Tastemakers: Influential Film Directors

www.Forbes.com By: David Ng

A good film, the great British director Alfred Hitchcock once said, is one that makes the price of dinner, admission and a babysitter seem worth it.
Every year thousands of films are produced, from multimillion-dollar special effects extravaganzas to student films shot on the cheap in a parent's backyard. But few of them, alas, are "good." Despite the fact that Americans spent more than $9.4 billion going to the movies in 2004, too often we leave the cinema feeling vaguely condescended to, at best, or cheated of our money, at worst. But, to Hitchcock's point, every now and then we see a film that, especially in this day of $100 dinners, $10 movie tickets and $15 an hour sitters--not to mention additional dosh for popcorns and Milk Duds--is very much worth it.
