MAKE THEM TODAY!!!
NALIPsters:
The NALIP Board and Sponsors work tirelessly to produce a great professional Conference for NALIP members and funders each year.
*In order to guarantee a LOW hotel rate, and ROOM for us to stay together, this requires making a hotel commitment 15 months in advance, and requires that we promise that you will attend.
*In order to keep registration rates LOW, we raise funds to supplement the cost of your meals and your activities.
*And in order to make it VITAL, we secure speakers like Spike TV President Pancho Mansfield, Estela Award winners Rodrigo Garcia and Marilyn Agrelo, producers like Frida Torresblanco (CRONICAS), Sergio Aguero (Y TU MAMA) and Bob Teitel (BARBERSHOP), DP's like Rey Villalobos (BORDERTOWN) and Ricardo Gale (WALKOUT), composers like Richard Martinez (FRIDA) and Joseph Julian Gonzalez (COWBOY DE AMOR), performers like Dania Ramirez, Adam Rodriguez and Lupe Ontiveros. Plus Executives from MTV, Comedy Central, Warner Bros, Universal, Fox Searchlight, CBS, ABC, CNN, WGBH, POV, LPB, ITVS and more.
Professionals assemble to advance their projects and careers. But you have to Register and you must make your HOTEL RESERVATION to attend and participate fully. We can only hold these rates for another week -- until FEBRUARY 15. You can double up, collaborate with producers from other programs: there are rates for doubles and triples. If you have attended the LPA, LWL or other NALIP programs, we have invested in you and expect you to participate at the Conference, as well. This sets the professional and creative agenda of the field: come connect with mentors and collaborators, plus meet new funders and investors.
And take advantage of the $165 room rate at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach -- this is low! Low for a professional opportunity. Ask for the NALIP Conference ROOM RATE . Don't miss Conference 7 and all that the Board + staff plans for you.

A GIRL’S LIFE- BAY AREA CHICANA FILM MAKERS RECEIVE PRESTIGEOUS CALIFORNIA COUNCIL FOR THE HUMANITIES GRANT
Oakland , CA —After five years of production on an ambitious project following the lives of four pre-teen girls of color, local Chicana film makers, Dawn D. Valadez and Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, are the recipients of a California Documentary Project program grant, which is supported through a partnership between the California Council for the Humanities and the Skirball Foundation. Eight documentary projects received a total of $400,000 to capture the enduring images and sounds of contemporary California life.
A Girl's Life, shot in Mini-DV over a period of four years, intimately explores the transformative years of girls between the ages of nine and thirteen. Segments of the film and an installation at ProArts Gallery premiered in July of 2005. The project has been produced and directed by NALIP members Kristy Guevara-Flanagan and Dawn Valadez. Guevara-Flanagan has an extensive background as an educator, filmmaker and editor for television and film. Katy Bachman – MediaWeek-- FEBRUARY 02, 2006
For the first time since Nielsen Media Research began measuring New York
using local people meters, Spanish-language TV topped the January ratings
for early fringe and prime-time access.
Noticiero Univision, the Univision TV Network newscast broadcast locally on
owned-and-operated station WXTV was the most-watched news program with a
2.1/8 among Adults 18-49, according to Nielsen, owned by Mediaweek parent
VNU. WXTV's ratings edged out perennial leader, ABC World News on ABC's
owned-and-operated station; WABC scored a 2.0/8.
In prime-time access, Piel de Otono, a telenovela broadcast weekdays 7-8
p.m. on WXTV, beat Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Among Adults 18-49, Piel
de Otono had a 2.3/8 (217,000 viewers), while Jeopardy (2.3/8) and Wheel
(2.3/7) drew 212,500 viewers on WABC. It was the first time in New York that
Jeopardy and Wheel lost the ratings race to a Spanish-language telenovela
among the 18-49 demographic in the history of New York TV ratings.

ADDENDUM: by Edwin Pagan
The media buyers at Madison Avenue have long attempted to undervalue the buying power of the Hispanic entertainment market when seeking to purchase commercial slots, and by extension, to reduce the billing dollars paid for that valuable airtime driven Hispanic content, while hiding behind the oddly inaccurate sampling provided by Nielsen Media Research as their ammunition. This, of course, took place while the advertising agencies clearly knew the actual potential of the market based on such figures as those posed by the national census and actual increase in buying trends from the sector. This technique was very useful at keeping the figures that both regional Hispanic television stations and national networks could charge for their commercial slots, even when the actual audience consumption was at an all time high.
A very large part of the dilemma lies with Nielsen, who has virtually had a monopoly of the figures that the industry uses as "the" and only yardstick by which television-viewing success is measured. For many years the black community had been severely undercounted due to an impractical spread of the Nielson boxes (AKA "black box"). While being a "Nielson Family" is a common occurrence in many Anglo neighborhoods, how many of us in the inner-city have ever even seen the device - a black box in Millbrook Projects - you tell me. Hispanic programming didn't even begin to register in Nielson's ratings until 1992 and Asian and Pacific Islanders only recently became a blip of their radar. But while that all has begun to change, the road to this momentous milestone was a long time in arriving, and not one that has gone gently into the night.
For last several years a coalition of media and activist/watchdog organizations have had a pitched battle with Nielson just to get them to use the proper methodology in regards to communities of color (can you count, sucker?). So it was natural to easily negate the eventuality of what the numbers are now showing at the end of a 3-year protest that forced the company to do more and do it more fairly. This latest figures from Nielson clearly show that the Hispanic/Latino market is fast outpacing the general market in viewership and can bring marked returns for those who invest in it. But already the media-purchasing sector is looking the latest numbers with "conveniently" pessimistic eyes. But this has happened before.
In 2003, Arbitron, radio's rating monitoring system, or the Nielson of radio-waves, if you prefer, showed that the sexy and controversial Spanish-language morning radio program "El Vacilón de la Mañana" (WSKQ 97.9 - La Mega) had overtaken the seemingly unbeatable Howard Stern in the rating's game. The episode was quickly called a "fluke" by marketers and ad buyers alike. In 2004 the show repeated the coincidence and again dethroned the so-called "King of all Media" in the much sought-after 18-49 year age spectrum. Could this have contributed to Stern's flight to Sirius Satellite Radio? Did Stern and Arbitron read the writing on the wall that is only know being deciphered by Nielson and others? Only time will show for sure.
One thing is certain: the old gatekeeper's fanciful and draconian shell games for counting our communities of color are fast being overshadowed as the molehill of truth slowly grows into a mountain that can no longer be hidden behind a thumb in front of a winked eye. Be careful not to poke it out.
