June 18

Script: Juanita’s Statue
Playwright: *Anne García-Romero
Director: *Juliette Carrillo

A modern adaptation of the Don Juan story told from a Latina 's perspective. In the city of a Spanglish speaking land, Juanita disguises herself as a man to escape the wrath of her lover Ignacio's father.  Masquerading as a "new" Don Juan, she careens through the city encountering Beatriz, a country bride, Alejandra, a diva-like painter and Tomas, a leather bar patron who all fall instantly in love with her. Her romp soon lands Juanita squarely at the feet of Don Juan himself as she struggles to find true love.

June 25

Script: Havana Bourgeois
Playwright: Carlos Lacámara
Director: Alex Fernandez

Presented in cooperation with DIJO PRODUCTIONS

Havana Bourgeois graphically portrays the deleterious effects of Castro's "revolution" from the unique perspective of a hard-driving, successful, "bourgeois" advertising agency. The apparent cohesiveness of the agency is uprooted by the internal debate over Castro's Cuba , and soon the agency itself experiences its own schisms and personal tragedies. The play especially resonates today and underscores how elite power struggles can destroy the lives of people who are simply striving to pursue success and happiness for themselves, their families and colleagues.

July 2

Script: Miss Chihuahua
Playwright: Alfonso Ramirez
Director: Katie Laris

Presented in cooperation with DIJO PRODUCTIONS

Two Latina women try to claim their own piece of the pie and accept who they are in mainstream American society. Included in this is Fanny’s recollection of an incident in 1963 when she auditioned for a co-starring role opposite Elvis Presley in "Fun In Acapulco" and was rejected for the darkness of her beauty by "The King" himself. Forty years—and three husbands later—Fanny has just moved into a doublewide trailer in the Mohawk Valley when her step-daughter, Melanie, shows up from Manhattan to try to convince Fanny to invest her last savings in a nefarious get-rich-quick scheme involving bovine hormones.  When a certain ghost shows up, all is set right.

July 9

Script: Secret Things
Playwright: *Elaine Romero
Director: *Juliette Carrillo

Delia, an ambitious journalist, returns to her native New Mexico to investigate an unexpected local story about Mexican-Americans claiming to have hidden Jewish roots. She’s on the outs with her editor/ex-boyfriend, and he wants her to say the story is a myth to save her job. Her encounter with Abel, an alluring Crypto-Jew, her estranged family, and her mysterious dreams keep pointing her inward to a surprising truth.

Nine Lives
Directed by: Rodrigo Garcia
USA/114 Minutes

A woman in prison desperate to speak to her daughter, a patient teenager acting as a go-between for her parents, a life thrown into confusion by an unexpected encounter in the grocery store—these are just a few of the remarkable stories of Nine Lives. Each of the film's separate but sometimes overlapping episodes is a small window into an emotional juncture in one woman's life, each one captured in real time and each in a single camera shot. Using precise detail to expose complex worlds within a matter of minutes, every sequence carefully reveals the circumstances that led each woman to this specific moment in time—often a decisive moment where she faces the consequences of decisions made or actions taken long ago.

This empathetic inquiry into the prisons we often help build for ourselves is meticulously calibrated. Xavier Perez Grobet's seamless camera weaves among the players, never sacrificing precision framing, and the film is a treasure trove of award-worthy performances from both lead and supporting players. Nine Lives firmly establishes director Rodrigo Garcia as a master chronicler of the intricacies of female lives.

Promedio Rojo
Directed by: Nicolás López
Chile/Spain/ 104 Minutes

With style and skill belying his 21 years, filmmaker Nicolás López struck box office gold in his native Chile with his feature debut, a teen angst comedy so outrageous and spot-on that its appeal spans the globe. Anyone who was ever a teenager will relate to (and laugh heartily over) this tale of a comic book geek and his outcast pals battling torturous bullies and raging hormones. In the grand tradition of John Hughes, Kevin Smith, and bodily fluid humor, Promedio Rojo (loosely translated as "failing average") hilariously hails López's cinematic coming of age.

Everyone Their Grain of Sand
Directed by: Beth Bird
Mexico/USA/ 87 Minutes

A small town's struggle for survival in the face of corporate greed powerfully demonstrates the downside of globalization and U.S.-Mexico border economics. Since 1988, Mexican community Maclovio Rojas has been fighting for education, electricity, and water owed them by their government, which would rather force thousands of residents off land that developers are drooling over. Community leaders are arrested, lingering in prison without due process, while their families and friends make every effort to obtain justice. Beth Bird's heartbreaking and intimate feature debut balances these hardships with glimpses of goodness—an elementary school graduation, holiday celebrations—to remind us what they're fighting for.

