Latinos fete 'West,' Smits / 'Motorcycle' drives honors at kudofest
By ANNA MARIE DE LA FUENTE

Comedian George Lopez, a hero in the Latino community for fronting his own hit sitcom on ABC, dominated the 20th Imagen Awards gala Friday at the Beverly Hilton with his sometimes off-color jokes, but major kudos went to "The West Wing" for primetime series and to thesp Jimmy Smits for his portrayal of a Latino politician in the skein.

In the features category, Walter Salles' road movie "The Motorcycle Diaries" won a clutch of awards, including pic, director and supporting actor (Rodrigo de la Serna).

Actress nod went to Colombian thesp Catalina Sandino Moreno for her Oscar-nommed perf in "Maria Full of Grace."

"We (Latinos) have come a long, long way," declared Freddy Rodriguez, who has won Imagen's supporting TV actor award three years in a row for his portrayal of a funeral director in HBO's "Six Feet Under."

"We're not whining; we're here," said Smits, one of the small but growing number of Latinos who are snagging atypical roles in film and TV.

Argentina 's Mia Maestro won a supporting actress award for her perf as a secret agent in ABC's "Alias." There was no actor category this year because there were no contenders aside from Gael Garcia Bernal in "The Motorcycle Diaries."

Docu helmer Hector Galan, whose "Visiones: Latino Art & Culture" won TV docu series, urged audience members to write their congressional reps to protest pending cuts of public broadcasting coin.

Lawrence Bender accepted Imagen's Humanitarian Award along with helmer Luis Mandoki, scribe Oscar Torres and co-producer Alejandro Soberon Kuri for their harrowing pic "Innocent Voices," based on the childhood experience of Torres, who was among many 12- and 13-year-olds conscripted into the army in El Salvador .

Documentary Captures one man’s struggle to survive through music

Romántico is a feature-length documentary telling the story of Mexican musician Carmelo Muñiz Sánchez.  The film follows Carmelo as the troubadour returns home to Mexico after years of trying to make a living as a musician in San Francisco . Through his eyes, the viewer watches a migrant tale in reverse, as the film vividly captures why the 60-year-old first chose to leave his beloved family and cross the desert borderlands.

Along with his musical partner, Arturo Arias, Carmelo wanders through San Francisco restaurants and dives, playing love songs for tips.  Although they are a duo, they call themselves a trio for marketing purposes.  The rhythm of the film follows Carmelo and Arturo’s nocturnal life in the San Francisco Mission District.  They play songs of the old-fashioned romántica style, but these songs rarely represent romance in a blissful sense.  The romanticism of this music resides in its heightened melancholy, and the film captures Carmelo’s struggle to support his family through his songs of lost love and sadness. Through Carmelo’s music, Romantíco conveys the quest for happiness in the face of frustrated dreams.

When Carmelo receives news that his ailing mother has taken a turn for the worse, he decides to return to Mexico to take care of her. He arrives in Salvatierra and suddenly finds himself revisiting his past in an entirely new way.

Currently seeking 3 roles for short film

SOLEDAD GONZALEZ (LEAD ROLE):
Latina . Late 20’s to early 30’s. Fluent in both English and Spanish. Raised in the States as a child refugee. She's an accomplished Fine Arts photographer enjoying a successful career in San Francisco . Seemingly stable and strong, she is emotionally traumatized as a result of witnessing the violent death of her father at the hands of the Chilean military when she was eight. Her workaholic habits help her repress these traumatic memories and a sense of guilt that she carries. And although she is socially aloof, she is clever, elegant, delicate, intuitive, caring, and unpretentious.

ROBERT MARQUEZ (LEADING MAN):
Late 30’s to late 40’s, Latino, European or American. Soledad ’s manager. A father figure to Soledad, he is social, charismatic, attractive, well put together, deal maker, tactful, analytical, planner, realistic, steady, confident, natural leader; judgmental at times. Possibly her confident and vaguely aware of her psychological trauma, but he places their professional relationship over her private affairs. An art lover who knows what good art is and how to make money out of it. He reaches out to help Soledad and becomes her best ally.

BEATRIZ FLORES (SUPPORTING ROLE):
Latina . Mid to late 30’s. An elegant upper class Spanish speaking woman with Chilean accent. She is the daughter of a Colonel who has devoted her life to activism after learning that her own father is a perpetrator of human rights abuses. She is truly committed to justice even if her father must be prosecuted. Passionate, compassionate and outspoken, she sits as the chair of the Center of Missing Chileans in her native country of Chile . A quietly determined woman, she convinces a reluctant Soledad to return to Chile to solve the mystery surrounding her father.
