From Sinaloa to East L.A., musicians like the legendary Los Tigres del Norte, as well as struggling composers living in poverty, give voice to a new way of life for a burgeoning number of Mexicans north and south of the border. Fame and fortune are courted as songs are sung about tragedies resulting from illegal crossings and drug-related violence.}

Sir! No Sir!
Directed by: David Zeiger

Produced by: David Zeiger, *Evangeline Griego and Aaron Zarrow
USA / 86 Minutes

Students, doves, and hippies are the faces history gives to the Vietnam protestors, but it was the soldiers themselves who manned the front lines of dissension, argues this new documentary from Director David Zeiger. Bolstered by archival footage and incisive interviews, this smartly crafted, thought provoking documentary about the anti war movement within the military during the Vietnam War introduces men and women who sought justice but found themselves judged guilty of treason.

SCREENINGS

Everyone Their Grain of Sand
Directed by: *Beth Bird
Mexico/USA/ 87 Minutes

A small town's struggle for survival in the face of corporate greed powerfully demonstrates the downside of globalization and U.S.-Mexico border economics. Since 1988, Mexican community Maclovio Rojas has been fighting for education, electricity, and water owed them by their government, which would rather force thousands of residents off land that developers are drooling over. Community leaders are arrested, lingering in prison without due process, while their families and friends make every effort to obtain justice. Beth Bird's heartbreaking and intimate feature debut balances these hardships with glimpses of goodness-an elementary school graduation, holiday celebrations-to remind us what they're fighting for.

SCREENINGS

Thursday, June 23, 7:30 , Laemmle Sunset 5
Friday, June 24,
2:30 , DGA2

Maid in America
Directed by: *Anayansi Prado
USA/ 57 Minutes

Director Anayansi Prado chronicles the lives of three Latin American immigrant women who've left their own families behind to earn a living in Los Angeles, cleaning other people's homes and caring for other people's children. Despite different backgrounds and reasons behind their decisions to emigrate, the women share a determination to achieve economic stability for themselves and for those waiting back home. Giving voice to the over 100,000 domestic workers in Los Angeles, Prado's compelling documentary illuminates the personal stories behind the problematic statistics about illegal immigration and an American economy dependent upon this invisible work force.

SCREENINGS

Saturday, June 18, 11:00 am , DGA 2

La Sierra
Directed by: Scott Dalton and *Margarita Martinez

Colombia/USA/ 84 Minutes

The barrios of Medellín , Colombia are rife with gun-toting youths dying over drugs and territorial wars in a desperate struggle for money, security, and survival. Demonstrating awe-inspiring bravery, seasoned journalists Scott Dalton and Margarita Martinez spent a year dodging bullets to gain absolute trust from those living in La Sierra, allowing them to intimately depict what the residents go through on a daily basis. Without taking sides or reducing the scenario to abstract politics, La Sierra chronicles a tragic cycle of violence, loyalty, loss, and hope.

LOS ANGELES - June 13, 2005 - For Immediate Release - Winners of the prestigious WIF/GM Latina New Filmmaker Grant, announced in February by Women In Film (WIF) and its national presenting sponsor General Motors Corporation (GM), were revealed at WIF's 27th annual Crystal + Lucy Awards dinner gala, Friday, June 10, at the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel in California.

The WIF/GM Latina New Filmmaker Grant is to be awarded annually to five up-and-coming Latina filmmakers, providing them with a broad-based understanding of the business of filmmaking through a six-day, full-immersion mentoring program shepherded by members of WIF, which includes much of the industry's most successful female talent.

In front of a prominent entertainment industry gathering - including Sandra Bullock, Bruce Willis, Jamie Foxx and Debra Messing, to name a few - Latina actress Daisy Fuentes announced the grant's inaugural winners, including:

· *Yasmina Cádiz, Chicago, IL. - Co-founder of XChromosomeFilms.com in 2003, a film production company that promotes, supports and helps create opportunities for women in the entertainment industry.  Producer, writer and director of the short film MAMA SAID, a selection at six film festivals (including the upcoming New York International Latino Film Festival, July 26-31), Cádiz is currently at work on her next project, TWELVE SIGNS, based on 12  interwoven stories with an astrological theme.

· *Carmen C. Avila, Glendale, Calif. - In addition to her position as manager of production payroll in the television department of NBC/Universal, Avila was executive in charge of production for Disney/Touchstone's Mercenary II: Thick & Thin, a Robert Townsend project filmed in Mexico.  Avila 's film English Only, produced for Universal Television's The Hispanic Film Project, was selected from 1,500 entries to complete at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival.  She is currently developing a feature film based on the novel Albuquerque , by Rudolfo Anaya, who is known as the "Godfather" of Chicano literature.

