Michael Eric Dyson to Kick-Off Civil Rights & Film Series ( San Antonio , TX )
Know Why You Are Marching Civil Rights & Film Series Brings Civil Rights Legends to Texas
NALIPsters:
You Are Invited to A Historic Event…
Named by Essence magazine as one of the 50 most inspiring African Americans, Michael Eric Dyson is one of the nation's most renowned public intellectuals and will kick-off the groundbreaking two-month long "Know Why You Are Marching Civil Rights and Film Series" this Saturday, January 7, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Academy Auditorium (3501 Martin Luther King Drive). The event is co-sponsored by the Neighborhoods First Alliance, San Antonio Independent School District , AT&T, 98.5 FM "The Beat", Well Fargo Bank, CPS Energy and is free of charge.
The remarkable range of his cultural appeal is evident when he is celebrated in the pages of Time magazine and US News and World Report, and in the rap lyrics of hip-hop legends KRS-One and Nas. Dyson has appeared across the cultural landscape, lecturing at hundreds of universities, preaching at countless churches, speaking at numerous conventions and conferences – and going toe-to-toe with the titans of television, including Ted Koppel, Bill Maher, Charlie Gibson, Tavis Smiley, Bill O'Reilly, Charlie Rose, Bryant Gumbel, Paula Zahn, Dennis Miller and many other distinguished journalists and personalities. But this ordained Baptist preacher and best-selling author of ten books is just as likely to be found giving talks to the masses in local bookstores, public school auditoriums, and in jails and prisons. Dyson's powerful scholarship has won him legions of admirers and has made him what the Washington Post terms a "superstar professor." Dyson's fearless and fiery oratory has drawn comparisons to Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X, leading the Chronicle of Higher Education to declare that with his rhetorical gifts he "can rock classroom and chapel alike." Dyson's eloquent writing inspired Vanity Fair magazine to describe him as "one of the most graceful and lucid intellectuals writing on race and politics today." And his visible and principled defense of young people - bolstered by appearances like his notable turn on HBO's Def Poetry Jam, where he declared, "I write books/like niggas write hooks" - has earned him the love and affection of millions of youth around the country.
Dyson's literary and political efforts have been rewarded with the 1992 magazine award from the National Association of Black Journalists, the prestigious 2004 NAACP Image Award for outstanding nonfiction literary work for his national bestseller, Why I Love Black Women, and the2005 BET/General Motors Black History Makers Award. Nearly all of Dyson's books have landed on the bestseller's list, including the 2004 New York Times bestseller, Mercy, Mercy Me: The Art, Loves and Demons of Marvin Gaye, which was recently optioned for a major motion picture. He has also written brilliant books on the lives and legacies of some of our most important and controversial social and cultural figures: besides Gaye, they include Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Tupac Shakur. In 2005, Dyson enhanced his written reputation with the publication of his eleventh book in 12 years, Is Bill Cosby Right? Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost Its Mind? Dyson's latest book is entitled Come Hell or High Water, and is slated for release in early 2006.
Dyson has taught at some of the nation's most distinguished colleges and universities, including Chicago Theological Seminary, Brown University , the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , Columbia University and DePaul University . He is presently the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities, and Professor of Religious Studies and Africana Studies, at the University of Pennsylvania . His legendary rise - from welfare father to Princeton Ph.D., from church pastor to college professor, from a factory worker who didn't start college until he was 21 to a figure who has become what writer Naomi Wolf terms "the ideal public intellectual of our time" - may help explain why author Nathan McCall simply calls Dyson "a street fighter in suit and tie."
Rev. Marcia Dyson To Address Katrina & Women's Groups Uniting The Reverend Marcia L. Dyson has been hailed as one of our nation's foremost religious figures and spiritual writers. Her special brand of wisdom and insight has been shared in leading pulpits across America , on lecture stages at many of the nation's outstanding universities, and on the pages of some of our country's most provocative magazines and books. As an ordained minister, stirring public speaker and gifted writer, Rev. Dyson has carried out a ministry of healing to wounded women, neglected children and suffering men throughout America and around the globe.
Rev. Dyson is a native of Chicago , where she attended high school and the University of Illinois and Chicago State University , where she graduated with a degree in business. She served as the first chief of staff for Operation Push's International Trade Bureau under the leadership of Rev.
Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr. Rev. Dyson became a prominent media and public relations specialist, serving as a vice-president of some of Chicago's leading public relations firms, including the Margie Korshack and Robert Dale Agencies. She was also appointed by Mayor Richard Daley to serve as the Public Information Officer for the Mayor's Office of Special Events for the City of Chicago .
