Call for Entries: New Screen TV— Aug. 1st, 2005

Dear NALIP Documentarians,

Hi, my name is Mark Astrom and I am President of New Screen Television. I wanted to use this forum in order to articulate how my station could be an incredible venue and provide unparalleled exposure for your films. If you read my message I know you will agree with me that New Screen TV is - and will continue to be - an invaluable venue for filmmakers.

At New Screen TV, we are firmly committed to showing and promoting independent and creative films 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Whether you are showcasing your first work, or you are a veteran with a veritable portfolio of films, you need to build a base of support and an audience for each individual film. In order to build a following, and to give your film the proper chance it needs to succeed, a few screenings at a local theatre might not be enough. New Screen offers you the ability to see if your film resonates with a large audience and to reach out to people that might never have otherwise seen your film. This translates into exposure and the potential for a following, fans, investors and DVD sales.

You may have never heard of New Screen Television. We have been quietly plugging away at the creation of this enterprise in our hometown of Orlando , Florida . We operate and broadcast via WRCF-TV Channel 29, but we are negotiating now for much greater distribution. This means future distribution via cable or satellite, which leads to greater audience size.

We are currently in the midst of our annual call for entries, and I wanted to extend a personal invitation to IDA members to submit their work. One of the great attributes of New Screen TV is that we have the ability to bring past films back to life. As stated before, up till this time many films haven't had enough opportunities to find their audience, and New Screen TV offers films a new lease on life. Your work may no longer be eligible for film festivals, but it is eligible for New Screen Television. The deadline for our call is August 1st.

This is an exciting time and we know this opportunity will generate questions. Please feel free to contact us by either email or phone. We will look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Mark Astrom
President and Founder
New Screen Television

‘14’

Jose Casas’ topical play delves into the thorny issues of race and immigration, specifically the clashes and interactions between the Latino community and the rule-setting Anglo society. The idea was taken from the deaths of 14 Mexican nationals who perished in the Arizona desert in May 2001. Drawing on material taken from interviews, Casas uses 15 monologues to paint a provocative portrait of the volatile dynamics of cultural assimilation. Some are too sparse to have an impact, but the bulk of the material here is well written and staged. The vignette about a wealthy Scottsdale woman who claims she "loves Mexicans" as she spits out venom about illegal immigrants is as familiar as it is disturbing. So is the tale of a Latino legislator who "made it," and vehemently denounces the benefits of bilingual education; and the white father, who soft-pedals his son’s involvement in an assault on two Latino youths. Director Jesus Reyes places his audience onstage in close proximity to the performers. This injects an intimacy that is augmented by assorted projector stills of Arizona .

LATINA MEDIA MOGUL CRISTINA CONTINUES TO EXPAND THE CASA CRISTINA BRAND WITH A NEW LICENSING DEAL WITH JR UNITED INDUSTRIES TO CREATE THE CASA CRISTINA BED AND BATH COLLECTION

Deal is the latest addition to the Casa Cristina Collections of Furniture, Rugs, Home Accents and Mattresses

MIAMI, FL (July 25, 2004) –- Cristina, Emmy Award-winning host of the top-rated Show de Cristina and one of the most influential figures in the Hispanic community, continues to expand her Casa Cristina brand with a new licensing agreement with J.R. United Industries, a Hispanic owned family business to create the Casa Cristina Bed and Bath Collection. The announcement was made by Salo Grosfeld, President of JR United Industries.

The new bed and bath collection will include sheets, pillowcases, comforters, duvets, bath towels and other soft goods. The collection marks the latest extension to the Casa Cristina brand, which already includes a furniture collection by Pulaski Furniture, home accents by CBK, rugs by Jaunty, Inc. and mattresses by Lady Americana.

“I’m delighted to be working with JR United,” says Cristina. “We have already started work on some very exciting bed and bath products to add to the growing Casa Cristina collections.”

“Cristina is a major personality in the Hispanic community,” says Grosfeld. “We are excited and anticipate great reactions from the public to her line of bed and bath products.”

J.R. United Industries joins Lady Americana, Pulaski, CBK and Jaunty, as the latest licensee to sign on to the Casa Cristina vision, based on the television personality’s personal style, her art collection and home décor. Cristina’s personal tastes range from the Euro-Mediterranean style to pre-Columbian and Afro-Cuban influences all combined for maximum warmth and comfort. All Casa Cristina licensees continue to cross-promote their collections, in order to give retailers and consumers a feel for the complimentary designs of furniture, rugs and home accents to complete a streamlined look in every room of the house.

“We are so excited and proud to be associated with Cristina and give a presence to our community in home furnishing as well as the opportunity to grow the business in a demographic that is 50% of the growth in the USA at 41.5 million which already today represents 15% of the population,” says Julio Grosfeld. Julio Grosfeld founded J.R. United Industries in 1968. Julio immigrated in 1961 from Havana Cuba after the Castro regime took away his lively hood and had to pick up with his wife Raquel and infant son and start from scratch in Miami .