· *Claudia A. Mercado, Los Angeles, Calif. - Founder of  Womyn Image Makers, Mercado - a substitute teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District - has served as a producer, director, cinematographer and editor on a variety of projects.  She is currently at work on her first documentary, Women Who Remember, about Chicana, Latina and Mexican women living in the U.S. who are embracing "indigenismo," urban Native American Latina culture.

· Carolina Pfister, New Orleans , La. - Having recently earned her masters degree from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee , where she also taught video workshops at inner city schools, Pfister is now living in New Orleans . She is currently editing Viva Viva, a documentary about three generations of punk rockers in São Paulo , Brazil .

· *Nicole Valdizan Sacker, Los Angeles, Calif. - A writer and filmmaker who has produced and/or directed 14 films, Sacker's work has been chosen as an official selection at 17 film festivals, with The Duel winning "Best Director" at the 2004 Boyle Heights Latina Independent Film Extravaganza. She is also serving as production coordinator on the horror film 7eventy-5ive and at work producing/directing a pilot for a TV sitcom, Living Together.

Commented Judith R. James, chairperson of the WIF/GM national committee, "These women were selected based on their enormous amount of talent and creativity. Our mission is to assist outstanding Latina women to successfully turn their aspirations into reality by providing them with a better understanding of the entertainment industry and the process of getting a film into production and distribution."

The five winners will be hosted by Women In Film and GM at the bi-annual International Summit of Women In Film in Los Angeles , Oct. 29 - Nov. 1.  They will also be provided with passes by WIF and GM to certain seminars and events at the American Film Market* (AFM), November 2 - 4 in Santa Monica , Calif.

Additionally, they will meet as a group with a panel of studio executives and distributors in film and television to discuss the trends and criteria shaping the industry. Further, they will meet with one or more international sales agents to discuss the current trends in buying and selling product for the international market.

Independents Night: La Sierra
Directed by Scott Dalton & *Margarita Martinez

More than 30,000 people have been killed over the last 10 years in Colombia 's bloody civil conflict, in which left-wing guerillas fight against the government and illegal right-wing paramilitary groups. As guerillas and paramilitaries seek to control marginal city neighborhoods, urban gangs align themselves with each side. In this way, the national conflict has been translated into a brutal turf war pitting adjacent barrios against each other. La Sierra explores life over the course of a year in one such barrio (La Sierra, in Medellin ), but rather than being a political expose or overview, it presents an intimate portrait of a neighborhood wracked by conflict through the prism of three young lives-told largely in their voices.

Well, it's time to see and hear me sing once more!!

I will be performing with the very excellent women of Vox Femina in Culver City , and Zipper Hall (downtown LA).  3 great nights, and this time it's all Musical Theatre and Opera!!!  I am especially excited for this concert, as I will be singing the most difficult solo in my career to date, Glitter and Be Gay, from Bernstein's Candide.  It would appear that I am becoming more and more a coloratura as I continue to grow up.  Repertoire has never been so challenging, but the satisfaction when you get it down. . there's nothing that compares.  It will be loads of fun, I get props, and it's about 6 minutes of me singing solo, so please come so your ears can ring with high notes!!

Following are the pertinent details, and there are TWO Adobe files attached, with the official flyer for both the Culver City performance, and the Zipper Hall concerts.  I know Culver City is closer for many people, but if you can make it to the Zipper concert, you will be rewarded with incredible acoustics.

(NALIP Chicago members Juan Lopez, Dalia Tapia and Juan Frausto)

Chicago Chapter of Independent Producers Group to Expand Latino Film Opportunities.

A dozen Latino filmmakers have set out to make Chicago a better place for their fellow Latinos to make movies.

Juan J. Lopez and his colleagues have launched the Chicago chapter of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP).

Founded in 1999 and boasting chapters in 11 cities, NALIP is dedicated to supporting Latinos working throughout the film industry. Lopez said NALIP will be a huge benefit to the Latino community, having an organization specifically geared to promoting the advancement of their films with a networking organization that stretches across the country.

"One of the biggest benefits will be making people aware of where the growth is within the industry, as well as getting the films we are making known and out there."

A Northwestern University alum who is director of project management at the Bank of Montreal, Lopez approached national NALIP executive director Kathryn Galan after seeing her on a financing panel at the 2004 Chicago Latino Film Festival. "I found it odd that there wasn't a Chicago chapter, since we have such a vibrant independent film community, and we also have a fairly heavy Latino population," Lopez said.
