MORE
THAN FOUR MILLION VIEWERS TUNE INTO NCLR ALMA AWARDS
Washington, DC & According to Nielsen figures to be released
later this week, more than four million viewers throughout
the country watched the NCLR ALMA Awards show which was broadcast
last Monday, June 5, on ABC. That number represents a doubling
of the viewership from when the show last aired in 2002.
We are very pleased that, despite a four-year
hiatus, the ALMA Awards not only retained its original audience,
it also gained millions of new viewers. The unprecedented
level of attention the show received this year, thanks in
large part to Eva Longoria and ABC, also indicates that there
is a hunger to see more Latinos on television and to showcase
how the Latino presence strengthens this nation, stated Janet
Murguia, NCLR President and CEO.
ABC is thrilled that the ALMA Awards increased
its viewership by 100 percent in both total viewers and adults
18-49, said Andrea Wong, ABC Executive Vice President for
Alternative Programming, Specials and Late Night. This strong
performance reflects the ALMA Awards best performance in seven
years. Clearly, the television audience wants to see more
of our country's racial and ethnic diversity through quality
programming such as this.

Congratulation to Shawna Baca

Out of over two hundred applications,
NALIP member Shawna Baca's television
sitcom concept, Mix-Matched was selected
by the Producer's Guild Diversity Workshop. Mix-Matched
is about how world's collide when two women from totally
different cultures, a washed-out Paris Hilton type and
a fresh out of college light skinned Latina who often
gets mistaken for a white chick, reluctantly end up
as roommates.
I'm only a couple of weeks into the
program and I have learned a lot. Last week, I pitched
my show concept to Bill Lawrence (Creator of Scrubs
and Sin City). There are only five of us in my category,
so it has allowed us to have a lot of one-on-one time
with our mentors. The goal of the program is to help
take you to the next level. It's been a wonderful experience
so far, that has given me the opportunity to meet and
collaborate with successful producers and writers.
The Producers Guild of America
THE POWER OF DIVERSITY workshops were designed
to foster the development of diverse voices in Television
Comedy, One Hour Dramatic Series and Motion Pictures.
Participants are encouraged to explore, create and recreate
visions and stories that reflect our diverse culture.
This year's program provides additional support by working
with seasoned executives and providing informational
seminars to assist in the fields of: pitching, development,
marketing, packaging and engaging with network executives.
The cornerstone of this year's workshop will be a greater
emphasis on one-on-one mentoring with a member of the
Producers Guild. PGA has put together a remarkable group
of producers participating as mentors, including Marshall
Herskovitz, Bill Lawrence, Damon Lindelof Darren Star,
Debra Martin Chase, Tim Gibbons, Fern Field, Tracey
Edmonds and Ali LiRoi.
We wish our NALIPsters good
luck!
