27 Film Schools , Non-Profit Orgs to Get $1 Mil in Grants
Beverly Hills, CA – July 20, 2005 – The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. marked its second year of donating more than $1 million in financial grants Wednesday at its annual installation luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel. NALIP received support for our Third Latino Producers Academy , which runs August 3-12 in Tucson , Arizona .
Those on hand to accept the donations for the 27 film schools and nonprofit organizations included Brad Pitt (on behalf of the Film Foundation), Kevin Bacon (Film Independent), America Ferrera (National Assn. of Latino Independent Producers), Ziyi Zhang (FilmAid Intl.) and Sally Field (Sundance Institute).
"We don't have to talk to each other about how important film is," Field said in accepting her org's $75,000, "how powerful it is on a world level for the human condition and human rights. To really stand in somebody else's shoes, to understand other cultures. This support that you have given us and continue to give us is so incredibly important."
Event also welcomed newly elected president of HFPA Philip Berk, who introduced officers and members of the board of directors. The HFPA, a nonprofit org that raises money through its Golden Globe Awards, has bestowed more than $5.5 million in grants during the past 11 years.
NALIP's Latino Producers Academy is also supported by The Walt Disney Company, Nielsen Media Research, Univision, Fox Broadcasting, POV, The Rockefeller Foundation, The Ford Foundation, Cox Communications, The Hanson Institute, POV/American Documentary, UCLA's Professional Certificate Program, Access Tucson and the University of Arizona 's Media ARts Department.
This year, twenty Fellows in film directing and producing, plus documentaries will attend the 10-day intensive. Crews of professionals, SAG actors and seasoned mentors will be on hand to assist the feature Fellows in producing and editing select scenes, while the documentary Fellows screen rough cuts to Documentary artists in residence and professional mentors. Dear NHEC Members, Supporters, and Educators:
The National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC) is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications from students to attend our upcoming 5th annual "Minority Youth Environmental Training Institute", to be held August 12-21, 2005 , in Glorieta , NM . The Institute is an intensive, hands-on, science-based 10 day program for talented teens, aged 16-18, selected competitively from across the country. Through a full scholarship, NHEC pays all costs for students accepted into the Institute. The application is posted on the NHEC website, at www.nheec.org.
As with our past Institutes, the 2005 Institute is being sponsored by a number of federal environmental agencies. Unfortunately, budget cuts this year at some agencies forced us to hold off announcing the Institute until NHEC received word that there would be sufficient funding from them to move ahead. However, we were recently informed that funding is available, so the Institute will be held!
Please forward this email on to those you think might be interested in the Institute, including other educators, counselors, and of course potential student applicants. We are also seeking volunteer role models to help our instructors train and inspire the students. We appreciate your help in forwarding on these materials to interested parties.
Feel free to contact NHEC -- either our Programs Coordinator, Juan Rodriguez, at jrodriguez@nheec.org, or myself if you have further questions.
Thank you.

Austin—NALIP member, Rupert Reyes, will once again present his heart-warming play, “Petra’s Pecado” in Austin, TX. This play returns due to popular demand and is produced by Reyes’ company Teatro Vivo.
“ Petra is a fun and meaningful play. It makes you laugh, cry, and think,” says Rupert Reyes, who in addition to being the playwright is also director and actor for this production. In addition to involving his wife, Jo Ann and his daughter, Anya, several local NALIP members have been instrumental in this production. Joe Basquez is sound designer, and Korina Flores, makes her acting debut. “I am usually the one behind the camera”, says Flores who works for the local UNIVISION affiliate as a producer. Miguel Alvarez directed the video footage included in this production and member Mariscela Mendez did publicity photos. This play is truly a NALIP “familia” production. TEATRO VIVO’S production of ‘Petra’s Pecado’ / (Petra’s Sin) marks the return of this hilarious and heart-warming bilingual play written and directed by local Austin playwright Ruperto Reyes Jr. It will take nothing short of a miracle to help Petra and her senior citizen friends in the small town of Las Flores, TX, to present the annual play about the Virgen de Guadalupe at the local church. Why did the new priest want her to direct the play as penance for her sin? Was Petra’s sin that big? No one knows, not even her husband. What they do know is that Tina Tamayo, Petra’s tortilla business rival, is out for revenge and will do anything to stop the senior citizens in their tracks. Will Tina succeed or will Petra and her friends overcome their fears and save a lot more than the play? Petra’s Pecado with its unique bilingual script beautifully blends language so that English and Spanish speaking audiences alike enjoy it. The richness of this play is evident in its unforgettable, charming and comical small town characters. The familiar folks of Las Flores prompted one Austin American Statesman writer to comment, Petra’s Pecado may become the “Greater Tuna” of Chicano regional theater.

