NALIP Congratulates Its Nominees to the ABC and Walt Disney Studios New Talent Competition:
Amparo García-Crow and Bernadette Rivero

NALIP members Amparo García-Crow and Bernadette Rivero were selected to represent the organization as screenwriting finalists in ABC and Walt Disney Studio's Talent Development Scholarship Grant Program.

Chosen from a highly competitive field of entries, these two writers' projects have been submitted to the competition that grants $20,000 to support development and completion of polished work for fresh and emerging voices.

Amparo's script, “The Unknown Soldier” presents the tragic, true story of Gustavo (Gus) Garcia, a brilliant activist laywer/Latino hero whose efforts won a landmark case in the Supreme Court two months before the monumental Brown vs. Board of Education case. Borrowing from the vaudeville like “carpa” (the Mexican tent show) to tell Gus’ story---“The Unknown Soldier” is a show within a show. The historical tent show troupe known as “La Carpa Garcia,” comes alive again as Gus’ personal life becomes a public “tent show.”  We witness him heroically champion Latino’s civil rights at the cost of losing the quality of his own life and sanity; dying homeless on a park bench in San Antonio, Texas in 1964.

Bernadette's Native Son, is a feature-length drama about Cuba’s answer to Sherlock Holmes. The story ricochets between modern-day Miami and 1950’s Cuba, tied together by two generations of detectives with an unhealthy knowledge of ritualistic killings.

Latina Filmmakers and Writers:The Notion of Chicanisma Through Films and Novellas.

By Jennifer Watson Dean

Finding both contradiction and dialectical opposition in the Chicano Movement and the Women’s Liberation Movement, Chicanas began the Chicana Movement which addressed the specific needs of Chicanas as women of color in the United States.  The sense of sisterhood and feminist discourse that emerged within the Chicana Movement and thereafter came to be known as Chicanisma, which addressed the issues of race, class and gender and gave Chicanas a rightful name, voice and image.  As a way to express Chicanisma, Chicanas began to write literature and produce and direct films.  Six artists, Sylvia Morales, Margarita Cota-Cárdenas, Lourdes Portillo and Susana Blaustein Muñoz, Erlinda Gonzáles-Berry, Frances Salomé España and Denise Chávez, through their films and books, respectively, Chicana, Puppet: A Chicano Novella, La Ofrenda: The Days of the Dead, Paletitas de guayaba, El Espejo/The Mirror and Loving Pedro Infante, (re)discover and (re)present Chicana history through their works.
Through oral history research, Jennifer Watson Dean uncovers the philosophical and political underpinnings that have informed much Chicana cultural production. Latina Filmmakers and Writers cleverly situates Chicana literature and film at the perilous yet unique intersection of class, gender and race that critically defines the woman of color experience. She provides a thoughtful and honest account of Chicana creative expressions. Through her concept of Chicanisma, the author successfully outlines the contours of Chicana creative expressions. Through personal interviews and conversations with important Chicana writers and filmmakers, Jennifer Watson Dean identifies Chicana creative expressions as acts of social, cultural and political emancipation and protest.

ABC EXPANDS THE NUMBER OF SERIES DUBBED INTO SPANISH

Series Dubbed into Spanish Include Returning Hits “Desperate Housewives,” “Lost,” “Grey's Anatomy," "Dancing with the Stars," as well as ABC Comedies "George Lopez" and Fall Newcomer "Ugly Betty"

ABC, the first English language broadcast network to provide all regular primetime entertainment programming in Spanish via a combination of closed-captioning and dubbing, has increased the number of programs dubbed into Spanish, Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment has announced.

“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Lost,” “Dancing with the Stars,” “George Lopez” and Latino television phenomenon “Ugly Betty” will be dubbed into Spanish, with the remainder of the network’s regular primetime entertainment lineup available with Spanish language subtitles. In addition, select specials will also be dubbed into Spanish.

“Increasing the number of shows dubbed into Spanish reflects our commitment to successfully connecting with the millions of Hispanics who watch mostly or only Spanish language television,” said Mr. McPherson. “Offering relatable programming is how ABC continues to be on the forefront in reaching diverse segments of the population. No other English language network serves the Spanish speaking audience the way we do.”

Spanish subtitled versions of the shows will be found on Closed Caption 2 channel (CC2), and viewers will be able to access the programs dubbed in Spanish via the SAP (Second Audio Program) option on their televisions. ABC was the first English language broadcast network to make such a large portion of its programming available in Spanish.

Additional programming may be dubbed in Spanish in the future.

Seeking translator/transcriber

Flaming Angel Films seeks a translator initially for a "preliminary translation" on a couple of scenes from a short called “Nuevo Día” to help our editor move forward with the project. The translator/transcriber has the option of receiving the footage on DVD or translating in person- whatever is most convenient. The pay is a flat fee of around $50 for the first session.

When the short has been finished, we will need a translator for subtitles, which will be more hours and the pay will increase. We are also going to need a translator for the second part of the short that still needs to be shot in Mexico. We hope to find someone that can work with us over the length of this project.

If interested, please contact Sara at sara@flamingangelfilms.com
