Reel Works Teen Filmmaking

CALL FOR VOLUNTEER FILMMAKER-MENTORS

Reel Works Teen Filmmaking, an award-winning youth media organization sponsored by HBO, is looking for professional filmmakers to volunteer as mentors for NYC teens as they write, plan, film and edit short documentary films about their lives and communities.

Our core program, The Lab, is the only free after-school filmmaking workshop anywhere that matches each participant one-on-one with a professional filmmaker-mentor. Each fall and spring we recruit twelve passionate and talented high school students from across NYC to participate in the 20-week workshop, which is located at the Prospect Park YMCA in Park Slope, Brooklyn . Mentors guide students through the practical, personal and artistic challenges of expressing their true visions through film. Working side by side with a caring adult helps young people explore their own self worth.

To be a mentor, you must be a NYC media professional with significant documentary filmmaking experience. Mentors receive training and guidance throughout the commitment. Our spring semester begins February 22, 2006 and will complete in late June. For information, an application, and to schedule an orientation, please contact Reel Works Lab Coordinator Kristin Wernicke at kristin@reelworks.org. You can watch films, read about the Lab and the Mentorship Program at www.reelworks.org.

NAHJ Town Hall Meeting March 7, 2006

Dear NALIPsters,

The Daily News of Los Angeles and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) invite you to a special Town Hall meeting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. , Tuesday, March 7, 2006 , at Cal State Northridge’s Satellite Student Union’s Fernandeno Room.

You are welcome to attend this event and are encouraged to let the editors and publisher of the Daily News know what you think of the newspaper’s coverage of the Latino community. Attendance at this event is free, however, you should be aware that California State University , Northridge does charge $4 for parking.

This town hall meeting is part of NAHJ’s Parity Project initiative, which aims to improve the quality of news coverage by encouraging newspapers to hire more Latino journalists so these newsrooms better reflect the communities they serve. The Parity Project also seeks to help these newsrooms establish stronger ties than they might already have with area Latinos who can offer ongoing guidance in covering this growing segment of the community.

At this upcoming meeting, we want to hear from you. What is the Daily News doing right when it comes to coverage of Latinos? Where does it still need to improve?

If you have articles that have been published in the Daily News that are examples of either the right way to cover Latinos, or are examples of areas where the paper needs to improve this facet of its coverage, please bring those with you.

In addition, we ask for your participation in a free, anonymous online survey regarding the Daily News’ coverage of Latinos. It only takes a few minutes to complete. Please encourage other Latinos in your area to complete the survey, too. You can find the survey by visiting:

www.nahj.org/survey/ladailynewsCOMM.html

Please join us March 7, 2006 – and bring a friend.

If you have any questions or plan to attend, please call in your RSVP to 818-713-3688 or email editorialadmin@dailynews.com.

Or contact NAHJ Parity Project Associate Director Rosa María Santana (213) 437-4405 or rsantana@nahj.org.

We look forward to seeing you at the Town Hall meeting.

Sincerely,

Humanities Council Grant for Film on Creator of California’s ‘Mexican Disneyland’

PHOTO: Co-Producer Kevin Bender

Carlsbad, CA —The documentary film Thinking Grande, an intercultural project by NALIP member Kevin Bender of California and Julio Fons of Mexico, has received a prestigious California Documentary Project program grant from the California Council for the Humanities.

Thinking Grande is a work-in-progress about Jose Luis Bonilla and his unfinished ‘Mexican Disneyland’ near Santa Maria , California . Bonilla, a Mexican immigrant and successful businessman turned folk artist, worked with great passion for over 20 years on his masterpiece: an amazingly detailed, grand and beautiful re-creation of a Mexican village intended to showcase genuine Mexican culture in the form of rodeos, horseshows and popular music concerts.

Unable to complete the project and make it a thriving business, Bonilla retreated to Mexico three years ago. In scale, audacity, and achievement, Bonilla’s creation has been compared to Hearst Castle , Watts Towers and the Madonna Inn .

Now 65, he still yearns to finish Así Es Mi Tierra (My Homeland is Like This) which he hoped would serve as a cultural bridge between Mexico and California . His California-born children and grandchildren still live there, tending to the family’s local businesses during the week and, on weekends, dressing in traditional Mexican outfits to ride, rope, and make music.

“In telling the story of three generations of the Bonilla family, we will show how and why Bonilla, a visionary and intercultural ambassador, built his village, but then eventually encountered insurmountable cultural divides and commercial frustration and retreated home to Mexico ,” said filmmaker Kevin Bender. “His children and grandchildren, on the other hand, carry on many of their father’s Mexican legacy here in California .

“In a way, Bonilla has created the piece of Mexico --the cultural bridge--he always wanted to build. But instead of the grand cultural showcase he envisioned with ongoing concerts and rodeos, it is his children and grandchildren who are keeping his vision alive in their own families, identities and lifestyles.”

Bender and Fons are also building a cultural bridge between California and Mexico with this project. Fons, whose film Benjamin was nominated for Best Short Film at Mexico’s Academy Awards or Oscars, is directing the sections of the film shot in Zacatecas, Mexico, where Bonilla now lives and raises fighting bulls. Bender, from Carlsbad , whose previous award-winning documentaries have focused on such diverse subjects as TV preachers and baseball announcers, is directing the California sequences and overseeing the entire project.

The film is intended for completion in 2007 and distribution on public television, Spanish language television and Mexican television. Pictures of Así Es Mi Tierra and more information are available at the project blog http://thinkinggrande.blogspot.com/

The California Documentary Project program grant is supported through a partnership between the California Council for the Humanities and the Skirball Foundation. Eight documentary projects received a total of $400,000 to capture the enduring images and sounds of contemporary California life.

The California Documentary Project is an ongoing program of California Stories, a multiyear initiative designed to connect Californians and foster understanding by uncovering personal and community stories that tell the story of today’s California . A state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Council has supported and created programs that bring Californians together around their history and culture for more than 25 years.
