PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Short #1: Clipping of Flowers
by Writer/Director Gloria Susan Zarate

Clipping of Flowers chronicles the early struggles
of a Latina writer's grandmother. As the writer pitches
her story, the parallels of her grandmother's tribulations
endured become a metaphor for those she endures in her own
world.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Short #2: INTELLIGENCE
by writer Tim Kernc and Director Allen Martinez

In present day Miami, COLLIN MATHERS, (Milo Ventimiglia -Rocky
Balboa, Cursed, Gilmore Girls) follows a hot lead to tie up
his feature story and reveal new graphic details behind closed
doors in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. His lead is an
elderly man with the story of a lifetime and has much more
intelligence than Collin had ever imagined.
And things get personal.
The background of this politically-charged story is based
on true historical events.

Short #3: Women With Altitude
by Writer/Director Sarah Vaill

Women With Altitude: Mind Over Mountains is a documentary
about American and Bolivian women's strength to move beyond
domestic violence. As a testimony to overcoming difficult
ordeals using strength and support, seven women set out from
San Francisco to climb a 20,000-foot peak in the Bolivian
Andes.
They discover their Bolivian counterparts face an uphill
battle of their own, lacking a single shelter in La Paz, the
capital of more than 1 million inhabitants. But three local
activists prove resilient and resourceful, on the issues as
much as on the snowy trek.
Beset by winter storms and altitude sickness, braving the
failure and fatalities of other teams on the mountain, the
Women With Altitude go for the summit with the Bolivian mindset
of querer es poder -If there's a will, there's a way.

Showcasing Hispanic Filmmaker Shorts in English and Spanish,
Users Will Vote On Best Films
Festival Opens with Five Online Premieres
While Hollywood is opening doors for Hispanic actors and
actresses in music, TV and film, Latinos that create the
actual entertainment programming are underrepresented.
AOL Latino, with sponsor Mercury Mariner, is now
giving Hispanic filmmakers the unique opportunity to showcase
their short films to millions of consumers online as part
of "El Festival De Cine Corto" available at http://entretenimiento.aol.com.
The English or Spanish-language short films ranging in all
different genres will be available on-demand beginning today.
Designed to showcase and discover the very best short-film
programming from Hispanic amateur and up-and-coming filmmakers
around the world, AOL Latino's Festival De
Cine Cortoenables movie fans, over four
months, to view and rate new films per week. In addition
to highlighting new releases and award-winning festival
favorites not seen by mass-market audiences, the Festival
kicks off with an open call for submissions through September
as part of the ongoing competition.
The top film each week will be eligible for the semi-final
round showcasing 16 of the top shorts. In December, the
top five films as voted by users will compete for the grand
prize including $5,000 and the chance to meet with a major
movie company. Celebrities and well-known film experts will
offer commentary online throughout the festival, but will
not select the winning films.
We are thrilled to give Hispanic filmmakers a major
outlet to showcase their works as part of AOL Latino's ongoing
commitment to be the destination for Latinos and Hollywood
on the web, said Angel Sepulveda, Director of Original
Programming, AOL Latino. We applaud Mercury for joining
with us in this first effort to become advocates for an
under-appreciated art form and to celebrate all of the Latino
unsung heroes of the short film world.
Mercury is proud to support the Latino film community
by sponsoring the AOL Latino 'Festival de Cine Corto
said Dave Rodriguez, multicultural marketing manager for
Ford and Lincoln Mercury brands. Independent film
is one of the passion points that Mercury is pursuing this

Silhouettes explore emigration and immigration through
the eyes of an artist and his interaction with immigrants

NALIP MEMBER WINS NYILFF/HBO
SHORTS COMPETITION
NALIP-New York member, Hugo
Perez, has been selected as the winner of the
2006 HBO/New York International Latino Film Festival
Short Film Script Award for his submision of Betty
La Flaca. Hugo Perez, whose 2005 award winning
short Julieta y Ramon was broadcast as part
of the Showtime Latino Filmmaker Showcase, will direct
the film. The HBO/NYILFF award comes with $15,000 in
funding from HBO. The completed short will make its
premiere at the NYILFF's opening night ceremony and
presented before every 2006 NYILFF evening feature screening.
Our collective congratulations to Hugo Perez.
ABOUT BETTY LA FLACA
Skinny Betty might just as well not
exist given the lack of attention she gets from men,
including her boyfriend Carlos. Her co-worker, Reina,
recommends she have some work done to enlarge and enhance
the most
important part of the body--her butt. When Betty arrives
at the homegrown 'clinica' in Olga's living room in
the Bronx, she has no idea how much impact a little
'work' will have on her life.