The Women in Film Foundation has given writer-producer Rosie Vargas Goldberg the final push to complete her debut feature “Bloom.”
The foundation chose “Bloom,” formerly known as “Hopeless,” as one of nine projects nationwide to receive a Film Finishing Fund grant, an undisclosed amount paid for by General Motors.
Vargas Goldberg said the grant will cover the final HD master, DigiBeta screening tapes and festival submissions.

“It certainly helps,” she said. “The Women in Film Foundation thinks I'm doing something good. I guess I really am a filmmaker.”
The $120,000-$140,000 HD drama shot here last summer under the banner of Vargas Goldberg’s Whatever Films. It was her first foray into filmmaking after several years as a stay-at-home mom in Lincoln Park .
“When I decided to write this story about women who had touched my life, I surrounded myself with people who knew what they were doing,” Vargas Goldberg said.
“People were really willing to help,” she continued. “Everyone I asked helped as much as they could, giving me deals and advice and pointing me in the right direction. I don’t know how it would be in another city.”
Co-producer Diana Mucci-Beauchamp recruited Mexican commercial director Julio D. De Los Santos to helm “Bloom,” his first feature directing gig. Vargas Goldberg executive produced with her husband Benjamin Goldberg.
DP was Vladimir Van Maule. Steve Panning cut at Chicago HD. Patrick Yacono did sound at Signal Hill.
Jessi Perez stars in “Bloom” as a woman who, in order to regain custody of her children, must see a therapist (Mara Monserrat), who herself is struggling with infertility and caring for her dying mother, a Holocaust survivor (Greta DeBofsky).
The women help one another to overcome the obstacles in their very different lives and find new fulfillment. “It’s a women's story, no doubt,” Vargas Goldberg said.
She’s poised to begin submitting to festivals, including Chicago International and a number of Latino and Jewish fests.
Vargas Goldberg was co-producer of Mucci-Beauchamp’s play “I'm a Female&Seeking a Male,” which had a successful run at the Theater Building from January through May. “We were selling out by the end,” Vargas Goldberg said.
Prop Theater co-founder Stefan Brün directed the play for Mucci-Beauchamp's New Horizons Entertainment.
Vargas Goldberg is at work on three new screenplays: a psychological thriller which will be much more marketable than “Bloom;” a Mexican immigrant story; and an inner city coming of age story.
She hopes to start preproduction by this fall on the thriller, which has the working title “Herman.”

Death near the border
Ripe pertinence accompanies "14" in its Los Angeles premiere by East L.A. Rep at La Casa Del Mexicano. Playwright José Casas explores America 's white/Latino divide with a remarkable voice and evenhanded vision.
Inspired by the deaths of 14 Mexican nationals outside of Yuma , Ariz. , in 2001, "14" echoes the contours of Anna Deavere Smith's docudramas. Drawing from interviews, received accounts and his imagination, Casas presents 15 monologues in a crosshatched picture of uneasy coexistence.
There is the Scottsdale jewelry dealer who denies her prejudice while exhibiting it. An aspiring Hollywood actor defiantly Anglicizes his last name. His Mexican American government counterpart belittles immigrants who refuse to learn English. A Bosnian E.R. doctor in Tucson bemoans the extent of oppression, while a compassionate border patroller reveals his humanity.
Most astonishing are two Spanish-language monologues, delivered without translation. A domestic viewing the lavish homes from her patch of gravel and a day laborer haunting Home Depot in hopes of employment crystallize the communication gap beyond the power of polemic.
Director Jesus A. Reyes resourcefully places us on stage, overshadowed by Emmanuel Hernandez's projections, with a trashcan inscribed "agua" situated outside the barbed-wire fence at the apron. This instantly personalizes the situation, as do the brilliant actors. Brenda Banda, Juan E. Carrillo, Rainey K. Taylor and Seph Wise bring each character to vivid life in fearless proximity to their audience.
Casas brings up issues beyond immigration, and his compressed structure slightly impedes their impact. Still, though a longer format might benefit the big picture, the striking power of this heartfelt tract is undeniable.
