

The Puerto Rico chapter of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers Association (NALIP), in conjunction with the San Juan Cinemafest and the Puerto Rico Film Corporation, will sponsor a full day of free panels on feature film pitching, finance, and distribution for indie filmmakers, beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, November 10, at the Normandie Hotel in San Juan, according to Frances Lausell, president of NALIP-PR.
Participants will include NALIP Executive Director and independent producer Kathryn Galán, veteran entertainment attorney and producers’ representative Mark Litwak, long-time personal manager and award-winning producer Marilyn Atlas, Ostrow and Company financing executive Pamela Peak , and Venevisión International Film and Theater Division Manager Julio Noriega.
The programming schedule will include the following panels, both of which will be conducted in English:
9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. : “Pitching: Get Your Project on Its Feet”
12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. : Working Lunch
2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. : “Risky Business: Financing & Distributing Indie Films”
The first 90 minutes of the working lunch will be devoted to presentations by Ana María García of the San Juan Cinemafest and Ramón Almodóvar, president of the Puerto Rico Producers Association (APCA), followed by a Q&A session with guests Arturo Rodríguez Fernández, International Director of Cine Santo Domingo and Director of the Cine Santo Domingo Film Festival; Peruvian film director (“Alias ‘La Gringa’” and “Doble Juego”); and Mexican producer-director José Luis García Agraz (“El Misterio del Trinidad”). During the final 30 minutes, five volunteers from among the attendees will be given the opportunity to pitch a film project and receive critiques and feedback.
Kathryn Galán has established NALIP as the preeminent national Latino media organization in the U.S. , dedicated to increasing the quality and quantity of Latino/a film, television and documentary projects by supporting Latino/a writers, producers, directors and creative talent and advocating on their behalf. NALIP runs regional programs plus four national Signature programs: the Latino Writers Lab™ held in New York each spring and Santa Monica, California each fall; the intensive 10-day Latino Producers Academy™ held in Tucson, Arizona each summer; a national Conference that welcomes over 600 makers and funders each spring, and the Latino Media Resource Guide™, the go-to source for information on Latino directors, writers, producers, craftspersons, funders, diversity opportunities, distributors, and film programs.
Mark Litwak’s entertainment law practice includes work in the areas of copyright, trademark, contract, multimedia law, intellectual property, and book publishing (“Dealmaking in the Film and Television Industry,” “Risky Business: Financing and Distribution of Independent Film”). As a producers’ rep, Litwak assists filmmakers in the marketing and distribution of their films through such renowned film festivals as Cannes , Toronto , Telluride, and others. At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, three of his clients had films acquired for distribution: HUSTLE & FLOW, which won the Audience Award ( Paramount ), THE MATADOR (Miramax), and MARILYN HOTCHKISS BALLROOM DANCING AND CHARM SCHOOL (Goldwyn).
Equally at home in the worlds of film, television, and live theater, Marilyn Atlas is a founding member of Women in Film’s Luminas Committee, which supports the portrayal of women in non-stereotypical roles in film and television, and is committed to finding projects that reflect diversity and non-stereotypical characters. Among her credits as a film producer are REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES for HBO, which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, A CERTAIN DESIRE, starring Sam Waterston, and ECHOES, which won the Gold Award at the Texas International Film Festival.
Pamela Peak is Director of Business Development at Ostrow and Company, a full service consultation and film representation company whose corporate mission is to guide and assist in the development, packaging, financing, and distribution of quality feature film projects. To date the company has arranged financing and negotiated distribution for more than 80 feature films, TV movies, and documentaries. Pamela is also the producer/director of the documentary COLORBLIND.
Julio Noriega heads up the film and theatrical division for Venevisión International, which over the past 30 years has been one of the most important providers of Spanish language programming for Latin America and the world, positioning its productions in more than 20 languages and currently reaching 97% of the entire U.S. Latino population, thanks to its association with Univisión Communications.

Latino Issues in the Cinematic Spotlight
21 st Film Arts Festival of Independent Cinema
November 3-9, 2005
Extraordinary documentaries and narrative features explore Latino culture and identity, and the vibrant Latino presence in the California and the U.S. at this year's festival.
On the narrative front, playwright Octavio Solis premieres his first feature film PROSPECT (screening November 6 at 4:10pm ), in conjunction with The Ballad of Pancho and Lucy at Intersection for the Arts/Campo Santo (October 26 through November 21, 2005 , Thursdays through Sundays, 8pm ). Adapted from his stage play of the same title, PROSPECT is a dark, character-driven comic drama that takes place over a single night of confrontation and soul-searching. The main character, Scout, played by Bay Area Sean San Jose, finds himself in an uncomfortable situation where he is forced to confront his personal issues
Touching on the subject of racial tensions, NUESTRA FAMILIA, by Oriana Zill de Granados (screening November 5 at 12noon), explores gun and gang violence that plagues the Latino community of Salinas , California . NUESTRA FAMILIA is part of the Mother Jones Agitators and Instigators series.

