ESL

Cima Productions is proud to present ESL, written and directed by NALIP member, Youssef Delara. A native of Los Angeles , Delara’s vision for ESL stemmed from his own experiences living in polyglot Los Angeles . Through his carefully and sensitively realized characters, this riveting new film, ESL, artfully explores the explosive issues of immigration and acculturation as it follows the harrowing journey of hope against staggering odds of an illegal Mexican immigrant into the U.S. The title, taken from the academic acronym for “English as a Second Language,” reflects the challenging choices immigrants must make to succeed in the dominant culture, while not forsaking their own native cultures. It’s a rich and complex portrayal of the charged dynamics at work for millions of Latin American immigrants to the U.S. ESL draws in powerful and memorable performances from its line up of heavy hitting Latino actors like Maria Conchita Alonso, Kuno Becker, Sal Lopez, and Efrain Figueroa.
Premieres at the Los Angeles Latino Film Festival on October 28, 2005 at 9:00pm at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre.

East Los Angeles , CA —“X & J Customs,” from U.S.-Brazilian company Picante Pictures, begins shooting here on Monday, October 17th. With a writing team led by veteran showrunner Bentley K. Evans (MARTIN, THE JAMIE FOXX SHOW), the dramedy short will feature rising Latino star Efren Ramirez (NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE, WALKOUT), Colombian-American Patricia Rae (MARIA FULL OF GRACE, SWIM FAN) and veteran Latino stand-up comedian Luke Torres (“In Living Color,” SPACE JAM). According to the producers, script revisions were contributed by Carlos Bermudez (LOS BELTRAN) and veteran Latino scribe Rick Najera, whose LATINOLOGUES has just opened its Broadway run and is being directed by comedy superstar Cheech Marin.
A film and television production company, Picante Pictures recently sold 13 episodes of “Mano a Mano,” an American-style Afro-Brazilian sitcom set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro , to RedeTV , Brazil ’s fastest growing open-TV network. The company has several feature and TV projects in development for the U.S. market, including a feature biopic of East LA boxer Oscar de la Hoya and a sitcom based on the life of NASA rocket scientist-turned-comedienne Shayla Rivera.
Set in a successful auto-detailing and customization shop, “X & J Customs,” is unique, says Morales, in that it provides a fascinating—as well as highly entertaining—glimpse into the burgeoning Urban Latino landscape. Efren Ramirez stars as comic foil “Puppet” to shop owner “Javier Sanchez,” played by Torres. Rae appears as “Rosalee,” Javier’s sassy wife and business partner. The project will be filmed in high definition at A & G Custom Sounds on Whittier Blvd. , a custom car cruising corridor in East LA for nearly fifty years.
“The Urban Latino population has reached critical mass. And while Latinos have contributed significantly to custom car culture in America , it’s become universal” says Morales.
“With this film, which is adapted from our series ‘Mano a Mano’ in Brazil, we can gauge the appeal of this particular concept to audiences in LA, Chicago, Miami, New York and Houston as well as many other cities where the Urban Latino culture has become mainstream,” he adds.
For more information or to schedule an interview, contact Picante Pictures at 310-694-3574, PicantePublicity@gmail.com. Photos and press kit available on request. A & G Sounds is located at 5747 Whittier Blvd.
