2006 LATINO WRITERS LAB ™
May 3 – 7, 2006 – New York , NY
September 27 – October 1, 2006 – Santa Monica , CA
The Latino Writers Lab™ is a unique program for NALIP members who aspire to work as professional screenwriters, or who desire to develop a strong, viable screenplay for production or sale. It includes skills development by professional instructors, direct mentoring of your work-in-progress by writer/mentors, and professional lunches on legal, guild and industry information. Only 12 – 15 writers will be selected to participate in this 10-day intensive workshop. The first five-day seminar will be conducted in New York City,
May 3 - 7, 2006, beginning Wednesday evening with an orientation and screening.
All projects accepted for and mentored during the Spring seminar must be developed and rewritten during the Summer of 2006. The second five-day Fall seminar will be held in Santa Monica , CA , September 27th. - October 1st. Completed scripts (first drafts based on workshop treatments or polished drafts following development input) must be submitted for review by Sept. 6.
Morning sessions in Spring will cover writing principles that make your script more exciting and moving, while simplifying the difficult job of transforming an idea into an unforgettable piece of cinema. Afternoon sessions include detailed discussion of your work-in-progress. Evenings include screenings of 4 successful feature films, which are then analyzed in detail to support your writing and development process. In the Fall, morning sessions afford each writer detailed work on dramatic scenes, and hone your skills for revising the basic building blocks of all film and television scripts. Afternoon meetings include specific discussion of your screenplay during in-depth mentoring sessions.
Morning instruction in both the Spring and Autumn seminars will be led by Ted Braun, Senior Lecturer in Screenwriting at USC’s School of Cinema-Television. Mentors include Miguel Tejada-Flores (RE-ANIMATOR); Edward Pomerantz, (CAUGHT), Columbia Professor of Screenwriting; Harrison Reiner, Instructor in Screenwriting, UCLA School of Film and Television; Diana Lesmez, producer (CULTURE CLASH IN AMERICCA) and others.
Commitment to both seminars and the writing work in between is a must – you’ll thank us! And come away with solid screenplays to show for the effort .

FEATURE FILM ANALYSIS SEMINAR: MAY
What are the principles and tools that a writer, director or producer can learn from studying well-made feature films?
How can you use these principles to make your own scripts more exciting and moving, and simplify the difficult job of transforming an idea into an unforgettable piece of cinema?
The purpose of this course is to enable you to study feature films and scripts from the professional’s point of view and to familiarize you with both the problems screenwriters face in the development of a script and the tools they have at their disposal to solve these problems. In short it will familiarize you with the common language professionals use to communicate their ideas in the development and production of feature films—the language of cinematic storytelling
ADVANCED SCENE WRITING SEMINAR: SEPTEMBER
Often times the development of a screenplay - professionally or in workshops - focuses on general discussions of character and structure, rarely affording the writer a response to his detailed work on scenes. The purpose of this course is to remedy that situation and hone your skill in writing the basic building block of all film and television – the dramatic scene. This course is designed for experienced writers; you have a basic knowledge of what a dramatic scene is and how to create meaningful cinematic moments on the page. The use of scenes from ongoing pieces of work will be mixed with daily scene-writing assignments. This will be a laboratory in which you can explore and refine specific scenes from your works-in-progress in a depth and detail not possible in other circumstances. There are two varieties of assignments: scene types (open conflict, hidden conflict, scenes using suspense, etc.) and scene writing problems (exposition, entrances, exits, etc.).
The Latino Writer’s Lab is made possible through the generous support of:
♦ Time Warner, Inc ♦ The Rockefeller Foundation ♦ MTV Networks
♦ The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation ♦ Writers Guild of America , East ♦ ABC/Walt Disney New Talent Development Program
♦ Writers Guild of America , West

TWO LOS ANGELES BASED LATINA FILMMAKERS MAKE A “SHORTSTOP” AT
THE SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST FILM FESTIVAL

Los Angeles, CA. February 2006 – Boy meets girl, girl meets boy’s other girlfriend… such is the tangled web of the plot in the movie “Shortstop” written, directed and produced by two young Latina women that are heating up the entertainment industry with mercurial scarlet. As proof of their careers’ fast ascension, their latest short film has been selected to screen at the prestigious South by South West Film Festival in Austin , Texas .
Risa Machuca and Fanny Véliz’ chance meeting while acting in a film has proven to be the piece that completed each other’s careers’ puzzle because since this dynamic duo joined forces they have produced and acted in films that have won them praise from industry insiders. Latina Magazine named Machuca one of the new power players in the entertainment industry and Ciudad Magazine recognized Véliz as one of the fast rising filmmakers in the entertainment industry.
Risa Machuca’s incarnations include directing music videos for artists such as Angie Martinez, Khalis, Kindred and Michael Bolton. She also worked as second unit director for videos for artists such as Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, Pharrell and Jay Z. This multi talented woman has also graced numerous short films, commercials and recently started opposite Fred Savage in a project entitled “Goinz”.
NALIP member Fanny Véliz has also hit the ground running. Most of her work has been in front of the camera (she will soon be seen in Larry Clark’s Wassup Rockers.) She has written and directed three short films one of which earned her the coveted Promising Film Maker award for the film entitled “Touch Up” at a film festival funded by Josefina Lopez writer of Real Women Have Curves. Fanny’s last film “3some” is successfully making the festival circuit and has screened in N.Y., Dallas , Miami , Washington DC and Hollywood . Véliz is also the founder of Criolla Productions with the goal of shedding a unique light into the urban Latino community.
Their latest film “Shortstop” beat out heavy competition to gain a screening spot at South by South West, one of the most important film festivals in the United States and arguably the world. Machuca and Véliz used their natural talent and charm to raise funds for this film by creating a raffle in which the lucky winner would go on a date with both of them. “Shortstop” was also produced by Joey Mendez.
“Shortstop” is the story of two young Latinas who discover they’re both sleeping with the same man. They confront each other as they reflect on the decision they are about to make… all in the front seat of a car…
“SHORTSTOP” will screen at South by South West film festival the following dates and times:
11:00 AM , Saturday March 11th - Alamo S. Lamar 1
1:30 PM , Monday March 13th - Alamo S. Lamar 1
11:00 AM , Thursday March 16th - Alamo S. Lamar 1

DOCUMENTARY CREW NEEDED
My name is Jessica Sandoval and I am a 3rd year student in the MSW (Social Work) program at the University of Southern California . I am enrolled in a Media for Social Work class and the final project is a 15 minute documentary. My documentary will be focusing on families the live in
motels. I have an interest in this population because I was exposed to the problem in 1998 as an undergrad student at Cal State Fullerton. In 2000 I had the opportunity to work with homeless children while working a summer job for Homes for the Homeless in NYC and then finally as a middle school teacher in East Whittier between 2000-2005, I taught several students that lived in motels. I have had the opportunity to work with these children but yet it still remains a silent epidemic for most. I also find it disturbing that as a graduate student in a social work program I have not been exposed to this issue. I would like to create this documentary to shed light on the
issue for other students as well as my colleagues. I have been an expert panel that is working with my team and I hope to have a few families that will allow us to document their daily experience. I would greatly appreciate it, if anyone would be willing to offer some tips on creating a documentary as well as assistance with editing. We do not have a budget but would be
willing to put our money together to for the editing process. I would greatly appreciate any information or contacts that could help me in my efforts of making my documentary.
Thank you very much. Jessica Sandoval
(NOTE: This is a great project for someone to develop their reel. Please let Jessica know you were referred by Henry K. Priest. She is a personal friend of mine and asked me to reach out to the film community).
