2006 Latino Producers Academy Fellows

NALIP is very pleased to announce that the 2006 Latino Producers Academy Fellows were selected this week, drawn from a competitive pool of documentary and narrative producers and directors.  Submissions came from twelve states, and the choice was challenging for the professional panel. The list of accepted fellows is listed below.

The 2006 Fellows will participate in an exciting curriculum that combines the academic producer’s agenda of the Academy’s first two years with the production/post-production seminars of the third. Eleven feature producers attend in varying levels of development; four producers attend with their directors who will work with casts and professional crews to rehearse, shoot, edit, score and add some special effects for 3-5 scenes from their projects.

Ten documentary makers have projects in various stages, as well.  Four attend with rough-cuts on their work; they are invited with their editors so that they have intensive creative time together in the company of mentors and instructors on the remainder of their process. Six others are in development or production.

The program takes place in Tucson, Arizona in association with the University of Arizona Media Arts Department, the Hanson Film Institute and the UCLA Professional Certificate Program.

P.O.V.’s “Al Otro Lado” Chronicles U.S.-Mexico Border Culture and Conflicts Through the Tradition of Corrido Music
Tuesday, Aug. 1 on PBS at 10:00 PM

Songs, Drugs and Dreams Collide as Young Musician Faces Harsh Choices
In Search of a Better Life

Al Otro Lado (To the Other Side) tells the human story behind illegal immigration and drug trafficking between the U.S. and Mexico through the eyes of Magdiel, a 23-year-old fisherman and aspiring composer who dreams of a better life.  For people south of the border, the “other side” is the dream of an impossibly rich United States, where even menial jobs can support families and whole communities that have been left behind. For people north of the border, Al Otro Lado sheds light on harsh choices that their neighbors to the south often face because of economic crisis.

CINE CLUB! MONTHLY LATINO FILM SERIES July 21st

The San Diego Latino Film Festival is proud to present the great documentary: GRANITO DE ARENA at the upcoming June installment of the Cine Club! Monthly Latino Film Series.

When: Friday, July 21st at 6:30 p.m.
Cine Club! is FREE and OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC

For over 20 years, global economic forces have been dismantling public education in Mexico, but always in the constant shadow of popular resistance...
Granito de Arena is the story of that resistance—the story of hundreds of thousands of public schoolteachers whose grassroots, non-violent movement took Mexico by surprise, and who have endured brutal repression in their 25-year struggle for social and economic justice in Mexico's public schools. Award-winning Seattle filmmaker, Jill Freidberg (This is What Democracy Looks Like, 2000), spent two years in southern Mexico documenting the efforts of over 100,000 teachers, parents, and students fighting to defend the country’s public education system from the devastating impacts of economic globalization.
