NALIP LPA and LWL Mentor Harrison Reiner Invites NALIPsters to Develop their Scripts in His Class

Harrison Reiner, an instructor of screenwriting at UCLA Extension and at UCLA's School of Film and Television, has be a long proponent of promoting diversity in the areas of writing and producing for film and television.  He has been a mentor for NALIP's writing and producing programs for the last two years and is always looking for new young Latino talent to develop.  While his School of Film and Telelvision writing program is full for the quarter, he has a few openings in his Extension course.  While the course is listed under development in the Entertainment Studies Program, the course is a writing workshop for writers and producers.  Writers develop script from pitches and/or treatments or from other underlying material.  Producers develop well-written treatments which can be used as "leave-behinds" at meetings with studios and independent production companies.  Reiner works closes with workshop participants to develop their pitching skills, a must for emerging writers and producers.  Course copy and credits for Harrison Reiner appear below

For registration information, contact Judith Chlipala at UCLA:  (310) 206-5075.

Story Development Workshop for Producers, Development Executives, Directors, and Writers

Over the course of their careers, producers, development executives, directors, and writers are confronted with a wide range of development challenges. This intensive workshop affords participants practical experience in adapting and developing stories for film and television movies from a variety of sources--original ideas, rough draft screenplays and teleplays, novels, short stories, stage plays, magazine articles, and real-life events. Emphasis is not only placed on honing one's own storytelling craft, but also on the spirit and process of collaboration. Workshop participants are called upon to write development notes; treatments; character sketches, and story outlines for motion pictures, movies-of-the-week, and miniseries. Participants are welcome to submit written works-in-progress for in-class critiques.

The National Association of Hispanic Nurses and LatPro.com address Nursing Shortage with Online Job Center and Scholarship Program

FT. LAUDERDALE , Florida – January 02, 2006 – In an effort to support bilingual and bicultural nurses nationwide, the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) and LatPro.com have announced the formation of a new strategic partnership.

Coinciding with the re-launch of NAHN's Web site, the heart of the partnership is an integrated Job Center powered by LatPro.com, the leading employment Web site for professional Hispanic and bilingual talent in the Americas . By leveraging LatPro's extensive database, NAHN's new Job Center enables candidates to access quality job listings and create personalized e-mail “job agents.” At the same time, HR professionals are able to use the Job Center and perform advanced database searches to find in-demand bilingual and bicultural nursing professionals.

In the United States , there exists a significant shortage of multicultural, Spanish-speaking personnel in nursing and other health professions. This disparity is particularly evident in the field of nursing, where Hispanics are vastly underrepresented at a mere 2 percent of the nursing workforce -- a stark contrast to the 14.2 percent represented by Hispanics in the total U.S. population.

Looking ahead, healthcare for Hispanics will be further impacted by population increases. Accounting for half of the 2.9 million U.S. population growth from 2003 to 2004 (U.S. Census Bureau), the Hispanic growth trend is only expected to accelerate. This, coupled with a shortage of Spanish-speaking students choosing healthcare careers, translates into an ever-increasing number of Hispanics facing a lack of healthcare professionals who speak their language.

"We are very pleased to have developed this relationship with a company like LatPro that understands the needs of our unique membership,” says Rudy Valenzuela, MSN, RN, FNP-C, President of NAHN.” Our combined efforts will bring employers and bilingual nurses together, helping to address the need for qualified Hispanic healthcare professionals.”

In addition to assisting current nursing professionals with their career goals, the NAHN-LatPro partnership has prompted the creation of a new LatPro-sponsored scholarship program that will provide financial assistance to Hispanic students pursuing nursing degrees.

“As the nation's population becomes more diverse, the need for a healthcare workforce reflecting that diversity becomes increasingly essential,” says Eric Shannon, President and Founder of LatPro. “We are pleased to support NAHN in its efforts to address the acute shortage of Spanish-speaking nursing professionals in our communities, and we are proud to play even a small part in the solution by funding a scholarship program.”

About NAHN ( www.thehispanicnurses.org)
Since its inception in 1975, the National Association of Hispanic Nurses has grown to 37 chapters across the United States . NAHN strives to improve the nursing and health-care delivery system in the Hispanic community, in addition to promoting equal access to opportunities for Hispanic nurses. Educating students on the growing demand for opportunities in healthcare, providing mentoring and scholarships are of special focus. NAHN's bilingual journal, Hispanic Health Care International , is published three times a year.

Murdoch Wrestles with the Web

Rupert Murdoch indicated Monday that his News Corp divisions are grappling with the opportunities and threats posed by the Internet. Speaking to the Citigroup entertainment, media and telecommunications conference in Phoenix , AZ , Murdoch suggested that producers may one day skip the studios when they realize that they can easily distribute films themselves directly to viewers. Discussing the high costs studios like his 20th Century Fox face in making, marketing and distributing films, Murdoch said, "It's an expensive game ... especially if filmmakers can bypass studios for broadband." He said that for that reason Murdoch is considering moving into Internet broadband itself via its DirecTV satellite service. Earlier attempts at delivering broadband services via home satellite systems like DirecTV and DISH failed because of numerous, seemingly insurmountable problems, particularly slow upload speeds. Rumors have spread recently that News Corp is considering setting up WiMax transmitters that can blanket relatively large areas of communities with broadband service, but Murdoch did not specify how News Corp plans to move forward, saying only. "You'll be hearing from us within two months on a very clear plan what will happen, and it's not as expensive as you might think." He also indicated that he was going to make "millions" of videos available shortly through his newly acquired www.MySpace.com, although it was not clear whether these would simply be music videos or also include feature films.

You'll Soon Be Googling for Movies

NALIPsters:

Google on Friday confirmed reports that it will soon launch its Google Video Store, which will not only sell downloads of CBS programs and NBA games as previously reported, but will also permit independent filmmakers to upload their movies and sell them online at a price they can set. Google will received 30 percent of the revenue generated by such sales. In unveiling the Google Video Store at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Friday, Google co-founder Larry Page said, "From the largest studio to smaller independents, content producers are in charge."

Note:  Google’s fee is roughly what the major studios charge for distribution.