La Sierra
Directed by: Scott Dalton, Margaret Martinez
Colombia/USA/ 84 Minutes

The barrios of Medellín , Colombia are rife with gun-toting youths dying over drugs and territorial wars in a desperate struggle for money, security, and survival. Demonstrating awe-inspiring bravery, seasoned journalists Scott Dalton and Margarita Martinez spent a year dodging bullets to gain absolute trust from those living in La Sierra, allowing them to intimately depict what the residents go through on a daily basis. Without taking sides or reducing the scenario to abstract politics, La Sierra chronicles a tragic cycle of violence, loyalty, loss, and hope.

Mad Hot Ballroom
Directed by: Marilyn Agrelo
USA / 105 Minutes

Marilyn Agrelo and Amy Sewell's feature film debut about a group of New York City kids learning to ballroom dance explores the intricacies of growing up and the sweet, simple power of art to change lives. With a tremendous amount of intelligence, humor, and self-confidence, these young urbanites swing and rhumba their way from novice students to fierce competitors. Along the way, and with the unwavering support of their various teachers, these dynamic kids learn as much about growing up as they do about correct hand placement and the right time to shake a hip.

Maid in America
Directed by: Anayansi Prado
USA / 57 Minutes

Director Anayansi Prado chronicles the lives of three Latin American immigrant women who've left their own families behind to earn a living in Los Angeles , cleaning other people's homes and caring for other people's children. Despite different backgrounds and reasons behind their decisions to emigrate, the women share a determination to achieve economic stability for themselves and for those waiting back home. Giving voice to the over 100,000 domestic workers in Los Angeles, Prado's compelling documentary illuminates the personal stories behind the problematic statistics about illegal immigration and an American economy dependent upon this invisible work force.

One Out of Two
Directed by: Alejo Taube
Argentina / 88 Minutes

It's December 2001, the boiling point of Argentina 's economic crisis, and the impoverished residents of a small rural town watch transfixed as Buenos Aires erupts into bloody riots on the TV news. The only liquid capital around belongs to Martin, a hunky two-bit thug who swaggers in and out of the local cafes, courting the beautiful and self-possessed Pilar while imprudently passing out handfuls of cash to his panicked relatives. With its agile, gritty DV cinematography and compelling, verité-like performances, Alejo Taube's first feature offers a tense, meticulously observed snapshot of the human fallout of economic collapse.

Romántico
Directed by: Mark Becker
USA / 80 Minutes

Humble and determined, Carmelo peddles ballads for Mission District drinkers, his upbeat strumming belying the despondent lyrics that reconnect him with Mexico . After three years away from his home, the 57-year-old family man returns to Salvatierra to find his mother an amputee, his daughters silent, and his pillar of a wife beginning to crumble. Poverty is eroding the family's strength, forcing Carmelo to weigh the merits of another American abandonment. Engrossing, rhythmic, and distinctive, Mark Becker's intimate documentary binds audiences to a culture of men whose struggle for self-respect leaves them scapegoated, exploited, or ignored.

Mexican-American Natalia Almada returns to her home state of Sinaloa , Mexico to document how the tradition of corridos—ballads commemorating people, places, and events—reflects a crumbling economy. From Sinaloa to East L.A., musicians like the legendary Los Tigres del Norte, as well as struggling composers living in poverty, give voice to a new way of life for a burgeoning number of Mexicans north and south of the border. Fame and fortune are courted as songs are sung about tragedies resulting from illegal crossings and drug-related violence.

For Your Emmy Consideration

NALIP’sters,

Voting members of the Television Academy of Arts & Sciences have received their ballots for the first round elimination course for all submissions for this year’s Emmys due on June 22.  I am hereby requesting your vote (actors only), to be considered as a nominee for my (5) Guest Star appearances in Desperate Housewives as Juanita "Mama" Solis (as the mother-in-law from Hell) during the first season.  I must admit I had never thought about "throwing my hat into the ring" as they say, so I figured after all these years, "what the hell", what have I got to lose at this stage of the game.  So tell your fellow "voting members" to consider the "ole Ruca."

Gracias,

Lupe Ontiveros

The first thing comedian George Lopez says about the new kidney his wife, Ann, gave him in April is what you'd expect from a funnyman: a joke. ''This is a Chicano's worst nightmare,'' he quips in the voice of his cynical stand-up character, the hard-boiled barrio bad guy, ''Something that makes you owe your wife -- forever!'' .
