NALIP/NY 2006 NOMINATIONS & ELECTIONS
It's that time of year again!
In 2003 an Organizational Retreat was held that determined our desire for a strong infrastructure and governance for the local chapter. The only way to have a healthy, proactive and energetic volunteer organization, is when the membership base gets involved and injects a new spurt of energy into a Board that is the engine driving a successful organization.
I am seeking nominations this week, February 06th through 10th, 2006 so that we can hold elections next week.
The Nominations & Elections schedule for this month is as follows:
* Nominations: 02/06-10/2006
* Elections: 02/11-15/2006
* Election results announced: 02/16th
* Newly-elected Board convenes: Monday, 02/20th
* Introduction of new Board: Wednesday, 02/22nd
The following positions are available for nominations:
* President
* Vice-President
* Treasurer
* Secretary
* Membership Chair
* Programming Chair
The following past Board members are running for re-election:
* EDWIN PAGAN: President
* CHERYL WILLIAMS: Vice-President
We are accepting other nominees in the above named positions, as well as
names to fill the other ones.
This is a stellar opportunity to gain leadership skills, gain visibility in the industry, and make a significant contribution to the community of Latinos in media. Without our constituency rolling up their shirtsleeves/blouses,
there is no organization. We are seeking individuals willing to work in collaboration to move one of the strongest chapters in the country onto a higher level. Please get involved or recommend someone who you feel can enhance what we already have at hand.
I look forward to receiving nominations from and about individuals with or without experience who want to aid in catapulting NALIP/NY to the next plane.

Attention NALIPeños!!!
We’re still accepting submissions for the Non-Scripted Television Programming Track for the Upcoming Latino Media Market™! Don’t miss this unique opportunity and submit your pitch not later than February 17, 2006 !
Be the one to win the $2000 prize from SiTV, and have the chance of a lifetime! Your idea could very well be the next Latino Reality TV HIT!

Pitching SíTV – Non Scripted Television Programming
Sí TV is an English-language Latino cable network that “Speaks English & Lives Latin”. They want to hear your non-scripted series ideas. The channel targets 18 – 34 year olds and is looking for general entertainment concepts with high comedic and pop culture appeal.
When constructing your SíTV pitch, keep the following in mind:
- We are an inclusive general entertainment channel, not a niche network, so please exclude programming that isn’t inclusive. (i.e. no sports or news)
- We are not yet a channel that runs live programming nor specials.
- The concept and approach to each series needs to be unique and distinct from our other series.
- So your series can be repeated and rerun effectively, it needs to sustain a long shelf life by not featuring topics that are dated or too topical.
- We love reality series with strong, original hooks (i.e. we are not looking for the Latino version of The Bachelor.) So, please, have a strong hook!
- If you really want to catch our attention, bring us a stage show because we have a 10,000 square foot stage to play with.
- We are young and growing, but must be modest in our budgets. Low budgets do not mean low quality.
- For a true SíTV fit, make your series funny and irreverent.
Applications must include:
- Completed Contact and Project Information Form
- Signed Release form (part of application)
- Each pitch must be submitted in writing, 1-3 pages
- LOGLINE, Genre, Detailed Description
- Project Status: Talent to be Considered, Episode rundown including episodic goals, and explanation of what your role would be, if the project is green-lit.
Please DO NOT miss this opportunity. Follow the link below to download your Latino Media Market™ application TODAY!

2006 Sundance Film Festival Spectrum Film 'La Tragedia De Macario' Acquired For Theatrical Release
At the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, "La Tragedia de Macario" a narrative film by twenty-three year old first-time filmmaker Pablo Veliz was acquired by Arrival Pictures for domestic theatrical release. Park City , UT (PRWEB) January 25, 2006 -- Monday at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, "La Tragedia de Macario" a narrative film by twenty-three year old first-time filmmaker Pablo Veliz was acquired by Arrival Pictures for domestic theatrical release.
Arrival Pictures, coming fresh off the success of "The Keeper: The Legend of Omar Khayyam" and producer's representatives Strategic Film Partners closed the deal two days after the world premiere of the film. Negotiations between Arrival Pictures president Charles Acosta and Strategic Film Partners principals Alex Barder and Lawrence Silverstein went through the night and closed early Monday morning.
The picture premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and has received a great deal of attention due to its compelling narrative storytelling which tackles the controversial and topical subject matter of immigration.
Set against the backdrop of what many consider to be the worst immigrant tragedy in American history, the film explores the complexities of the immigrant's struggles, triumphs, loves and spirit with moving results.
The story is very personal to Veliz, who himself emigrated across the Mexican-U.S. border, and incorporates Veliz's own true life struggles in the film.
"The filmmakers are very excited to have their film released through Arrival Pictures," noted Strategic partner Barder, "Arrival Pictures has made a place for themselves as a preeminent distributor of specialty films with a broad appeal and will do a tremendous job with this remarkable picture."
"La Tragedia de Macario is a compelling and politically controversial film with a powerful message which needs to be heard," said Arrival Pictures president Acosta. Along with Arrival Pictures marketing director Lori Madrid, Acosta is currently targeting a late spring theatrical release.

