LOS LONELY BOYS COTTON FIELDS AND CROSSROADS FILM THEATRICAL RELEASE THREE BROTHERS, ONE DREAM

Los Lonely Boys Cottonfields and Crossroads, a film by NALIP Advisor, Hector Galan
will have its U.S. theatrical premiere at CineMark Theaters, opening in seven Texas cities (San Angelo, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, Harlingen, Weslaco, McAllen, Mission)

More cities and dates will be added in June, as the film will open in theaters across Texas and the U.S. The film is being released by Lone Wolf Bridge Releasing.

The film traces the early days as the young family band cuts its teeth learning from their father and playing in country bars and Mexican cantinas in and around San Angelo, Texas. The film travels with them to Nashville where they endure turmoil and heartbreak. These life
experiences captured so eloquently by Galan's camera reveal a compelling portrait of a young band of brothers who against all odds break out of poverty and find the American rock n roll dream.

CBS DIVERSITY INSTITUTE

REMINDER: APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JUNE 1ST

Applications are now being accepted for the fourth session of the CBS Diversity Institute's Writers Mentoring Program.

The Writers Mentoring Program helps aspiring writers to break in and move up in the Business. Each participant is matched with two mentors - one is a senior level writer/producer on a CBS primetime series, the other is a CBS or Paramount TV creative executive. Participants meet regularly with their mentors for advice and support on improving their writing skills as well as career advice and guidance

Six of the seven 2004 Program participants were hired on network television series as staff writers or writer assistants; four of those six had their first episodes produced last year. Two of them have moved up to Story Editor level this year. Three of our 2005 mentees were hired as staff writers on network series.

The primary focus of CBS' Diversity Institute Writers Mentoring Program is to provide access and networking opportunities for talented and motivated diverse writers - especially writers of color. The program is based in Los Angeles. It begins in November 2006 and runs through the end of May 2007.

The Writers Mentoring Program is not employment and there is no monetary compensation. It is, instead, a structured program of career development, support, and personal access to executives and decision-making processes; with the goal of preparing aspiring writers for later employment opportunities in television.

Congratulation to NALIP Fellow, Carolina Paiz!

I have a job. As a writer.

It feels so good to finally say that. It feels like the end of a long journey, but in reality, it's just the beginning. I'm sure that many obstacles lie ahead but I've conquered the first one: getting my foot in the door. So how did I manage to squeeze my big tamale foot into that small little opening? And more importantly, how did I stumble into a job as a staff writer on Grey's Anatomy

I'd say the answer comes in two parts. Hard work and helping hands.

The hard work you guys all know about... It's the part where you sacrifice more than you ever thought you would for a career you're not even sure you'll get. It's the part where you stop planning your wedding (like I did), to make sure you hand in a free spec that may or may not get read by the right people. It's the part where you spend years polishing that script that you've been told will never see the light of day.

The helping hands part you're also familiar with. If you're reading this newsletter, then you already know about organizations like NALIP, LALIFF, the WGA and the PGA who are bending over backwards to help us Latinos break into Hollywood. What you may not know is how to translate this help into a job opportunity. I don't have an answer to that everyone's experience is different. But this was mine:

I applied to the PGA's Diversity program last year with a TV drama called "Boarders" The idea was nothing more than a pitch but it was chosen as one of the three dramas that we would workshop with our mentor, the creator and executive producer of Grey's Anatomy: the amazing Shonda Rhimes.

Shonda helped us polish our pitch, helped us flesh out a scene and gave us really insightful notes. When the program was over, I made sure to thank her profusely for all of the advice that she'd so generously given. I even bought her a present for Harper, her two-year-old daughter. A woman like Shonda doesn't really have time to volunteer as a mentor but she did so anyway. And I was eternally grateful to her and to the PGA for helping me develop Boarders into something I was proud of.

A few weeks after the program was over, I finished my first draft of the "Boarders" pilot. I sent it to Shonda, hoping she might take a look at it, but feeling like there was no way she'd have the time. Months went by... And then I got a call. Shonda had sent my script to her producers and to Touchstone. They'd read it and they wanted to meet with me.

My stomach lurched. I couldn't believe it! I was suddenly relieved that I'd been preparing for this moment all along... Ever since finishing the PGA program, I'd taken the job of writing the pilot very seriously, I'd enrolled in UCLA extension courses, and I was writing a TV spec. They say that luck is when preparation meets opportunity. I lucked out... and got a job as the baby writer on staff at "Grey's Anatomy!

I spoke to Shonda about the experience soon afterwards. She explained that she hadn't planned on hiring anyone from the PGA&'s Diversity Program, but that she'd been impressed by the amount of hard work I'd put in and the positive attitude I kept throughout.

The PGA's Diversity Program helped me not only in developing my show, but also in giving me priceless connections to Hollywood players. In my case, the relationship I developed with Shonda proved to be instrumental in breaking into the business.

So take the hand that stretches out to help you. But make sure you don't waste that precious opportunity.... and remember always to be thankful... shake that helping hand passionately, and then, if you can, turn around, and offer your hand to someone else.
