¡Qué Barbaro!
A new film that premiered on HBO last week, Walkout, chronicles the 1968 “walkouts” organized by thousands of students in East Los Angeles to protest the treatment of Latino students in the city’s public school system. What these students wanted was to be treated with respect, dignity, and fairness, and as individuals with unlimited potential rather than as a faceless “problem.”
We were reminded of the heroic and courageous efforts of these students by the actions in the last few weeks of a new generation of Latinos who also wish to be treated with respect, dignity, fairness, and recognition that immigrants are human beings contributing mightily to this nation, not chess pieces in some perverse game being played in Congress to see “quién es más macho” when it comes to cracking down on immigrants.
It started small, earlier this month, with a rally in Philadelphia which drew nearly 5,000. Washington, DC followed, with 30,000-50,000 marching to the U.S. Capitol. By the end of the week, Chicago experienced the largest march in its history as more than 100,000 people gathered in the city’s loop. This unleashed a host of other events in Atlanta, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Denver, and other cities, culminating in the largest protest march in Los Angeles’ history this past Saturday where nearly a million people, many dressed in white, marched through the city.
This is the march that has finally gotten the mainstream media’s attention. It’s about time. The barbaridad is that while the smallest of this month’s pro-immigrant rallies has dwarfed even the largest gathering of Minutemen and their ilk, the Minutemen have received a tsunami of media attention that far exceeds coverage of these marches. However, after more than a year, the “tip of the iceberg” spin on the Minutemen is ringing far more hollow these days.
We hope that the hype surrounding the Minutemen reflects the English-language media’s hunger for new “man bites dog” stories rather than a much more troubling but unfortunately plausible explanation – that the Minutemen finally gave the mainstream media’s Latino-challenged newsrooms the excuse they needed to discuss their own anxiety over the growing immigrant population.
To those who might be “anxious,” we would note not just the size and the energy of these marches, but the tone and atmosphere. These marches have been resolutely peaceful. The flags displayed were overwhelmingly American, and the signs were filled with slogans like “We are America” and “I want the American Dream.” Despite the considerable anger that anti-immigrant legislation has stirred up, marchers are asking for dialogue, not immigrant bashing; a constructive debate without rancor or scapegoating; and a sensible, reasonable, and humane answer to this vexing issue. Contrast that with the Minutemen. Heck, contrast that with the English-language media’s immigration coverage, especially on television and radio.

PUERTO RICAN FILMMAKERS WIN COPPER WING AWARD
The Puerto Rican filmmaking team of Poli Marichal and Ricardo Méndez Matta, NALIP Conference Presenter, were awarded the Copper Wing Award for Best Director in the World Cinema Competition at the 2006 Phoenix Film Festival, for their film Thieves and Liars (Ladrones y Mentirosos). Festival President Chris LaMont presented the award to the filmmakers at the closing ceremony, held Sunday, March 26th, at the Arizona Republic Party Pavillion
in Scottsdale , Arizona .
The Spanish language film, starring Steven Bauer (“Scarface”, “Traffic”), Elpidia Carrillo (Mi Familia, Predator”), Daniel Lugo, Lymari Nadal, Magda Rivera and a large ensemble cast, including reggaetón singing stars Vico C and TNT, depicts the life of three Puerto Rican families trying to cope with the wave of drugs and corruption afflicting the island ever since it became the main port of entry for cocaine into the US east coast.
When accepting the award, Ricardo and Poli highlighted the significance of screening the film in Arizona , a state similarly used by smugglers as a trans shipment point for illegal drugs entering the U.S. The film also had a special encore screening on Monday, March 27, sponsored by the Univision network. Next up on the movie¹s calendar will be screenings at the Chicago Latino Film Festival in April, followed by the prestigious Seattle Film Festival in May.
“Through these compelling parallel stories, Matta and Marichal call attention to the truly inescapable corruption in Puerto Rico , which is very much a product of American influence.” Elena Bonomo, Cleveland International Film Festival.

JOSE CAN SPEAK returns on MAY 11th, 2006
Jose Can Speak is getting another chance to be heard. After a successful workshop production at the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe in spring of 2006 which was co-produced with Chica Luna Productions, NALIP member Linda Nieves-Powell who conceived the idea of having Latinas perform as their male counterparts, decided that although the show was well received, it was too long and there was a missing thread that needed to connect these stories together to create one journey. Linda who is directing the AHA sponsored workshop production of the show has also written three additional monologues and is also performing a new monologue dedicated to the Latino soldier and the brave men of the 65th Infantry.
"The Nuyorican Poet's Cafe workshop production was an out of the box experiment. I wanted to see if this idea worked and it did. However, I am still working on developing the piece. Everyone raves about the concept where women perform as men, however what is more important to me is that these stories connect to one another in order to tell the bigger picture of the male Latino experience in this country." Linda said.
The May 11th performance of Jose Can Speak is sponsored by The Association of Hispanic Arts and is part of this year's Latinas in Literature series. To view the flyer for more info on this event and others click here: http://www.latinoflavored.com/

Latinos Finally Get Counted: New Radio and TV Ratings System Emerges
Founded in 1949, Arbitron is considered the audience measurement pioneer. It began measuring television and radio and now concentrates only on radio ratings all over the U.S. , Puerto Rico and Mexico . Last month, Arbitron Executives flew from New York to Los Angeles to present to the NHMC and National Latino Media Council Board the results of a Houston Portable People
Meter (PPM) field test. The new technology can be used in radio and television. The consensus after the presentation was that this new technology was far superior than anything else that is currently available in the market and that it offers transparency in the methodology – an invaluable tool for media advocates who have been asking for this for years.
The advantages of the PPMs include more stable, reliable and timely data, more frequent reporting, measured compliance and the participation of technically trained households. In addition, we are pleased to see that Arbitron made the distinction between Latino Spanish-speaking and LatinoEnglish-speaking participants- a key characteristic that makes our community
unique. We will keep you informed on Arbitron¹s progress in introducing this new technology to the market in radio and television. For more information, visit: www.nhmc.org
