The Quinceanera, or Quince
Anos, is a young Latin American woman's celebration of her
fifteenth birthday, which is celebrated in a unique and
different way from her other birthdays. The closest equivalents
to the Quinceanera in the English-speaking world are the
Sweet Sixteen or a debutante ball at the age of eighteen.
The celebration marks the transition from the childhood
to womanhood of a Quinceanera. `Quinceanera' is a look at
what happens when teenage sexuality, age-old rituals, and
real-estate prices collide. It is a powerful comedy-drama,
fueled by the racial, class, and sexual tensions of a Latino
neighborhood in transition. Magdalena (Emily Rios) is the
daughter of a Mexican-American family who runs a storefront
church in Echo Park, Los Angeles. With her fifteenth-birthday
approaching, all she can think about is her boyfriend, her
Quinceanera dress, and the Hummer limo she hopes will carry
her on her special day. But a few months before the celebration,
Magdalena falls pregnant.

Day Productions Wins Emmy
(Melissa Murphy, Mark Day and Matt McGinnis)
NALIP member Mark Day
of Day Productions has won an Emmy from the Pacific
Southwest chapter of the National Academy of Television
Arts and Sciences (NATAS-PSW) for a half hour crime
special on human trafficking.
Day accepted the award June 3rd at
the annual NATAS dinner held at the Omni Hotel in San
Diego. The show, Sex Trafficking: Looking for
the Indicators, was originally produced to help
law enforcement officers and non-governmental agencies
understand human trafficking and what to look for when
the crime takes place. It was cablecast last December
by KOCT-TV in Oceanside, CA.
The program consists of three re-enacted
scenes: a traffic stop, a domestic violence incident,
and a raid on a brothel. Day recruited local actors,
both amateur and professionals, for the show. It was
done in collaboration with the Bilateral Safety Corridor
Coalition (B.S.C.C.) and the San Diego County Sheriff's
Dept., and funded by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Day is currently working on a documentary
with Paul Espinosa on a Chicano music group based in
San Diego.

Cuban-American
filmmaker risks punishment
by Vanessa Arrington, Associated Press Writer
Cuban-American filmmaker Luis Moro expressed his disdain for
the long-standing U.S. trade and travel restrictions against
Cuba in a very public way: he made a movie there. Moro's Love
and Suicide screened recently in New Jersey after having been
shown last year in Los Angeles, Miami Beach and the Bahamas.
The film, linked as it is to Moro's personal crusade against
the U.S. embargo, led U.S. officials to investigate Moro for
possible violation of U.S. laws that make it almost impossible
for most Americans to legally visit communist Cuba. Vanessa
Arrington reports.
Democrats
are using the opportunity offered by World Cup programming to
kick off an advertising and marketing battle for the Hispanic
vote this November.
WASHINGTON (AdAge.com) The New Democratic Network tomorrow launches
a $2 million TV and radio campaign, seeing the soccer tournament
as a way to launch a branding effort aimed at newer Hispanic
immigrants and recapture votes that went to President Bush in
2004. And the message will be reinforced through distribution
of soccer jerseys and balls emblazoned with the campaign's tagline.
