Dear Friends of NALIP
Just a reminder if you saw or are planning on seeing the film, "Walkout" on HBO this month, please send a email to the network and thank them for producing this type of programming. I sent my email today and it was really easy.
Go to www.hbo.com then go to contact us (its at the bottom of the page), then go to HBO Films at the bottom you will see "submit an email" and the question, Haven't found an answer to your question? “Contact Us” click here and type your email on the next page.
Remember unless you are a Nielsen household, HBO will not know you've watched the film. And we do need to let them know that this type of programming is appreciated.

TELEMUNDO EXTENDS DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR SECOND INSTALLMENT OF "TALLER
TELEMUNDO: ESCRITORES"
Interested applicants now have until April 23, 2006 to submit their
application through www.tallertelemundo.com .
Miami, Fla. - March 20, 2006 - Telemundo announced today it has extended
the deadline to apply for the second installment of its successful
writer's workshop "Taller Telemundo: Escritores." Originally conceived
by Telemundo President, Don Browne, this year's "Taller Telemundo:
Escritores," will offer a curriculum that specifically prepares and
retains Hispanic writers interested in writing fiction (drama and
comedy) for television and Telemundo's growing digital media platform.
The application process has been extended until April 23, 2006.
This year, the program will select up to 20 prospective students from
qualified applicants to participate in a highly competitive 6-month
instructional program in Miami, Florida. Later this year, another group
of 20 may be selected to participate in Los Angeles, CA. There will not
be a separate application process for the Los Angeles program.
For more information on "Taller Telemundo: Escritores 2006," please
visit www.tallertelemundo.com.
In line with its mission to create high-quality original content to
reflect, inspire, and empower Hispanics in the U.S., Telemundo saw the
need for creating a program that could recruit, train, and retain the
next generation of Hispanic writers. Under Don Browne's leadership, the
first run of "Taller Telemundo: Escritores" produced 14 graduates which
came from a pool of nearly 4,400 applicants who represented over 35
states, 26 countries and a wide variety of backgrounds including college
students, journalists, housewives, waiters, truck drivers, and clergy.
Eight of these students are now employed at Telemundo with another 3
students working on a freelance basis. Graduating student Erick
Hernandez received a special honor this past December: a Book Award
given jointly by Telemundo and Atria Books-an imprint of Simon &
Schuster launched its Latino-Hispanic line in February 2006-to write a
book based on one of Telemundo's hit telenovelas. Hernandez, a Cuban
immigrant with a compelling personal story, emerged as one of the most
dedicated and hard-working students in the program.
"Taller Telemundo: Escritores 2006" is open to Telemundo, NBC Universal
and GE employees who are not currently employed as writers at Telemundo,
students of all educational institutions of higher learning, and the
general public who possess the requisite writing skills and a passion
for Spanish-language television. The program will provide selected
students with tuition, books, and other classroom materials and program
benefits, at no cost.
Telemundo, a U.S. Spanish-language television network, is the essential
entertainment, news, and sports source for Hispanics. Broadcasting
unique national and local programming for the fastest-growing segment of
the U.S. population, Telemundo reaches 93% of U.S. Hispanic households
in 142 markets through its 16 owned-and-operated stations, 36 broadcast
affiliates, and nearly 684 cable affiliates. Telemundo is wholly owned
by NBC Universal, one of the world's leading media and entertainment
companies.
Miami Dade College is nationally recognized as the largest and one of
the best colleges in the country. The College enrolls more than 163,000
students every year, and boasts the largest enrollment of Hispanic
students among colleges and universities in the nation. The student
body is representative of more than 170 nationalities. With more than
200 academic program offerings, the College awards more associate
degrees than any other college in the United States. Currently, MDC
offers a four-year degree in education to also help address the critical
need for teachers in our schools.

Apply for the 2006 Latino Writers Lab
The Latino Writers Lab™ is a unique program for NALIP members who aspire to work as professional screenwriters, or who desire to develop a strong, viable screenplay for production or sale. It includes skills development by professional instructors, direct mentoring of your work-in-progress by writer/mentors, and professional lunches on legal, guild and industry information. Only 12 – 15 writers will be selected to participate in this 10-day intensive workshop. The first five-day seminar will be conducted in New York City May 3 - 7, 2006, beginning Wednesday evening with an orientation and screening.
All projects accepted for and mentored during the Spring seminar must be developed and rewritten during the Summer of 2006. The second five-day Fall seminar will be held in Santa Monica, CA, September 27th. - October 1st. Completed scripts (first drafts based on workshop treatments or polished drafts following development input) must be submitted for review by Sept. 6.
Morning sessions in Spring will cover writing principles that make your script more exciting and moving, while simplifying the difficult job of transforming an idea into an unforgettable piece of cinema. Afternoon sessions include detailed discussion of your work-in-progress. Evenings include screenings of 4 successful feature films, which are then analyzed in detail to support your writing and development process. In the Fall, morning sessions afford each writer detailed work on dramatic scenes, and hone your skills for revising the basic building blocks of all film and television scripts. Afternoon meetings include specific discussion of your screenplay during in-depth mentoring sessions.
Commitment to both seminars and the writing work in between is a must – you’ll thank us! And you'll come away with solid screenplays to show for the effort. APPLICATIONS MUST BE POSTMARKED MARCH 23 – Notification by April 15 – Repeat LWL Writers Welcome!
Four hotel scholarships are available in each location: submit supplement application; low NALIP hotel rate available for all LWL out-of-town writers. Cost of each 4-day Workshop, if accepted, is $350. NALIP Members ONLY.
Every movie in release, every film at a festival, every telefilm or DVD at Blockbuster, began with a script. Every shooting script began as a first draft. Every first draft was a treatment or a concept. It seems like everyone has a screenplay but, the truth is, every producer and funder is looking for a good one. The more great screenplays that Latinos write, the more films will be made and the more writers will go on to careers writing and rewriting for film and television. This is the path to a louder Latino voice in media.
