The Dog

Director: Carlos Sorin
Venevision | 97 min. - Color

Juan Villegas worked in a gas station for the past twenty years. Once the business is sold off, the new owners decide to "modernize" and he gets fired.

Unemployed and without clear prospects, Juan never loses his sense of solidarity, when helping a vehicle broken down in a desert road. He is paid back with a bulldog. And his luck turns. He is now flattered for his new dog, and Juan, as his owner, feels entitled to some of this adulation.

He is then contacted by an exhibition trainer, and in the first challenge, the animal wins an honorable third place. Celebrating at a restaurant, Juan also meets what he sees as a very attractive singer, and feels on cloud nine. Soon, however, Juan will realize that instincts can also be used against you.

Chica Luna Productions AnnouncesBRAGGING RIGHTS” – Fundraising Event

Sneak Peek of First-Ever Stickball Documentary

New York , NY - Nov 15, 2005 Chica Luna Productions presents an advanced screening of the first-ever documentary on stickball, BRAGGING RIGHTS. The screening of this documentary, scheduled for airing on PBS, will take place on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 , at the Julia de Burgos Cultural Center as a fundraiser for post-production work.

Known as “the poor man’s baseball,” stickball has been played on the streets of New York City since the early 1920’s. It’s the ultimate sport that improvises much with very little: stolen broomsticks have been used in lieu of bats and fire hydrants can serve as third base. BRAGGING RIGHTS chronicles how stickball has developed leadership, mended racial tension, and created lifelong friendships throughout its long and vibrant history. “When I was growing up, you couldn’t cross east to west in Harlem ‘cause you got beat up,” recounts 87-year-old African-American Charlie Ballard, the oldest player in stickball. “If it wasn’t for stickball, I wouldn’t have met [Italian-American] Vito, who’s become like a brother to me.” Irish-American John Stephens shares his story of being the first white player on an all-black team in 1949. “It was unheard of back then,” Stephens said. “I was Jackie Robinson in reverse.”

A film editor whose credits include films such as MALCOLM X and THE HORSE WHISPERER, NALIP Member Sonia Gonzalez produced and directed this project. “Stickball is like a feisty old man: a remnant of New York City ’s past that refuses to be forgotten in a rapidly changing landscape,” says Gonzalez, a native New Yorker. “Stickball is old school New York , something we do not see a lot of these days. ” BRAGGING RIGHTS examines the struggle and healing of a community through sports. The players strive to push stickball beyond neighborhood nostalgia and into a revered cultural practice.

BRAGGING RIGHTS , the recipient of a highly competitive production grant from Latino Public Broadcasting, will be part of a documentary series to be aired on PBS in 2006.

Spoken Word Performers Needed for Cable Television Pilot

NALIPsters:,

We are looking for two (2) Spoken Word artists to perform on our show (TV Pilot) that will be shot in-studio on Nov. 22, 2005 .

We need:
--One (1) female spoken word artist (any race)
--One (1) Hispanic spoken word artist (male or female)

The length of the piece cannot exceed 3 minutes and not less than 2 minutes. We do NOT want "hate/Anger" themes. We are looking for works that describe either current conditions in the world/country, social injustice, war, politics, love, friendship, and basically any theme that ends with a message of future hope.  There are many more subjects that we will also consider - but the primary concern is to avoid depressed or hopeless endings. Which means - if the piece starts with a hate/anger motive, then it must end with hope/love.

I hope that all makes sense. Now we know why I am not a poet.

Age is not necessarily a consideration. The artist must be able to perform on stage with a professional style.

Due to a small budget we can only offer a token payment of $100 per artist.

The show will broadcast on New Years Eve on Comcast cable throughout Southern California (1million plus homes) from midnight ( Jan 1st 2006 ) to 1am .

Studio location is in Irvine , CA

To submit, you must say you were referred by Jeff Gund, and please send an email with mp3 files or a link to your website to:  jctappenden@jet75.com
