NALIP Members Alex Ferrari & Jorge Flores Rodriguez To Screen “Broken” Short at 2005 LAISFF (Friday, Sept. 9, 2005 @ 5:30pm)

B R O K E N -  A little short film that is redefining independent film.

Broken is a mystery, a thriller and an action movie, but more than anything, it's like a slice out of a big-budget Hollywood flick. Director Alex Ferrari and producer Jorge Rodriguez, a filmmaking duo that hails straight from Hollywood - Hollywood, Fla., that is - recently joined the wave of ultra-low-budget proto-Spielbergs with their amazing short film B R O K E N, an action/thriller complete with explosions, automatic weapons, and a stylish, neo-noir look.

This $8000 MiniDV short film has a pace that is feverish and unrelenting, and yet maintains a style that allows it to glisten through its foreboding darkness...the onus of the short is to deliver it’s over 100 skull-shattering array of visual effects shots that equals the quality of summer blockbuster.

The Story: A gun blast, a flash of light, and a young woman awakens to the comfort of her own bed. Bonnie Clayton has it all, a great relationship, a challenging career, and the burden of a dream that grows more vivid and disturbing with each passing night. But when Bonnie is abducted by a sadistic stranger and his colorful entourage, she discovers that the key to her survival lies within the familiar realms of her recurring dream.

Ferrari says the project was sparked by a viewing of famously cost-conscious action filmmaker Robert Rodriguez's Once Upon a Time in Mexico - "He's one of our main inspirations, and when I saw what he did with that film – a fairly low-budget action movie that looked as good as one much more expensive - and I said, 'I could do that.'" As the pair began to further develop Broken, they tailored it specifically to allow for the best-looking special effects they could design and afford. "Through the entire process I was already thinking about the visual effects," Ferrari says, "I was writing around visual effects that I knew we could do."

BROKEN has been getting a ton of press and festival attention. This little short has been reviewed by over 80 national and international film critics and has been accepted into over 13 international film festivals. Their website looks like something Universal Studios produced for one of their summer blockbusters (http://www.whatisbroken.com).

For now, though, the pair is looking forward to releasing their original short on a fully-loaded DVD, with 3 hours of behind-the-scenes material covering every aspect of the production. Rodriguez says the motivation behind the dvd's extensive informational sections is to inspire young filmmakers to follow in the Broken team's footsteps - "We wanted to show that if a couple guys like us can get out there and do it, you can do it, too. We don't reveal all of the secrets but we gave people enough so that hopefully they'll get motivated - we just want people to understand that this is within their realm." (http://www.whatisbroken.com/dvd.html)

B R O K E N will be at this year’s Los Angeles International Short Film Festival. SHOWTIME: Friday September 9th, at 5:30 PM in the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood , Theatre 13.  The Special Edition DVD will be on sale at the Festival screening at an event discount.  For directions and/or ticket info call: 323-851-9100 or go to: http://www.lashortsfest.com

"B R O K E N has all the visual potency of the likes of The Matrix and Fight
Club."
- FilmFocus UK

"Allow me to introduce you to the next big thing. ...the sweetest indie
trailer this side of the Matrix. They have single handedly taken indie to
the next level . This $8,000 dollar film looks as good as
Sin City .   -

when he was jamming with the Wachowski Brothers."

Public Media Caucus

Sunday, October 16, 2005
2:00pm to 5:00pm
California State University , Los Angeles
Music Building , Rm. 149
5151 State University Drive
Los Angeles , CA   90032-8111

The Center for Digital Democracy is holding a participatory caucus to outline what public media should be in the United States and how to make it so.  All of us are deeply concerned about the preservation of public media space.  Unlike efforts in other countries, the U.S. has lacked an open, deliberative process to determine our public media needs and how to effectively meet them.  The purpose of the caucus is to actively engage the independent media producing, distribution, activist, and funding community and those institutions that regularly use independent media such as libraries and museums in developing strategies and tactics to ensure a vibrant public media ecology.

The caucus will take place on Sunday, October 16, 2005, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at California State University, Los Angeles, Music Building, Rm. 149, 5151 State University Drive, Los Angeles, CA  90032-8111

The format of the caucus will include a panel whose participants will provide an overview of independent media including a brief history of media production, distribution, and activism, along with examples of new production and distribution paradigms that are proving successful in generating audiences and revenues.  This will be followed by a question and answer segment after which we will break into smaller working groups where the audience will participate in outlining public media needs and identifying strategies and tactics.  We will then reconvene as a whole, with the groups reporting-out their key points.  We will consolidate the information and determine specific action steps for moving forward.

This is third in a series of caucuses the Center for Digital Democracy will be conducting around the country.  (The first was held in San Francisco and the report can be found at http://www.democraticmedia.org/ddc/PublicMediaCaucus.php)

For more information and to RSVP, please contact Alyce Myatt, amyatt@nyc.rr.com, (212) 765-0193. Or, visit: http://www.democraticmedia.org/NPM/PMCLA.php

Seating is limited, but we hope you are able to join us.