Reuters - For the first time, a pair of films -- the drama "Quinceañera" and documentary "God Grew Tired of Us" -- won the top awards from both juries and audiences at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday. Full Story

REVIEW: QUINCEAÑERA
Writer-director duo Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland provide a glimpse into the Mexican community of Los Angeles ' Echo Park in "Quinceañera." Revolving around the 15th birthday ceremony that marks a girl's passage to womanhood, this is a fresh, spirited drama, charming and unpretentious. It mines a similar vein to recent Latino-themed pics such as "Raising Victor Vargas" and "Real Women Have Curves" and should yield comparable commercial results.

REVIEW: THE SHORT LIFE OF JOSE ANTONIO GUTIERREZ
Heidi Specogna's "The Short Life of Jose Antonio Gutierrez" sensitively and methodically tells the story of the first U.S. soldier killed in the 2003 Iraq invasion, a refugee from Guatemala . Pic traces
Gutierrez' sad journey -- surviving homelessness in civil war-wracked Guatemala to a new life in the States, where he joins the Marines to get an education. Compact but thorough pic will rack up fest appearances and draw interested buyers in Euro territories.

"CHAGAS/ A HIDDEN AFFLICTION" TO AIR ON PBS
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2006 AT 10 PM ON PBS STATIONS WHTJ (CHARLOTTESVILLE), WVPT (HARRISONBURG), AND WCVE AND WCVW (RICHMOND). AND COMING IN MARCH TO WNVT ( NORTHERN VIRGINIA ).
"Chagas/ A Hidden Affliction", a documentary by NALIP member Ricardo Preve, will air on Friday, February 24, 2006 at 10 PM on four Virginia PBS television stations. In March the film will be broadcast in Northern Virginia .
The stations are:
WHTJ Charlottesville PBS - Channel 41, Cable 7
WVPT Harrisonburg PBS - Channel 51, Cable 6
WCVE Richmond PBS - Channel 23, Cable 23
WCVW Richmond Public Television - Channel 24, Cable 24
WNVT "MHz" Northern Virginia Independent Public Television - Satellite 56, Cable 30
Shot partly in Virginia and Maryland, this documentary tells the story of the Chagas disease, a parasitic infection that affects nearly 20 million worldwide, including an unknown number in the US, and kills 50,000 per year.
Discovered nearly 100 years ago by Dr. Chagas in Brazil , the parasite that causes the disease may remain dormant in the human body for decades. The parasite slowly eats away at the internal organs (heart, intestines, etc) of the victims causing severe health problems, and may lead to sudden death.
Formerly found only in Latin America , it has now become a health concern in Europe and North America , where it still affects primarily the Latino migrant community, but has the potential to become more common through blood transfusions, organ donations, and transmission from infected mothers to their children.
The broadcast was made possible in part by a grant from The Foxfield Races.
"This movie is 5 years ahead of its time… more than cutting edge, it is bleeding edge."
John S. Marr, State Epidemiologist, Virginia Department of Health.
"A new documentary from excellent Charlottesville filmmaker Ricardo Preve… nicely combines his personal perspective as a native of Argentina with a story of critical importance for the health of the people of Latin America- and the US ."
Paul Wagner, Academy Award Winner, documentarian.
"With talent and the self assurance that comes from knowing his subject… Like Michael Moore or Morgan Spurlock, but more serious and less sensationalistic… He does it with clarity and talent, in every line of the script, in every photogram."
Claudio D. Minghetti, Film Critic, “La Nacion”, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Once Upon a Time in the Desert is Finally Completed
We are happy to announce the launch of a new website in support of Volarefilms LLC latest film, Once Upon a Time in the Desert.
Once Upon a Time in the Desert
Post-production of this film was finally completed this past week. Production of this film began on June 12 and 13th, 2004, but post-production was delayed in order do work on Diablita, a 35mm & HD project which stars Jeff Fahey, Amy Weber, Cathy Rankin, Tank Jones, and John Dobradenka.
Due to complications with our investors on the Diablita project, we were finally allowed to finish post-production on Once upon a Time in the Desert. The delay in the production of Diablita may be a blessing in disguise, since it allowed a fine film such as Once Upon a Time in the Desert to be completed and primed to hit the festival circuit.
To access a press release announcing the completion of Once Upon a Time in the Desert, go to Press Release - Jan 25, 2006.
