After Tha Fact Films and Deeply Rooted Films… Brings “Six Thugs” to the Screen
A Cautionary Tale Explores Darker Aspects of Life for a New Generation of Alienated Urban Latino Youth
Los Angeles, CA —In a nod to the emerging importance of U.S. Latino audiences and a decreasing distinction between urban and Latino entertainment, After Tha Fact Films in association with Deeply Rooted Films and producer Lorna Paul have launched production with Six Thugs, a feature film written by first-time scribes Magdaleno “Guic One” Robles, Jr. and Abel Salas.
The picture is helmed by actor/writer/producer Robles AKA “Juice,” who makes his directorial debut on the film, a feature project based on a story by writer/director Alfredo Ramos (ROAD DOGZ, FOOD- STAMPS). Robles, an artist who has collaborated musically with rap superstars Cypress Hill and underground reggeaton star Bimbo, offers Six Thugs as evidence of an evolution in U.S. based Latino cinema and the fact that “urban” culture has, borrowed liberally—and without acknowledgement—from Los Angeles Chicano gang culture. The story, which follows a young man released from prison as he returns to the same group that put him there, takes place on a single day in real time. While the physical environment that surrounds six childhood friends has changed, the rage and oblivion that mark their downward spiral from lost inner-city kids to contemporary urban casualties continue unabated. Actors Noel Gugliemi (MALIBU’S MOST WANTED, TRAINING DAY, BRUCE ALMIGHTY), NALIP member & LPA Actor Demetrius Navarro ( “E.R”., FRIDAY, PURPLE HEART), Rolando Molina (RUMOUR HAS IT, CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL, “THE HANDLER”), Robles (PLATINUM ILLUSIONS, ALI G INDAHOUSE,), Ismael Vidrio (COLLATERAL, 187 SHADOW LANE) and Robert Zepeda (GRIDIRON GANG, ALI G INDAHOUSE, “CSI: Miami”) and Denny Kirkwood (GROOVE, NEVER BEEN KISSED, “THE DEAD ZONE”) star alongside debut actors Andrea Jimenez (YARDSALE) Gilbert Saldivar, an stage dancer (Ricky Martin, Frankie J, and Jennifer Lopez) in an ensemble cast. “It isn’t about usurping the term or who has the right to call themselves urban,” says helmer Robles. “Today, South Central at least 75% Latino and Compton is 50% percent. The gangster style, the baggy clothes, the bandana du-rags and tricked-out cars were taken from the old-school cholos and popularized in gangster rap.”
Production on Six Thugs began the second week in March on location in the San Gabriel Valley . According to Robles, the cast and crew assembled for the production bring a raw authenticity to controversial subjects such as rape and gang initiation. “We’re offering a new genre we call ‘hard core urban Latino cinema’ with established Latino A-list talent here,” says Robles. “I know it will raise concerns, but I want people to understand that there’s an underlying message of redemption and salvation,” Robles continues. “I’m pleased to be working with an incredible team.”
“We’re not glorifying what the young men depicted in the film have become. We’ve seen the loss and devastation first hand,” says co-writer Salas, who teaches writing to youth in LA correctional facilities. Robles is represented by Barnes Morris Klein Mark Yorn Barnes & Levine, a Santa Monica, California-based entertainment and transactional media law firm. A companion soundtrack will feature original music from the leading artists in Latino rap, hip-hop and reggaeton. Abel Salas is a journalist and poet who has published work in the Los Angeles Times Magazine, The New York Times and The Austin Chronicle.
“REDEMPTION” SELECTED BY INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE TO RECEIVE FUNDING

NALIP member YAZMIN ORTIZ’S project “Redemption” has been selected by the global Conferencia de Autoridades Audiovisuales de Iberoamérica to receive funding out of 78 projects from Latin America . The film is Ortiz’s feature-directing debut. The drama/action adventure film was originally developed at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival’s Writers Competition where Ortiz was a finalist with her short screenplay “El Baile” whose short film was also featured at LALIFF’Ss Emerging Talent Showcase. “Redemption” was also featured at this year’s NALIP’S Latino Media Market. Ortiz’s newly formed Blind Ambition Films, LLC and Adart Producciones, Argentina , will produce the film through their respective companies. Ortíz commented: “Redemption” is a harsh story about second chances.” Presently working in three continents, Blind Ambition Films, LLC plans to produce low budget-high quality universal-theme Latino stories for the U.S. and Latin American Latino market. “We are collaborating with several NALIP writers from across the nation and Puerto Rico , as well as other local Latino writers.
NALIP has been very instrumental in providing me and other filmmakers with contacts for local collaborations.” Ortíz’s is a graduate of UCLA, LACC and California State University , Northridge. Her graduate studies focused in digital cinematography, technologies’ convergence and high definition exhibition. She has directed, produced, written and shot 15 short films and a docudrama. After Redemption, Ms. Ortíz is also scheduled to direct her Latino-theme teenage comedy “The Kidnapper,” also from her own screenplay. Breakdown: AMY: (late 20s early 30s) Caucasian or Asian-American, Latino. A frazzled somewhat new mother, anxious, pensive, seeking solace, running away from something unfortunate
SAMUEL: (late 30s-early 40s) Caucasian. An everyman with a very Midwestern reserve, not in a relationship and haunted by his father, solitary, a man with a vivid imagination, but that's a secret to most of the world
ELEANOR: (early to mid 50s) Caucasian. Samuel's mother. Sensitive, world-weary, slightly fidgety, seeking connection, has learned how to be supportive, presents a stoic Midwestern face to the world that covers a deep inner turmoil.
JAMES: (40s? 50s) Caucasian or Asian-American, Latino. Everybody's slightly nerdy, slightly wacky Fifth grade biology teacher, quirky, lonely, obsessive, friendly, self-important.
DELIA: (late 30s) African-American. Hard-ass, tell-it-like-it-is, been around the block a few times, a bawdy sense of humor; underneath the bravura has a strong sense of common decency and humanity.
DON/ (TOM'S VOICE): (early to mid 30s) African American. Super smooth talker, has some surface success as a musician (is in love with the idea that he is one), and a strong sense of himself as God's gift to women, therefore, a strong sense of chivalry as well as being quick to take umbrage about perceived wrongs done him.
DAVID: (early to mid 20s) Caucasian. Very beautiful and frail. Hypersensitive and fragile, life has beat on him; he is a tortured soul on the verge of cracking
EMMA/ ( MAGDALENA 'S VOICE) (early to mid 30s) Caucasian. Sister of David. Also very beautiful, has a maternal quality, she holds her hypersensitivity to the ills of the world in check with a strong practicality, and has chosen an ordinary Midwestern life. NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO SING FOLK MUSIC.
PLEASE NOTE: Any musical instruments actors play would be a bonus, not required, but useful. Instruments such as guitar, accordion, harmonica, saxophone, fiddle, etc. ALSO, if the actor sings--it is not required (except for Emma/Magdalena--just a bonus.
