SPECIAL ‘STORY DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP’ ADDED TO CONFERENCE 7 SLATE WITH UCLA INSTRUCTOR/ NALIP MENTOR: HARRISON REINER

A limit of ten writers, writer-producers and writer-directors will be selected for this story development workshop.  Accepted applicants will work an in intensive workshop environment scheduled concurrent with the Conference, to develop well-worked treatments for well-told stories which can then be taken to a first draft screenplay.

Here is what you need to do, please send in your resume, plus a writing sample of either the first 20 pages of a current screenplay OR a previously written treatment as a MS word document to RSVP @ nalip.org.

The goal of the workshop is to jump start writers who have the greatest chance of getting a movie made.  Workshop meetings: First Meeting: Friday, March 10, 6 - 11 pm ; Saturday and Sunday to be discussed amongst participants.

Harrison Reiner has a long list of industry executive and development credits.  He is currently Staff Story Analyst (I.A.T.S.E), CBS Movies of the Week and Mini-Series and Instructor of Screenwriting, Professional Programs, UCLA School of Film and Television. + ON THE SCENE: PARK CITY '06 BUZZ DAILY: "Crossing Arizona " Premiere; Friday Night Party Madness; Saturday Parties by Brian Brooks ( January 21, 2006 )
Outside the Holiday Village theater yesterday, a small gathering of press had assembled around a group of people in the parking lot. A CBS crew and a Reuters cameraman were shooting members of the opposing sides of the national immigration debate.  Joseph Mathew's "Crossing Arizona," screening in the festival's documentary competition, takes a look at the tense stand-off that is occurring along the U.S./Mexican border in Arizona , which has seen thousands die since the mid '90s. The film spotlights the crisis through the personal accounts of Mike Wilson, an Indian living on native land that has become a popular route for migrants, and who works to leave jugs of water in the desert for the people heading north. Ray Ybara works at the A.C.L.U., fighting for migrants' rights and monitoring a civil group known as the Minutemen who made headlines last year by policing the border to stem the flow of illegal aliens.

CASTING: Latino/a Actors for UCLA Grad Film (Short)

Seeking Latino/a actors for an independently produced narrative short directed by a UCLA graduate film student. The film will be shot in color on 16mm, with synch sound, and will be accompanied by an original soundtrack. It is intended to be released widely in the festival circuit.

Production Dates: March 3-8, 2006
Audition Dates: Beginning Jan. 20th (Contact Sandy Vago for further info.)

Synopsis: The film delves into the world of a punk-rock teen named Cheli and her misguided pursuit to retrieve her mother's ring from an East L.A. pawnshop. After giving up her band and selling her drums to buy it back, she finds that her efforts were all in vain. Inspired by the graphic novel series Love & Rockets by Jamie & Gilbert Hernandez, this film aims to present an alternative slice of life in East Los Angeles .

Characters:
--Cheli (Latino/Mexican-American, early to late teens): A head strong, resilient teen who thinks she's mature beyond her years. She's a bit of a misfit, but has good intentions - even though her actions are impulsive and misguided.
--Teresa (Latino/Mexican American, 34-40 yrs old): An edgy, no-nonsense single mom. She is an aging rocker-girl type who can be difficult, but can also show compassion in a "tough-love" sort of way. Not to be confused with the typical Latin mother.
--Beto (Latino/Mexican-American, early to late teens): Cheli's best friend and confidant. He is her voice of reason and sounding board. Outwardly he is sure of himself, but below the surface he's still an insecure teen.
--Diamond Dave (Any type, 40-50 yrs old): Pawnshop owner. Rough around the edges, but a generally nice guy. He's a community fixture.
--Ysenia (Latino/Mexican-American; early to late teens): Cheli's friend and band mate. She has a short temper and little patience with Cheli.

This is a non-paid, non-SAG signatory film. All actors will be provided with a DVD, mini-DV, or VHS copy of the film upon completion of the project.