About Mariachi culture and immigration, ROMÁNTICO, by Mark Becker (screening November 6 at 2pm), is tangentially about States/Mexican economics and the subterranean American alien community as it follows an illegal immigrant who makes a living serenading in the Mission district of San Francisco. The screening will open with live music by Trio Los Románticos. Mark Becker will answer questions after the film. ROMÁNTICO is part of the Mother Jones Agitators and Instigators series.
Focusing on economical disparities, RANCHO CALIFORNIA (POR FAVOR) , by John Caldwell (screening November 5 at 1:45pm ), looks at the gap between wealthy suburban Southern Californians and their neighbors living in nearby migrant labor camps. RANCHO CALIFORNIA (POR FAVOR) is part of the Mother Jones Agitators and Instigators series.

NALIP Member Gabriela Tagliavini making waves...

Voy goes 'Public' with pic English-lingo film to include Spanish-language elements

Fledgling U.S. Latino shingle Voy Pictures has unveiled its debut pic "Public Emily," an action adventure romp to be directed by L.A.-based Argentine helmer Gabriella Tagliavini ("Ladies Night").
Story, written by GiGi New, follows a jet-setting heiress who comes of age while lost in the jungles of South America . Pic is set in Colombia but may shoot in Mexico , Argentina or Costa Rica . Budget will range between $3 million and $5 million.
"This is exactly the kind of movie we have been looking for -- one that straddles both the English-and Spanish-speaking worlds," Voy Pictures prexy Lourdes Diaz said. Pic will shoot mainly in English but include Spanish-language elements.
Tagliavini's feature directorial debut, "The Woman Every Man Wants," won helmer awards at the 2001 New York Independent Film Festival; No-Dance Film Festival in Park City, Utah; and Latino Film Festival in San Francisco.
Her sophomore effort, "Ladies Night," was Mexico 's No. 1 pic in 2003. It is slated for a U.S. release by Televisa Cine next month.
New has written for Nickelodeon's award-winning "The Brothers Garcia" and for Fox's "The Ortegas," starring Cheech Marin. "Public Emily" is New's first feature.

Haiku Films set for San Francisco shoot
SAN FRANCISCO , OCT 31 -- Haiku Films completed principal casting for the production company’s first narrative short ‘Soledad Is Gone Forever.’ Carla Ohana Sanchez of Los Angeles joins the all-Latino cast as Soledad Gonzalez. Bay Area actors Carlos Baron, Gigi Guizado, Michael Torres and Araceli Marie Gonzalez, as the 8-year-old Soledad , round-out an exceptional cast. Haiku Films principal and current NALIP Member/NALIP SF Chair, Mabel Valdiviezo wrote the powerful screenplay and will direct. Bay Area filmmaker Julie Rubio is producing. Production begins December 8 in San Francisco .

‘Soledad Is Gone Forever’ delivers a stirring psychological portrait of a 28-year-old Chilean exile who remains haunted by the Pinochet reign of terror more than two decades ago. As Soledad Gonzales struggles to regain her memory without losing her sanity, she returns to Chile hopeful of reclaiming her father’s remains and reconciling with the country’s violent past.
This film explores the long-term consequence of war and its effect upon many generations. ‘Soledad Is Gone Forever’ gives voice to a global community of forgotten exiles, offers the universal hope of healing and delivers a resolve to prevent further violations of an individual’s human rights.

"Fingerdance"
Tutti, and his father Chi Cho, haven't always had the greatest relationship. Although Chi Cho supports his family financially, he lacks the ability to support them emotionally and morally. Fingerdance tells the story of Tutti, a Chicano kid from East LA , and his growing resentment towards his violent and harsh father. The film takes us through Tutti's childhood memories of growing up in East LA during the 1970's, as he tries to piece such memories together in order to make sense of their broken relationship. When Chi Cho is diagnosed with stomach cancer and is left physically and mentally helpless, Tutti is left trying to figure out how to make the best of such memories in order to start a new relationship with his father in his last days.
"Ehecatl"
Ehecatl, a 20 year old chicano, is having a difficult time dealing with his inability to comprehend his own existence as well as his role in this world. Ehecatl turns to his girlfriend Soledad for comfort and in the process ends up loosing his life. The film then begins to examine the different possibilities of an after life. Through these reoccurring events the audience begins to see the strong and powerful relationship that these two people have created with one another and we continue to follow Ehecatl's growth to an
enlightened adult.
