Los Angeles, CA 90057; Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8:00 PM; Sundays at 6:00 PM. Saturday September, 9 at 5:00 and at 8:00 PM and Sunday September 10 at 6:00 PM.

Tickets are $8 general; $5 for children, students with ID, and senior citizens.

For more information and reservations call us at: 213-382-8133. Our offices are open Tuesday through Sundays 1 to 6 PM. or visit our website: www.fridakahlotheater.org

CASTING CALL: Los Angeles, CA

Playwrights' Arena is now accepting submissions for it's upcoming production of CONJUNTO, written by Oliver Mayer. The production, which will be produced and directed by Jon Lawrence Rivera, will open November 10th and play weekends at Studio/Stage in Hollywood through Dec. 10. Rehearsals will begin October 10th. The casting director is Raul Clayton Staggs (Assoc. Artistic Director for Playwrights' Arena)

Set against the backdrop of World War II and the threat of internment for Japanese-Americans, CONJUNTO tells the story of Japanese, Filipino and Mexican-American farm workers who labor together on a California farm. The war and the internment forces the characters to examine their identities--some coping with their difficult lives by fantasizing about the popular film icons of the day. All roles require actors with strong theater training/background.

Now casting the following characters:
GENOVEVO - Latino, 30s-40s. Leading man type preferred. Mexican-born foreman of the pickers at the Yamada strawberry farm. Doubles as 1940s moviestar JORGE NEGRETE. Must be fluent in English and Spanish. He has an old-fashioned view of what a man should be -- silent, strong, gentlemanly, quietly suffering.

MIN YAMADA - Japanese American male, 30s-40s. Inherited the Yamada farm from his father; completely Americanized, Japanese in name only. Must double as both GENE AUTRY and as a kind of TOSHIRO MIFUNE, so he needs to do both a Western and a Japanese accent. He likes to sing Ink Spots style songs.

SHOKO YAMADA - Japanese female, 25-35. Brought from Japan to be Min's bride; Japanese accent and culture are obvious. In certain dream sequences she loses the accent entirely. She battles between desires and duty, and must find a way to make an impossible situation work at the end of the play.

TED YAMADA - Japanese American 20s-30s, male. Min's younger brother, completely Americanized. Must double as Gene Autry's sidekick FROG, a kind of Walter Brennan character. Sings Frank Sinatra style in Act Two. He is a secret drug user (cocaine, heroin) which brings him in contact with Pichuka.

PICHUKA - Latina, 20s-30s. Gang-girl drug dealer who wears zoot suits and acts like a man. Has what becomes a romance with Ted, and a sexualized love/hate relationship with Genovevo. Speaks (and SINGS) a hepcat lingo with a bilingual tinge.

ESQUINCLE - Mexican 30s-50s, male. A kind of clown, whether Cantinflas or Chaplin, of the migrant picker world. Very bilingual, sings in Spanish, dances. Genovevo's best friend, he retains his spirit even as he is physically beaten down. Doubles as PEDRO INFANTE in the dream scene, so humor is paramount, as well as charm.

MACIAS - Mexican 20s, male. Youthful Jalisco native who becomes one of the first Braceros to arrive in Southern California. Sings in Spanish, speaks some Spanish in the play. He learns the hard realities of migrant life and by the end of the play matures emotionally. Native American Indian qualities (physical and otherwise).

ARNULFO - Filipino, 30s-50s, male. Longtime picker on Genovevo's team at the Yamada farm. Undergoes identity crisis during the internments as he finds the balance between his Spanish and Asian qualities. A gambler, a bit of a bullshit artist, and a surprisingly good businessman.

FBI MAN - Anglo, 30s-50s. Does surveillance on the Yamada farm. Must enfore the internment proceedings. He is the voice of the actual official language on the notices. His own opinions are not identical, but his duty forces him to act.

SHERIFF - Anglo, 20s-40s. The muscle behind the enforcement. Doubles as the INS MAN, who enforces the Bracero Program. Both characters are ignorant/innocent of Japanese and Mexican cultures.

Hard copy submissions must be received by September 12th to be considered. Submissions may be mailed to:
