Public Media Caucus – Los Angeles
Sunday, October 16, 2005 @ 2:00pm to 5:00pm

California State University , Los Angeles
Music Building , Rm. 149
5151 State University Drive
Los Angeles , CA   90032-8111

What role should public media play in the American media landscape? What should a vibrant, sustainable public media ecology look like? The Center for Digital Democracy is holding a participatory caucus to outline what public media should be in the United States and how we can make it so. All of us are deeply concerned about the current state of the media, but unlike efforts in other countries, the U.S. has lacked an open, deliberative process to determine our public media needs and how to effectively meet them. The purpose of the caucus is to actively engage the independent media producing, distribution, activist, and funding community and those institutions that regularly use independent media such as libraries and museums in developing strategies to ensure a vibrant public media ecology.

Join panelists Aliza Dichter, Center for International Media Action, filmmaker Evangeline “Vangie” Griego, Anthony Riddle, Alliance for Community Media, and Jake Shapiro, Public Radio Exchange, who will provide an overview of independent media including a brief history of media production, distribution, and activism, along with examples of new production and distribution paradigms that are proving successful in generating audiences and revenues. The panel will be moderated by media consultant, Alyce Myatt.

The format of the Caucus will begin with the panel followed by a question and answer segment after which we will break into smaller working groups where the audience will participate in outlining public media needs and identifying strategies and tactics. We will then reconvene as a whole, with the groups reporting-out their key points. We will consolidate the information and determine specific action steps for moving forward.

The Caucus will take place on Sunday, October 16, 2005 , from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at California State University , Los Angeles , Music Building , Rm. 149, 5151 State University Drive , Los Angeles , CA   90032-8111

This is third in a series of caucuses the Center for Digital Democracy will be conducting around the country. (The first was held in San Francisco and the report can be found at http://www.democraticmedia.org/ddc/PublicMediaCaucus.php . )

We are working in concert with other local and national organizations and individuals to elevate the issue of independent public media and its critical role in civil society. We are particularly interested in combining the efforts and good thinking of the media makers with the work of media activists and reformers.

For more information and to RSVP, please contact Alyce Myatt , amyatt@nyc.rr.com ,
(212) 765-0193. Seating is limited, but we hope you are able to join us.

"The discovery of a new dish does more for the happiness of the  human race than the discovery of a new star."  - famous chef Brillat-Savarin.

The Cry

Hamptons Film Festival
Friday, October 21, 4:30 pm & Saturday, October 22, 10 pm

East Hamptons United Artists 2

Director/writer: Bernadine Santistevan

The Cry is a horror/thriller based on the legend of La Llorona—a Medea-like myth that has haunted Latinos throughout the Americas for more than 500 years, with currently more than 20 million believers in the U.S. alone.  This haunting story takes place over the course of one ominous day when this anguished spirit terrorizes New York City . As La Llorona escalates her appetite for vengeance, a young mother (Adriana Dominguez) comes under her spell and collides with two detectives (Christian Camargo, Carlos Leon), a Mexican witch/curandera (Miriam Colon) -- and the children whose lives La Llorona cuts short.

Evocative and suspenseful, The Cry brings to life the chilling supernatural legend of La Llorona, proving there is no rest for a mother who murders her child...and that La Llorona is real.

Bernadine Santistevan's debut feature is among six films in competition at the Hamptons Film Festival.  Tickets are available at the Hamptons Film Festival website.

See www.thecrythefilm.com for a trailer.

“Funny is Funny” Kicks Off
Production of Premiere Season

Sí TV to Showcase First All Latino Sketch Comedy Show

Los Angeles ( October 6, 2005 ) – Sí TV ,  America 's first English-language Latino network, kicks off production today of the premiere season of “Funny is Funny,” the first all-Latino sketch comedy show. Thirteen episodes of the show will be produced before a live studio audience at Sí TV studios. “Funny is Funny,” Sí TV’s first fully scripted show, is slated to premiere on the network in Spring 2006.

“It’s important for us to continue to discover new talent,” said Jeff Valdez, Sí TV’s chairman and co-founder. “For ‘Funny is Funny’ we’ve brought together a group of fresh talented actors to act in and write edgy, satirical sketches. I’m a true believer in exposing new talent, and these kids certainly have what it takes to be the next big thing.”

Executive Produced by Valdez; Edward R. Leon, Sí TV’s Senior Vice President of Production; Dean Crescenzi (“America’s Funniest Home Video”); and comedian/writer/producer Vic Dunlop, “Funny is Funny” exposes today’s fresh new faces of comedy as they combine cultural parodies with memorable reoccurring original characters to create a unique sketch comedy show that satirically addresses socio-political issues and cultural differences.

In addition to starring in the show, all the cast members are also writers on the show, developing sardonic skits such as: “Sister Joe,” a skit about a nun who lives in the Vatican and aspires to be the Pope, “The Big Fat Giant Gigante Show” which pokes fun at Univision’s sacred cow “Sabado Gigante,” and “Chola the Urban Explorer” which takes a look at life from the view point of a 15-year-old Hispanic girl living in the inner city.

Infused with fresh characters and thought-provoking wit, “Funny is Funny” delivers a new kind of sketch comedy for “Generation Sí.” The all-Latino cast is made up of seasoned comedians and stellar performers including, brothers Joaquin Garay III and Ricky Garay, Angela Malhotra, Jonisha Rios, Charles Sanchez, and Jose Sonera as well as featured comic performers Gabbriella Gatto, Angel “Ace” Guillen, and Adam Jacobo

CASTING LATINOS

SAG industrial
SAG industrial shoots in San Francisco within the week of October 24. Almost all of the roles are Latino or Latina but two are logically a bit more challenging than usual... In part this is due to their ages and in part it's due to the fact that SAG Industrials are not exactly the big money projects. This one at least promises additional pay for travel and supplemental internet use.

Breakdown:
ERNESTO, Male, Hispanic, 75-90: - Age 87 in the script. Speaks English with an Hispanic accent. Despite his age, he still has a sparkle and still lives alone. He does however have conditions common to folks that age. He's old school and has seen harder times than any of his kids. Boy does this need a wonderful actor with a kind but firm perspective and a loving sense of
humor. He'll be adding his own experience to the script. Good actor. Good person. The technology discussed in this piece revolves around his ability to be physically monitored in his home - the peace of mind knowing he's being looked out for - with out invasion to his privacy or independence.

ADRIANA, Female, Hispanic, 50-57: - Ernesto's daughter in law. Very close to her father in law. Very good actress. Very believable testimonial in her delivery. Think real person. Think documentary. Client would prefer no accent (Adriana is ideally an American born and raised gal of Hispanic descent); but that if someone great comes with a slight one, it would be silly not to consider them.
