LOS LONELY BOYS: COTTONFIELDS AND CROSSROADS
FILM TO PREMIERE AT SXSW 2006

A Documentary Film on the Band of Brothers
Who Rocked Their Way to the Top of the Music Industry
AUSTIN, TX (February 21, 2006)- Los Lonely Boys Cottonfields and Crossroads, a film by Hector Galán, premieres at the upcoming SXSW Film Festival on Friday, March 17, 2006 in Austin, TX. (www.sxsw.com). This feature documentary tells the story of Los Lonely Boys, the band of brothers from San Angelo Texas who rocked their way to the top of the music industry, determined to fulfill their father's dream. After a childhood of playing cantinas and honky tonks from Texas to Tennessee , Los Lonely Boys blazed onto the music scene with a self-titled 2004 debut release that went multi-platinum and a 2005 Grammy win for their hit single, "Heaven". Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Hector Galán, also a San Angelo native, fuses exciting live performances, vivid imagery of West Texas , and intimate personal stories in a heartfelt and moving film that brings to life Los Lonely Boys' incredible personal musical journey. The film weaves a historical and cultural perspective on the band, their Mexican-American roots, and musical influences. Director/Producer Hector Galán, whose credits include the award-winning documentaries on Tejano and conjunto music, Songs of the Homeland and Accordion Dreams, films for PBS signature series FRONTLINE and THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, the landmark PBS Series Chicano! History of the Civil Rights Movement and the critically- acclaimed six episode Series Visiones: Latino Art & Culture also for PBS, said, "When I first saw Los Lonely Boys perform an amazing rendition of their song Cottonfields and Crossroads, I felt an immediate connection, a profound sense of identity. I knew I had to tell their story. For a filmmaker, the timing couldn't have been better. I was able to capture what became their rise in the American music scene, a time when the stars finally aligned in their favor after so many years of struggle."
Film representative Jose Martinez, Jr. says, "The strong music element of this documentary makes the music driven SXSW the perfect festival for its premiere. Los Lonely Boys Cottonfields and Crossroads is a sensitive and emotional film that depicts a classic rock story told from a Mexican-American perspective, about how family, culture and identity shape dreams."
The film traces the early days as the young family band cuts its teeth learning from their father as they play in country bars and Mexican cantinas in and around San Angelo , Texas . The film travels with them to Nashville where they endure turmoil and heartbreak. These life experiences captured so eloquently by Galán's camera reveal a compelling portrait of a young band of brothers who against all odds break out of poverty and find the American rock n roll dream.

EVERYONE THEIR GRAIN OF SAND
At San Diego City College , 7:00-8:30 p.m.
NALIP member, Beth Bird's EVERYONE THEIR GRAIN OF SAND chronicles the struggles of the fiercely determined citizens of Maclovio Rojas, Tijuana , Mexico , as they battle the state government's attempts to evict them from their land to make way for corporate development. Over a three-year period, we follow the remarkably spirited and resourceful residents of this community as they build a school by hand and persistently petition the state for such basic services as running water and pay for their teachers. The government responds with a combination of bureaucratic stonewalling and the systematic persecution of community leaders --- eventually arresting one leader and forcing others into hiding, where they remain to this day. This heartbreaking and intimate documentary balances these hardships with glimpses of hard-won triumphs and the rhythm of daily life --- an elementary school graduation or time at home with family --- to remind us what the community is fighting for. The film provides a rare glimpse of the human cost of economic globalization in a part of the world where working people are valued only as cheap labor to fuel the profits of multinational corporations. WINNER Best Documentary - Los Angeles Film Festival 2005.
