Whether you've made a dozen movies or only dreamt of making one, whether you're "in the biz" or just have some spare time and a great idea, it's time to pick up a camera and make a movie. CASTING CALL: ‘La Ticla’
Blue Cactus Latin is currently seeking headshots and resumes for a feature film to be shot in Mexico and Guadalajara , April-June. Casting will be March 7, 8 and 9 in Los Angeles . Character breakdowns are below. This is a non-union project. Please send resumes, headshots and inquiries to bluecactusinc@hotmail.com
ROSA : (perfect Spanish, with a Mexican accent)
(21 to 24 years old) Brunette long hair, thin, nice, curvy body, a natural beauty from a little Mexican beach town on the Pacific Ocean . Fresh and nice personality, sweet, attractive, humble, innocent, but seductive eyes, very vulnerable, and sometimes seems like a wounded animal. She is the type of girl that is not a top model, but has a personality, smile and eyes that any man will go crazy for. (Type: Salma Hayek in “Desperado”).
EL TIGRE : (Very good Spanish)
(50s) He owns the town and everybody in it. He’s a very smart, shrew drug dealer. Not the stereotypical bad guy. Very strong personality, with a stabbing and cold glance, a man of not too many words, but a very respectful man. He can be warm if he wants, but a ruthless, cold human being if you tangle with him. He will protect with blood what is his. He has a hidden sad side that knows because of his rough looks and older age, he has Rosa only because she fears him. If she did not fear him, she would not stay with him, he knows that. He began as an illegal immigrant who came across the border to the US when he was just a kid. As he grew up, he learned the way of the streets, made connections along the border, and became a drug dealer, a major drug dealer now based in a town in Michoacan over which he rules like Don Corleone in THE GODFATHER. He lives a life of crime, but he religiously attends church. (Type: Edward James Olmos in “American Me”).
NICK: (Australian accent, surfing knowledge, surfing ability is a big plus)
(Mid 30s) A self-confident, know-it-all Australian with disheveled hair, a deep tan, and your typical surfer. He’s a waterman, an ex-professional surfer, adrenaline junkie, leaving on the edge all the time, cool and funny personality. Free spirit. He has traveled the world twice. He can die surfing because he loves it so much. (Type of Patrick Swayze in “Point Break”).
Please send resumes, headshots and inquiries to bluecactusinc@hotmail.com

Mis Queridos Compinches y Compinchas:
Today I want to contarles some chismes about me and a couple of friends, that will clearly demonstrate how pin... viejos we are.
Frank, Alex and Alexito, el bonito (that is me, for the uninitiated), ... my own version of the Three Musketeers (I know, I know, the 3 Musketeers were actually 4, I'm no so bruto, but since Frank is so big, I count him as two).
Frank Zuñiga gave me directing classes at Columbia College back in the mid 80's. He was my first hero in this crazy town. Can you imagine? Just getting dried from crossing the border, after few years in gringoland and trying to break into the industry, and here he was ... an established, working and legit (aunque bien feo) LATINO DIRECTOR! With a resume that included constant work for one of the major studios (Disney). Boy, I was deslumbrado, ... little I knew then...
He then introduced me to Alex Nogales. Hay, Chingao! Now here is a respectful, working for a major network (CBS), established, and even this one, bonito and well poised, LATINO TV PRODUCER! (Don't worry... I'm very secure in my homosexuality, just never practice it - besides he pisses me off since he is the only one I can't out-dress when I make my mind to dress up). Oh Boy, I thought, I had made it with these two as friends, ... little I knew then...
"So Pancho and Tocayo, where I start?", I asked then, with the confidence that all doors will be opening for me ... little I knew then...
"Well, manito, come with us..." they answered. "Where?" I asked. "Just, FOLLOW US" they told me... Stupid me, I agreed. (I should have know that was not a directional reference, it was actually a life commitment.)
The place: a TV Studio in CBS on Sunset. The Event: One of the first meetings of The Hispanic Academy of Media Arts & Sciences (HAMAS). Their Roles: Frank, President; Alex, Vice President. The Issue: (What else?) The under-representation and underemployment of Latinos In The Industry ... and so, it all started, then, the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) followed shortly after.
Me, I broke ranks in the first chance I had and went to slave for the gringos for more than 15 years. They, stayed the course and gave up, careers, family and wealth in order to fulfill their goal: To Improve the Quality and Quantity of the Images and Participation of Latinos in Media.
Time passed and then, after many tries, Frank persuaded me to come back to the womb and thrive within and serve my community. Of course, given the size of the Latino Wave, me, the pin... convenenciero, took the plunge. When I told Frank that outside of them two, I truly didn't have any connection to any Latino in The Industry, he gave me the first 150 e-mails of you (that just happened to be the attendees to the first NALIP Conference in San Francisco ). With those, I started the Latinos In The Industry eNewsletter, now seven years ago. (So if any of the current 4,500+ current subscribers hate me and my ramblings, blame him.)
There is something to be said about two people that have given it all, with their main purpose in life being ... to BECOME OBSOLETE. Think about it, once they fulfill their goal, we would not need them any more. Ironic, no? De Respetar, certainly.
Now, 20 years later, it is with the greatest joy that I get to celebrate with them two, the OUTSTANDING IMPROVEMENT of all of us in this God forsaken industry. We have never had as many of us in so good light in front or behind the cameras, or in the executive suites! Not only because of them, granted, but significantly due to their efforts and effectiveness. We all, and I mean ALL, even those old guard that were already established many years before and especially those novatos, owe a big, bien grandote, huge-mangos, gigante, GRACIAS to them.
Tomorrow, at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, we will party like there is no tomorrow, when actually, ... we have never had a better prospect of a bright one!
Salud!!!, mis dos hermanos, un besote fraternal (forget about what I say before about my homosexuality), that ... you ask me, "FOLLOW US"?... Diganme pa' donde, que pa' alla voy...
Alexito, el muy agradecidito.
