Latina Marilyn Agrelo on Academy "Short list" for 78th Academy
Award Documentary Nomination

Marilyn Agrelo's MAD HOT BALLROOM today made the short list for the Oscar Documentary Feature Category.  Eugene Hernandez of INDIEWire reported that fifteen documentary films have been selected for the "short list" of titles competing for one of five nominations for the 78th Academy Awards. Eighty-two eligible films were submitted for consideration for the Best Documentary Feature category this year, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Ms. Agrelo and her co-producer, Amy Sewell, first-time filmmakers, went to three public schools in different parts of New York and followed their students through the stages of competition leading to a final event at the World Financial Center . The prize was a trophy taller than most of the competitors, and also the kind of glory that fuels the dreams of many young people.  The film premiered at SLAMDANCE in January 2005, and has been in release since this summer.

Other films on the Short List for 2005t are:

"After Innocence," directed by Jessica Sanders

"The Boys of Baraka," directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady

"Darwin's Nightmare," directed by Hubert Sauper

"The Devil and Daniel Johnston," directed by Jeff Feuerzeig

"Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room," directed by Alex Gibney

"Favela Rising," directed by Matt Mochary and Jeff Zimbalist

"March of the Penguins," directed by Luc Jacquet

"Murderball," directed by Henry Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro

"Occupation: Dreamland," directed by Ian Olds and Garrett Scott

"On Native Soil: The Documentary of the 9/11 Commission Report," directed by Linda Ellman

"Rize," directed by David LaChapelle

"Street Fight," directed by Marshall Curry

"39 Pounds of Love," directed by Dani Menkin

"Unknown White Male," directed by Rupert Murray

While fifteen films were selected for consideration this year, twelve were chosen for the Oscar documentary feature "short list" last year, with "Born Into Brothels" ultimately winning the Oscar. The nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 31, 2006 and the Oscars will be presented on Sunday, March 5, 2006 .

Eligible documentaries were screened by the Documentary Branch Screening Committee, made up of members of the branch who serve on a volunteer basis. The above films were chosen after a preliminary round of screenings.

Argentina New Cinema 2005 Begins Thursday Night

‘El Perro’ 2005 | Thursday, November 17 - 7:30 PM

Director: Carlos Sorin
Venevision | 97 min. - Color

Juan Villegas worked in a gas station for the past twenty years. Once the business is sold off, the new owners decide to "modernize" and he gets fired.

Unemployed and without clear prospects, Juan never loses his sense of solidarity, when helping a vehicle broken down in a desert road. He is paid back with a bulldog. And his luck turns. He is now flattered for his new dog, and Juan, as his owner, feels entitled to some of this adulation.

He is then contacted by an exhibition trainer, and in the first challenge, the animal wins an honorable third place. Celebrating at a restaurant, Juan also meets what he sees as a very attractive singer, and feels on cloud nine. Soon, however, Juan will realize that instincts can also be used against you.

CASTING CALL: La Virgen de Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin

The Latino Theater Company is seeking community cast members for our annual holiday pageant play "La Virgen de Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin."  This marks the fourth year that LTC and Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral offers this Holiday Gift free to the public.  Due to popular demand, "La Virgen..." will be performed for two consecutive nights, Dec. 7th & 8th at 8:00PM .

This beautiful play, performed in Spanish with music and dance, re-tells the story of the apparition of the Virgin Mary to the Indian peasant Juan Diego in the hills of Tepeyac. Because of its universal message of faith, love and perseverance, the pageant appeals to many people, regardless of race, language or religion. Renowned Mezzo Soprano Suzanna Guzman has agreed to once again sing the title role of La Virgen de Guadalupe. LTC members, professional musicians, Aztec dancers and a large community ensemble of children, youth, adults and seniors complete the cast.

We hope that you will join us in offering this Holiday Gift to Los Angeles by being part of the community cast!  Children, youth, adults and seniors of all communities are welcome!  You do not have to speak Spanish to be part of the community cast. Please see the rehearsal schedule below:
