NALIP 2005 Latino Writers Lab™ - March 23rd Deadline

Every movie in release, every film at a festival, every telefilm or DVD at Blockbuster, began with a script.  Every shooting script began as a first draft.  Every first draft was a treatment or a concept.  It seems like everyone has a screenplay but, the truth is, every producer and funder is looking for a good one.  The more great screenplays that Latinos write, the more films will be made and the more writers will go on to careers writing and rewriting for film and television.  This is the path to a louder Latino voice in media.

NALIP (National Association of Latino Independent Producers) holds an annual National Latino Writers Lab™.  This four-day intensive seminar brings writers from around the nation to do comprehensive development on works-in-progress, to meet with agents and producers, and to have one-on-one mentoring with leading industry professionals.

"In 2003, we inaugurated this program to develop Latino/a film and television writers," says NALIP Board Chair Frances Negron-Muntaner.  "Writers represented 8 states and the commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and not only matured their craft, but met producer/ funders and were signed by agents and managers."

The Lab includes 45 hours of seminar time, professional lunches with producers, agents, execs and entertainment attorneys, plus one-on-one mentoring sessions with notable writers.

"More material and well-developed scripts means two things: more viable Latino/a projects for packaging and production and more Latino/a writers ready to work on assignments, rewrites, and series staffs," says NALIP Executive Director Kathryn Galan.  "While Latino representation on shows and features still hovers around the 2 - 4% level, NALIP will do anything possible to develop, expose and support our talented writers."

DESCRIPTION
The Latino Writers Lab™ is a unique program for NALIP members who aspire to work as professional screenwriters, or who desire to develop a strong, viable screenplay for production or sale.  It includes skills development by professional instructors, direct mentoring of the work-in-progress by writer/mentors, and professional lunches on legal and guild information.  Only 12 – 15 writers will be selected to participate in this 8-day intensive workshop.  The first four-day seminar, FEATURE FILM ANALYSIS, will be conducted in New York City May 4 - 8, 2005.

All projects accepted and mentored must be developed and rewritten during the summer of 2005.  The second four-day seminar, ADVANCED SCENE WRITING, will be held in Santa Monica, CA, September 22-25.  Completed scripts (first drafts based on workshop treatments or polished drafts following development input) must be submitted for review by August 28 to be considered for the second part of the workshop.

INPUT 2005 (San Francisco, CA)

Filmmakers: Stand for Justice!

We, the undersigned hotel workers, members of UNITE HERE Local 2 in San Francisco, need your support.  We have been negotiating with hotel employers for eight months, fighting for fair wages and pensions, affordable health care, and a respectful relationship now and in the future.  In the fall, the Hilton and 13 other Multi-Employer Group Hotels denied us access from our jobs, “locked us out”, trying to starve us into accepting a bad contract.  All of this has happened at a time when hotel profits and occupancy rates are at a three year high and continue to climb.

INPUT is planning on holding your annual convention in our city at the Hilton Hotel.  The employees of this hotel have called for a boycott, and our union pickets these hotels regularly.  For this reason alone, your group would be well served to move your convention to unaffected hotels in the city.

We would like to let you know who we are. We are predominantly immigrants.  We work hard to make sure that San Francisco’s number one industry, tourism, runs smoothly and is prosperous.  While we don’t earn a high income, we have fought hard to maintain a middle class standard of living that includes health benefits for ourselves and our families.  Now that standard of living is under attack.  Our employers have proposed eliminating health benefits for hundreds of employees.  We are also fighting so that people who work in this industry for many years can retire with a pension that allows them to live in dignity.

You have an opportunity to help us in our struggle by sending a message to our employers.  When you move your meeting from our boycotted hotels, you get us one step closer to settling this labor dispute.  When groups move their meetings, it shows our employers that our struggle extends beyond our union, and that groups like yours do believe in justice.  All of this means that INPUT has the chance to play an instrumental role in ending these bitter contract negotiations.  On behalf of all San Francisco hotel workers and our families, please stand in solidarity with us and move your convention out of the Hilton Hotel and into a non-boycotted hotel.

If you would like to support our cause, please contact Kelly Dugan at 415 864 8770 x751, kdugan@unitehere2.org.  For more information, visit www.unitehere2.org

‘Ollin’ To Perform in East Los Angeles for St. Patrick’s Day Celebration

LA WEEKLY, MARCH 17

Kate: So, Ben, what’s up for St. Patty’s?
Ben: Ollin’s performing Pogues covers in East L.A.!
Kate: That Mexican punk band?
Ben: Yeah — they’re doing the entire Rum, Sodomy and the Lash album!
Kate: That’s crazy talk.
Ben: Ever heard of the San Patricios?
Kate: Come again?
Ben: They were a battalion of Irish soldiers who deserted the American army to fight for Mexico during the Mexican-American war.
Kate: No sh**?
Ben: They had more in common with the Mexicans — besides green being the national color. Catholicism, the history of being occupied, being poor . . . the accordion.  They still
commemorate the San Patricios in Mexico.  It goes deep.
Kate: That makes sense, plus they both share the whole storytelling thing.
Ben: The oral tradition.  To this day, that’s how the Mexican traditions are kept going.
Kate: And having their native languages outlawed.  And the tragic ballads — you know, "Johnny boy sailed away and his ship went down . . ."
Ben: All you have to do is replace "sailed" with "crossed the border" — rancheras are all about losing your loved one and drinking your sorrows away.  That’s very Celtic.  No one talks about drinking like the Irish and the Mexicans.
Kate: And no one gets stereotyped for drinking like we do!  Thanks for blowing my mind, Ben.
Ben: Any time.

Conference VI Volunteer/NALIP Intern, Cyrus Ahanchian

NALIP Board, Staff and myself, Jose Murillo (Membership Coordinator), would like to take this opportunity to CONGRATULATE our very loyal and hard-working Intern, Cyrus Ahanachian, for having been hired as a Writer's Assistant 'on the spot' during our Sixth Annual NALIP Conference, In Huntington Beach, CA, just last week.

Like many similar e-mails/phone calls I have received since our Conference--underlining the true potential of simply attending NALIP's annual gathering-- Cyrus' hard work, perseverance and passion for film were enough to get him noticed by noted comedic writer Rick Najera, who is responsible for writing the acclaimed Latinologues about Latino life in America.  Najera's early works have also been seen on long-running and historic sketch comedy shows MAD TV and In Living Color.

Once again, congratulations Cyrus and keep up the good work.  You certainly exemplify the ideals of NALIP and we all know that this will be one of many future successes to come your way.

To quote a fellow Trojan colleague of ours, Jose 'Pepe' Ochoa...

"Success!"

Jose Murillo,

NALIP Membership Coordinator

Seeking Feature Film Producer

We have a completed screenplay adapted from a popular novel by Graciela Limon, we are seeking a feature film producer which relates the intimate tale of Hummingbird - - or Huitzitzilin in her native Nahuatl - an Aztec princess who is reduced to the level of concubine then even servant, all within the larger epic context of the Conquest of Mexico.

While living in Moctezuma's court and experiencing the joys and heartbreak of her first love, Hummingbird witnesses the wondrous arrival of Cortez and the Spanish Conquistadores, those bearded and armored gods who descended from their galleons on horseback to brutally devastate her land and her people.  She mournfully recounts the savage battles which led to the fall of the once-great city of
Tenochtitlan , the ancient Aztec capital, along with the suffering she felt upon losing her identity, her language and traditions, and even her ancestral gods.

Expressing a confidence and freedom that women have strived for centuries to
attain, Hummingbird passionately relates her tale to Father Benito, the young priest who wishes to confess her and offer her an absolution which she neither needs nor wants.  In an ironic twist, through the telling of her epic story, Hummingbird is able to convert Father Benito, making him question his own teachings and see the conquest through the eyes of the conquered for the first time.

Song of the Hummingbird pays homage to the pre-Columbian woman, celebrating
the endurance of the human spirit in the face of cataclysm and mourning the collective loss of indigenous treasures infinitely more valuable than all of the plundered Spanish gold.
