Ricardo Montalban presents the Nosotros American Latino Film Festival

Ricardo Montalban and Nosotros, a 501c(3) non-profit organization founded in 1970, invite you to the 2006 Nosotros American Latino Film Festival.

This year the Nosotros American Latino Film Festival (NALFF) kicks off a week of festivities that includes the Latino Entertainment Industry Summit, and culminates with the 36th Annual Nosotros Golden Eagle Awards. The festivities will be held at the historic Ricardo Montalban Theatre in Hollywood, California. August 23rd-27th, 2006.

What is the Nosotros American Latino Film Festival? For the last 36 years Nosotros has been committed to ensuring equitable representation for Latinos in the entertainment industry. This film festival allows us to provide a platform and give voice to these otherwise underrepresented filmmakers. In keeping with the vision of Nosotros founder, Ricardo Montalban, "to promote the image and employment of Latinos in the entertainment industry," our festival strives to make this mission a reality.

With various programs throughout the event, the competitive festival showcases many feature films, documentaries, short films and music videos. NALFF showcases the work of American Latino filmmakers and offers entertainment industry workshops, panels discussions, a high school filmmakers showcase, educational programs, and networking receptions with live entertainment. Each evening hosts a gala with celebrity appearances that bring the entertainment community together. The bi-lingual event is open to the general public and entertainment industry at large with the majority of the programs presented in English. The film festival will serves as a fundraiser to supplement the various the educational programs Nosotros offers throughout the year.

What is an American Latino Filmmaker? From Chicanos in East Los Angeles, to Boricua's in New York and Cubans in Miami, to Central and South Americans throughout the country, American Latino filmmakers hail from various backgrounds, but share one commonality they are Latinos living in the United States. Their films reflect the American experience from their own unique perspective. These individuals stand to make a great impact and contribution to American filmmaking.

We believe that by offering resources to filmmakers and presenting educational programs, we ensure a Latino presence in the future of American Filmmaking. The English-speaking Latino is one of the hottest burgeoning markets. With more programming geared toward this demographic than ever before, the American Latino has fast become an intensely contested target audience.

Companeros,

My visit to the farm on Tuesday afternoon was bittersweet. After penetrating police barriers with my colegas (Payan y Maria) and two 3-chip video cameras -- we made our way around the perimeter to document what we saw...

we saw signs of vibrant and living gardens trampled...

the reckless paths of destruction left by bulldozers tearing into tender soil...

a hat hanging in the wind, waiting for it's owner to return...

sunflowers standing bravely amidst broken stalks of corn...

luchugas, ripe and ready for harvest...

trees, heavy with fruit...

blood red roses and cactuses in full bloom...

we saw birds, nervous, swooping down on twisted fence posts, searching for their nests...

and most touchingly of all...WE SAW PEOPLE...gente of all races and ages...singing and marching...

...brown hands, reaching in...stretching through the bottom of fences to pull out tender plant stalks...con raices y todo...hoping to replant the farm in safer conditions...

The Farm lives on! It will not die. It lives on in all those seeds and cuttings the gente pulled through the wire barriers...and most importantly, it lives on in the hearts and minds of all the GENTE who hold the line and defend this sacred oasis of green just South of Downtown.

C'mon out and join the Farmers, as they camp out, 'round the clock and at their nightly *candlelight vigils @ 7pm on the corner of 41st and Long Beach Blvd. *

Remember to keep calling and emailing your city officials - mayor@lacity.org - and Jan Perry - 213.473.7009 / 310.477.8081 to tell them you want the Farm to be saved.