In recent years, Rev. Dyson has gained wide notice for her lucid, eloquent essays that have probed the personal, political and religious dimensions of the black female experience. She has treated the historic strengths and gender inequalities of the black church. Her path-breaking essays on these subjects have appeared in Essence Magazine, where she serves as a Contributing Writer. Rev. Dyson is busy at work on several books, including a novel entitled Don't Call Me Angel that explores the spiritual development of an African-American woman, as well as the cultural and racial elements of the sixties and seventies, and a spiritual memoir entitled God Sings Soprano: Discovering the Female Voice of God. Whether she appears in the pulpit, on the auditorium stage or the printed page, Rev. Marcia L. Dyson is one of our country's most provocative, insightful and healing voices. Currently, Rev. Dyson is a Research Associate at the University of Pennsylvania , where she heads the module on the Brazilian Diaspora for the Africana Studies Program. She is also a regular cultural and political commentator on WHUR-FM radio in Washington , DC where she speaks to truth and power on issues concerning race, gender inequality, international politics and national concern.

-National TV Specials: “Dreams”, “Divas” & “Athletes” Debut -
New York , NY / January 4 th, 2006 –AIM Tell-A-Vision ® Group announces the debut of the “American Latino Presents” specials slated to run nationally beginning January 15 th, 2006 . These three one-hour, syndicated specials complement AIM TV’s library of programming and are the result of increasing demand for the company’s English-Language Latino content.
“American Latino Presents-American Latino Dreams” featuring inspiring Latinos living the American dream is the first of three quarterly 2006 specials. Following specials for 2 nd and 3 rd quarters are “American Latino Presents-Latin Divas ” featuring inspiring Latinas and “American Latino Presents-Latino Athletes,” which highlights increasing American Latino influence in sports in the U.S.
The specials are cleared in over 60% of U.S. Hispanic Homes with clearances in key markets on several ABC owned and operated stations including New York-WABC, Los Angeles-KABC, Chicago-WLS, Houston-KTRK and Philadelphia–WPVI. Other key markets include Miami- WFOR/CBS, San Francisco-KBHK/UPN and San Antonio-WOAI/NBC.
“Our specials are unlike anything on television,” states Robert Rose, CEO of AIM Tell-A-Vision Group. “Every week, viewers and media outlets request more programming for American Latinos. Five years ago when we began, the situation was quite different.”
“Our success is the combination of the industry’s recognition of the power of the Hispanic audience and AIM TV’s unique ability to reach this elusive, desirable audience,” Rose continues.
2005 solidified AIM Tell-A-Vision Group’s position as the most in-demand provider of English-Language Latino content. AIM TV’s weekly programs American Latino TV and LatiNation combined audience reach is at an all time high and can be seen in more TV homes than any other English-language Latino-targeted program. The company’s production arm, Maximás Productions, has taken home prestigious industry awards year after year. AIM TV will continue to produce its musically themed Sonidos (Sounds) Specials, currently in their third season.
The company’s distribution arm, AIM TV Distribution, is exhibiting at the upcoming NATPE convention in Las Vegas (January 24–26) with its largest program offering to date. Included in this year’s agenda are presentations enlisting support in AIM TV’s “Change The Sample” effort with Nielsen Media Research (www.ChangeTheSample.com). The company will also screen a completely retooled Play More, a half hour weekly scheduled for a Fall 2006 rollout.

ClickFlicks.net goes live on January 15 th 2006
Offering the best in independent film and television content, ClickFlicks.net will go live on January 15th, 2006 with over 100 independently produced film and television projects. Unlike competitors such as iFilm and Atom Films, ClickFlicks.net is dedicated to the true independents, those who have mastered the art of “doing whatever it takes” to get their projects made.
In an age when investment money is nearly impossible to come by, the independent often gets the short end of the stick and is forced to beg, borrow and steal for production funds. Even if the film is successfully funded and completed, the independent immediately faces an uphill battle towards securing exhibition and distribution deals.
Festival submission seems to be a logical route for completed films, but with most festivals giving preference to “pseudo-independent” Hollywood films, little room is left for the true independents. No entries in major festivals means no exposure to major distributors.
Local screenings are a more feasible route, although exposure is limited and rarely leads to a distribution deal.
Submitting a film directly to a distributor can be the same as throwing it into a black hole. If the independent is lucky enough to have his or her film viewed, chances are slim to none that it will be picked up for distribution. In the rare case that a deal is offered, distributors have already tasted the desperation and take full advantage – offering the independent a tiny percentage of what is deserved.
ClickFlicks.net addresses the plight of the independent by providing an effective exhibition and distribution environment that features only independently produced content. Complete with online festivals, 24/7 screenings, trailers and a target audience of millions per month, ClickFlicks.net truly has everything the independent needs to find success in the world of entertainment.
