Monica S. Espinosa

NALIP WELCOMES 2 NEW TEAM MEMBERS

Dina Fuentes

Please join me in welcoming to the NALIP team two new staffers: Monica S. Espinosa, new NALIP Membership Coordinator, and Dina Fuentes, Webmaster and LITI Co-Editor.

Monica is a native New Mexican, aspiring actress, director and producer, and has made more than 15 short films. She joins us after working for 7 years at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is passionate about advocating by and with Latinos. She co-produced a short film with the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska and Haskell Indian Nations University about tribal sovereignty and environmental issues to better educate government staff. She was also the Chair and Member of the 2002-2005, Kansas City Filmmaker’s Jubilee (www.kcjubilee.org) Crosscut: Women Making Movies Symposium and on the Board of the Kansas City Independent Filmmakers’ Coalition (www.ifckc.com). Please give her a call with all of your membership questions: 310.395.8880 or membership@nalip.org.

Dina earned her BA at Evangel University in Springfield, MO with a focus in communications and computers. Like Monica, she is a recent transplant to California and also a filmmaker. Her documentary EXOTIC ANIMAL DISCOVERY earned first place at the Missouri Broadcast Educators Association Conference in 2005. Between her new busy joint jobs updating NALIP's website with all of our notices, programs and calendar items, and co-editing Latinos in the Industry with Alex Mendoza, she plans to attend graduate school in the fall. Check out www.nalip.org -- Notices or ideas? Contact Dina via webmaster@nalip.org.

I know that you join us in thanking Jose Murillo and Samantha Smith for their great work with us. We know that they will stay in touch and send us news from the front on their producing projects in the future!

Resolution Expresses Support for Families of the U.S. Border City

Washington, D.C. – On May 2, 2006, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously approved House Concurrent Resolution 90 (H. Con. Res. 90), legislation authored by Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis to address the disappearances and murders of more than 400 women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

“We are one step closer to bringing justice to the families of Ciudad Juarez,” said Congresswoman Solis. “Passage of this important measure signifies strong U.S. Congressional support for the families of Juarez and the need to address this tragic human rights situation. Binational cooperation between the U.S. and Mexico will help bring an end to the murders of women in Ciudad Juarez and closure to their families,” Solis said.

H. Con. Res. 90 condemns the ongoing abduction and murders of young women in Ciudad Juarez and the city of Chihuahua in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico; expresses condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims; and proposes a set of actions to investigate and prevent the crimes. For the past three years, Congresswoman Solis has been working to bring more attention to the brutal murders of women and girls in Ciudad Juarez, a city located just minutes from the U.S. border.

The next step in the legislative process is for the Senate to pass an identical resolution, Senate Concurrent Resolution 16, was introduced by Senator Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico and has 18 cosponsors, including four Republicans.

GOAL! The Dream Begins

Theatrical Release May 12, 2006

When Santiago Muñez crossed the Mexican border into America at the age of 10, he had two things in his possession: his soccer ball and a tattered picture of the World Cup. Working menial jobs, while growing up in Los Angeles, Santiago's (Kuno Becker) passion was playing soccer. Convincing his father that he could be an international football star was another story: "There are two types of people in this world," declares the elder Muñez, "People in big houses, and people like us who cut their lawns and wash their cars."

But when Brit Glen Foy (Stephen Dillane), an amiable former football player and sometime scout spots Santiago at a local match, he recognizes a deft, fast and brave footballer, the kind of talent that the English Premier League Club, Newcastle United, is hungry for.

Now thrust into a foreign land where football is a religion and Newcastle's St. James' Park its cathedral, this young Latin American must prove that he's got the grit and the game to win a contract with one of the most beloved football clubs in the world. Muddy fields, cold winds and crunching blows from teammates not to mention personal woes, injuries, and the temptations of life as an international footballer are just a few of the obstacles Santiago must overcome to reach his ultimate "Goal".

Director's Message:

Monday, Los Angeles experienced two major marches, with more than 500,000 people. Nationwide rallies and a boycott rolled across the nation. Here at the CSRC we have long known that immigration is a hot-button issue, and we have the hate mail to prove it: we have received angry letters each time we have released a report that examines the role of immigrants in the economy and the body politic. For some, immigration is an issue that they would like to see just go away. In this view immigration is no longer the cornerstone of the American Dream (remember "We are a nation of immigrants"; remember "Give me your tired, your poor"?); it has become a nightmare about being overrun by Mexicans. But you can't have it both ways: wanting all the benefits of Mexican labor, but not wanting to grant basic human rights to the Mexicans who provide that labor. Although immigration is a complicated issue—and it is more deeply hardwired into our economy and social structure than anyone wants to admit right now—it is above all a human issue. There is no simple answer, but we would do well to remember our nation's values and promise with respect to immigration and human rights. We are, indeed, a nation of immigrants and as Abraham Lincoln once said, paraphrasing Jesus in the New Testament, "a house divided against itself cannot stand."
Chon Noriega, NALIP Founding Board Member

“The Sleeping Giant has woken up... and all of this is before he takes his morning coffee!”

If we are to believe the numbers provided by the different police departments on the number of people in each city where there were demonstrations, there were more than 1.5 Million people out there. And while politicians and activists are looking at these numbers very closely, their significance is somewhat diminished by the fact that, even in the most optimistic estimate of the activists, more than 50% of those people CAN’T vote.
What DOES have significance is that somewhere between 27% - 30% of the Public High School Population in the nation ditched school this past Monday (40%+ in cities where the Latino Population is a majority). These are the sons and daughters of immigrants (legal or undocumented) that are highly informed, motivated, now are politicized, and… have incredible networking skills.
These are kids, with high family values that know that, if not Mami y Papi being adversely affected, then Abuelita o Abuelito, and if not them, a Nina or Nino or a Tio or Tia, and we know that Latinos call Tio or Tia ANY close friend of the family. These are kids that know that THEIR own future is at play.
Most all of these teenagers are already Citizens, and will reach voting age in the next two years… that it is, in time for the next presidential elections period. Do we have vital leaders and great things for them to vote for?

IPOP: Rosie Perez's Doc

The Armani Casa store (Armani's furniture line) in SoHo provided the venue for actress/director Rosie Perez's doc "Yo soy Boricua, pa'que tu lo sepas!" on New York's annual Peurto Rican Day parade. Perez is pictured here with actor/rapper Mos Def ("The Woodsman") and the film's producers, doc filmmakers Rory Kennedy and Liz Garbus as well as IFC exec Evan Shapiro (left). The party was VERY well-attended and many of the tables in the store were obstacles for the crowd working their way through the rooms. The film is an insightful look at Puerto Rican history and pride. Read the Full Story http://www.indiewire.com/ipop/2006/05/rosie_perezs_do.html
