National PBS Premiere on P.O.V.
Tuesday, August 1 at 10 p.m.
(check your local listings)
The proud Mexican tradition of corrido music-captured in the performances of Mexican band Los Tigres del Norte and the late Chalino Sanchez-provides both heartbeat and backbone to this rich examination of songs, drugs and dreams along the U.S./Mexico border. Al Otro Lado follows Magdiel, an aspiring corrido composer from the drug capital of Mexico, as he faces two difficult choices to better his life: to traffic drugs or to risk his life crossing the border illegally into the United States. Performance footage by corrido superstars are interspersed with the day-to-day struggles of Magdiel as he embarks on an uncertain journey. Al Otro Lado explores the world of drug smuggling, illegal immigration, and the corrido music that chronicles it all.

Deadline Extension For Sag Contracted Films
NBC Comedy Short Cuts Submissions Due August 7

In support of Screen Actors Guild and the many options they offer to independent filmmakers to work with SAG actors under an agreement that honors the standards and protections of their Guild, NBC Universal has agreed to extend the Comedy Short Cuts deadline for films produced under SAG experimental short, student film or other agreements. The new deadline is August 7, 2006.

Semi-finalists’ films will be screened before an industry audience in New York on August 29, and finalists will be sent to L.A. for an exclusive screening on September 20. All finalists will be screened at NBC’s soon-to-be-launched comedy Internet channel www.DotComedy.com in September.
The winning filmmaker will be given the chance to pitch to NBC comedy
development and meet with top executives at Rogue Pictures and Focus Features. Additional prizes and opportunities are soon to be announced.

SAGIndie's New Diversity Series Calls for Films
SAGIndie has announced the launch of a new diversity screening series, a program dedicated to promoting films with a diverse cast and/or diverse themes.
The series, created in association with the Screen Actors Guild, was established with the goal of increasing employment opportunities for performers of all types, especially in diverse or low-budget projects.
The screenings will be held quarterly in New York and Los Angeles, with other cities to follow.
SAGIndie has also issued a call for submissions of films that fit specific criteria.
To be considered for inclusion, email indiespotlight@sag.org, with subject line "Diversity Submission."
The inaugural diversity screening will be Michael Kang's new film The Motel, which The New York Times called a "perfectly observed portrait" that "captures the glum desperation of inhabiting the biological limbo of early adolescence."
