Love And Sex; Short Film Takes On A Long Subject

Port Townsend , WA - Romance sizzles the silver screen when "Madam Marina," a 35 mm short film written, produced, and co-directed by NALIP member Katrina Elias opens for its World Premiere September 23-25 at the 6th Annual Port Townsend Film Festival.

Other notable film credits include co-director Gerald G. Massimei, cinematographer Blain Brown, and original music score by NALIP member Federico Chavez. Among the all Latino cast; Eliana Alexander, Yeni Alvarez, Jessica Diz and Miguel Caballero.

The film was adapted from an original one-act stage play entitled "Red Colombian Sky" written by Elias and produced by the 6th Annual Hispanic Playwright's Festival of Fort Worth in 2004. "The tightest script of the evening was Katrina Elias' Red Colombian Sky... Elias has done a nice job of getting a lot of solid context, passion, and conflict into a short script."--  Star-Telegram, Dallas-Fort-Worth.

Katrina Elias at the 2003 Imagen Foundation Gala for her 'Best Stage Play' nomination of "Abuelo's Legacy"

The story is a voyeur's view into the lives of an aged prostitute and young guerrilla soldier who are held prisoners in a war besieged Colombian village. The film embodies a Tennessee William's slant in which magic, fear and raw emotion drive the human spirit to salvation by virtue of a ticking bomb.

Katrina Elias is best known for writing the critically acclaimed comedy of errors, "Abuelo's Legacy" (Grandfather's Legacy) starring Liz Torres.

The 6th Annual Port Townsend Film Festival located 50 miles northwest of Seattle is on the tip of the Olympic Peninsula. The Victorian village was the film location of "An Officer and a Gentleman" starring Debra Winger, who will share the honor with husband Arliss Howard, in a special tribute following the screening of their 2001 "Big Bad Love" on Saturday night. Hosts and moderators include movie blogger Warren Etheredge, documentarian Ian Hinkle, Film critic Robert Horton and cinema instructor Dan Yezbeck.

For NALIP Members Alex Ferrari and Jorge Rodriguez, the BROKEN life…is the good life!

UPDATES:
- World Famous Film Critic Robert Ebert reviews BROKEN
- BROKEN goes International with Golden Lion Film Festival in Africa
- LA Short Film Festival - How the screening went
- BROKEN: Feature Film coming soon????

World Famous Film Critic Roger Ebert:

HOLY CRAP!!!! We just got back from the Toronto Film Festival promoting BROKEN. While we were there we ran into the legendary film critic Roger Ebert from the Chicago Suntimes & Ebert & Roper fame. Mr. Ebert is possibly the most powerful and influential film critic in the USA . We spoke for a few minutes, he then asked us if he could take our picture for his website and of course being the media whores we are, we agreed. He told us that he NEVER reviews short films, let alone an indie short that does not have major distribution.

Well, credit must go to Jorge. He continued to talk to him about our project and Mr. Ebert finally agreed to accept a copy of BROKEN on DVD. Not only did he keep true to his word but he watched BROKEN when he got back to the hotel that night and wrote a POSITIVE REVIEW for it on his website! (we are still trying to revive Jorge ; )

Check it out what Mr. Ebert (I love saying that ; ) had to say:

A festival like Toronto attracts hopeful filmmakers eager to pitch projects and find financing. Here, for example, are Alex Ferrari and Jorge Rodriguez, the director and producer of “Broken,” a 19-minute, $8,000 horror film containing, by their count, more than 100 visual effects.

“We’re here to talk about a development deal for a feature based on the short,” Rodriguez tells me, before the screening of “Twelve and Holding.” “Who you talking to?” I ask. “We’d better not say,” Ferrari says.

He gives me a DVD of their short: “We’ve already sold 1,000 copies online. It contains six commentary tracks and like three hours of information on how to shoot low-budget digital films and how to do the special effects. It’s like a training course.” They refer me to their web site, www.whatisbroken.com, and back at the hotel I view the film and visit the site.

The film is effective and professional and the ominous sound track works with the images to create the desired effect. Whether the plot quite rises above the level of “it was only a dream” I am not prepared to say. Whether the short will someday grow into a good film we will know only if the development deal goes through.

But that’s not really the point. The point is that gifted and ambitious young filmmakers can, with very little money, use the new digital technology to make a presentation that gets attention from industry pros. Kerry Conran’s “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” (2004) was floated the same way, with a home-made demo made on his Mac. Whether this is better than the old-fashioned method of submitting a screenplay is a good question; “Broken” is essentially a demonstration of the mastery of horror imagery and techniques. A screenplay has to also have dimensional characters (one, two or three dimensions, depending on its ambition) and a story. In an industry so impenetrable for newcomers, any way you break in is the right way. Then it depends on what you do. Looking forward to “Broken: The Feature.”

BROKEN - The Feature Film:
We went up to The Toronto Film Festival to speak to a very interested production company about making BROKEN into a feature film. They are very excited about the project and we are blessed and excited to be working with them on it. I can't say who it is we are working with just yet. (Sorry, legal stuff ; ) but we are on the path to making BROKEN into a feature film. Wish us luck and we will see where this path takes us. ; )

We are truly amazed and blessed by all the good wishes and support from everyone! We were sooooooo excited about all the cool stuff happening that we had to share the news. More to come soon. Check http://www.whatisbroken.com/press.html for the latest updates! Until next time...
