Athol Fugard’s "Hello And Goodbye," Produced and Directed by Brazilian Born Jonny Kahleyn Opens Friday, September 22, 2006
Often staged as a vicious tale of family dysfunction, this unique production takes a different look at its characters, Johnny and Hester. Brother and sister reunite after a 15 year separation. Johnny has stayed at home, the faithful caregiver to a crippled and abusive father. Hester returns home, streetwise and angry, to claim her share of their father’s disability benefits that have been stashed away for
decades. In this unique portrayal, actors Jonny Kahleyn and Kate Vozoff offer a bittersweet snapshot of raw emotional pain, the courage of forgiveness and hope, rather than an embittered hatefut outlook. A brave lesson to be taken seriously for the survival of those who have known illness and abuse.
Opens Friday, September 22, 2006
Runs Friday ~ Sunday until October 1st. Performances: 7:30 PM Friday
and Saturday 5:00 PM on Sunday.

Finishing Fundraiser Party for Independent Feature
Students Like Us By NALIP Member Dianna M. Perez

1915 Mill Rd.
South Pasadena, CA 91030
Saturday September 9th
8pm.
Synopsis:
Students Like Us is the coming of age store of Andrea, a Latina college student. Her dad has been working diligently her whole life since her mom passed away to ensure that she would receive a college education. Pragmatically, their collective goal is that Andrea be a business major. With this, Andrea will not be held down by the glass ceiling that existed for Dad, Lalo his whole career at the manufacturing plant where he works. However, when Andrea takes her first Art
Studio class at the university, she realizes that her passion is Art.
Andrea has to decide if she is going to be the person she dreams of becoming at the expense of disappointing the very person who has sacrificed so much of his life so that she could be there. And Lalo, her father, has to decide if he can let go of his own dreams for his daughter so that she may live her own.
Andrea's coming of age journey takes place at a public University campus in Southern California where over 50% of our population is Latino but we still make up less than 12% of the student population. Based on the real incidents of organizing the first "Raza College Day" at the UCSB campus, Andrea's story is set against a landscape of a politically charged campus as she and the group of Chicano/Latino students on campus decide to take on the administration and fight for their right to independently hold an outreach and recruitment day to encourage and help the Latino youth in the area aspire and apply to the neighboring universities.
Donations of any amount will be accepted. I thank you all in advance for being part of this important process with us.

Young San Diego Filmmakers Sought to Produce Two New Documentaries As Part Of Barrio Logan: Voices Of Change
The Media Arts Center San Diego’s Teen Producers Project is currently accepting student applications from local youth who have a strong interest in documentary filmmaking and the community. Youth-producers will research and document the personal life stories and experiences to create two documentary videos about Father Richard Brown and Mr. Victor Ochoa. These videos will be used as a lens for exploring the changing cultural, economic, and political realities of Barrio Logan. The project will give voice to these community heroes and provide instructive models for leadership, community building and civic engagement. Youth documentation of residents’ life histories strengthens communities by re-building intergenerational ties, training future leaders, preserving local stories, and offering a model to help other communities’ preserve their culture. The short documentaries to be produced, along with the first short documentary produced in August for the Voices of Change series entitled, Roger Cazares: A Passion For Justice, will premiere at the 14th annual San Diego Latino Film Festival in March. Barrio Logan: Voices of Change the series will also be available on DVD and distributed to local libraries, schools and community groups. To watch recently produced stories on-line, click here.
Local San Diego youth enrolled in the video production, education and training program will begin production on two short 10-15 minute documentaries profiling Father Richard Brown, longtime resident priest of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Barrio Logan and Victor Ochoa, Chicano muralist, activist and teacher. The 15-week after-school program will begin Tuesday, September 26 and will take place at MAAC Project’s Mercado Apartments, an affordable housing complex located in the heart of Barrio Logan. Classes will be held on Tuesday’s from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Barrio Logan: Voices of Change is a continuation of last year’s digital storytelling project Youth Voices – Community Stories that helps to sustain, support, celebrate and maintain community identity and pride in an area that is widely regarded as a spiritual center for Latino civic engagement.
Community Partners for the Barrio Logan project are the Barrio Logan College Institute, and the San Diego Historical Society.
Funding for the project comes from the Stuart Foundation, California Technology Foundation, the Commission for Arts & Culture and the MAAC Project.
