Born and raised in East San Jose , one of Daniel Osorio’s pastimes as a teenager was cruising Santa Clara , King, and Story streets in San Jose , CA . “You find a lot of information about what’s going on in your city through cruising,” he says. Osorio credits the drag for teaching him how to communicate and, ultimately, for introducing him to his wife, Katrina Jasso-Osorio.
Together Daniel and Katrina formed a production company--just two years after Daniel graduated from SCU with a degree in Communications emphasizing video production. They launched their first film, Lowriding in Aztlan in March of 2004. The docu-video, which has been invited to several film festivals and screenings around the Bay Area, features footage from all over Northern California including San Jose , Monterey , Sacramento , Salinas , and Chico . Delving deep into the mysterious culture of low riding, the film addresses the common misconceptions and stereotypes about the sport.
Through interviews with a local airbrush artist and some of the world’s most influential lowriders, examples of police harassment caught on tape, and footage of a Cinco de Mayo celebration in San Jose, the film’s core message is that lowriding is not about being into drugs or gangs--it’s a pastime consisting of self-expression, hard work, and family tradition that can be positive for a community and a reflection of Mexican-American pride.
According to Osorio, the film accomplishes two things: educating society what lowriding is about, while educating the lowrider community that bad behavior is not okay. “The impact of that this video has had has been beyond my wildest expectations,” Osorio said. “That’s why this film is important. It’s bringing a lot of awareness--not just to Northern California , but across the US and internationally.”
Daniel and Katrina are also giving back to their community as part of their company’s mission. Aiming to encourage people from diverse and low-income backgrounds to strive for success, Jasso-Osorio Entertainment partnered with the SCU fraternity Sigma Lambda Beta in 2003 to create a mentorship program for East San Jose students attending Bellarmine College Preparatory, who may need assistance adjusting to the culture shock of private school.
Daniel, who doesn’t have a lowrider of his own just yet, is dreaming of the day he’ll fix up a 1964 Impala convertible with his two sons. But in the meantime, he’s currently in negotiations for a national distribution deal for Lowriding in Aztlan, is working with the Mexican Hertitage Plaza in San Jose on a lowriding event in the Fall of 2006, and is focusing on his next project--a lowriding drama set in San Jose . For more information on Daniel’s projects, go to www.lowridinginaztlan.com.

NALIP’sters,
I have some great news to share! “Lowriding in Aztlan” is now breaking into college campuses and their curriculums as well as inspiring never before grand scale lowriding exhibitions!
1) The film “Lowriding in Aztlan” will become a part of the Mexican-American Studies curriculum at San Jose State University ! This is big! Professors at SJSU will utilize this film to teach their classes about lowriding with real dialogue from true lowriding experts. Also, current SJSU students and faculty will have access to the “Lowriding in Aztlan” DVD, held at the campus IRC ( Instructional Resource Center ).
2) Also, check out the article below, it will be printed in the Santa Clara University Magazine in the August 2005 issue. Equally as big! This article about “Lowriding in Aztlan” will expose lowriding to a dominantly middle/upperclass student body and faculty, creating a powerful awareness of lowriding that most likely they would NEVER been exposed to in their lives! Special thanks to the Viejitos Car Club of Silicon Valley for supplying the 51’ Suburban. Check out the article and picture attached below.
3) And lastly, The Mexican Heritage Plaza, located in the heart of lowrider country, King Rd. and Alum Rock Ave. in San Jose , are planning to incorporate SHOWINGS, red carpet and all, of “Lowriding in Aztlan” into their very first “Lowrider Exhibition” event, the first of its kind in the country!
This is groundbreaking! The event is tentatively scheduled for the whole month of September or October 2006 but is already making noise.
We at Jasso-Osorio Entertainment are very proud to say that “Lowriding in Aztlan” has played a good part in making all these positive changes for lowriding, gaining a lot respect for what is truly a great Mexican-American artform!
I also want to thank everyone for their continued support, as now the true impact of “Lowriding in Aztlan” is finally being realized! Hopefully more great news will follow!
Thanks everyone and may God bless you all.

Critically-Acclaimed Reality Show Begins Production on Second Season, Moves Show to South Central Los Angeles
Los Angeles ( June 8, 2005 ) – As it kicks off production for the second season of “Urban Jungle 2: South Central,” Sí TV has issued a challenge to several conservative talk show hosts. In an ad in the June 8th issue of The Hollywood Reporter, Sí TV challenges Bill O’Reilly, Tucker Carlson, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, Lou Dobbs, and Pat Buchanan to spend one weekend in the “Urban Jungle” house, located in South Central Los Angeles.
“Urban Jungle” is a reality show that pushed the boundaries of the “reality” genre by transplanting a group of privileged suburban kids into the barrio to experience life as immigrants.
“It’s easy to take an anti-immigrant position from an ivory tower,” says Sí TV Co-founder and Chairman Jeff Valdez, who grew up in the housing projects of Pueblo, CO. “We want to give these journalists a chance to find out what it’s really like to live in the hood and see if they come out with an appreciation of immigrant issues and challenges.” “Urban Jungle 2: South Central” began taping this week on the alleged “mean streets” of South Central Los Angeles with a new batch of sheltered twenty-somethings and a whole new set of challenges plus a few surprises.
Returning producer Roni Menendez and camera crews will converge on the tiny two-bedroom, one-bath home to follow a new batch of 13 privileged suburbanites as they adapt to life as immigrants in South Central L.A., a predominantly Central American and African American neighborhood. For three weeks contestants will face harsh manual labor when they are forced to pick strawberries in the fields and compete against each other in a paleta (popsicle) selling contest, graffiti removal, selling oranges on freeway off ramps, and cleaning houses in Beverly Hills .
In the second season participants will not only take on labor intensive jobs but will be expected to volunteer their time working with children at the neighborhood community center. With the help of, Pete Esquivel, Monique Marvez, and Thea Vidal, three street-wise yet benevolent “Padrinos,” (Counselors) our contestants will try to adapt and survive in the “Urban Jungle” in a quest for the $50,000 in cash and prizes, and perhaps learn a thing or two about life on the other side of the tracks.
The new participants include:
--Georgie Donovan, 29, Winnetka , CA , the daughter of a wealthy South African family.
--Jeremy Darrah, 23 , Los Angeles , CA , an anti-war ex-Marine who doesn’t mince words when it comes to politics.
--Michael Shackelford, 28, San Antonio, TX , a conservative neat-freak who considers himself a metrosexual and has a hard time being around “minorities” even though he’s Filipino.
--Jason Lampley, 23, San Pedro, CA , a highly opinionated surfer and musician who has no patience for “stupid fake” people.
--Frances Leann Walls, 23, Springdale, AR , a small-town country girl who has never been exposed to city life.
--Vanessa Macias, 24, San Antonio , TX , a Texas princess with an attitude who works as a local TV personality.
--Aubrey Jangraw, 22, Woodside, NY , a social butterfly who has lived a sheltered life and spends summers at her family’s Italian villa.
--Mark Harley, 21, San Rafael , CA , a quintessential jock with a nose for politics.
--Kristi Swartz, 24, Burbank, CA , a tough-talking straight-shooter who loves to party.
--Tristan Robinson, Los Angeles , CA, 26 , an eccentric playboy clothing designer who lives on Los Angeles ’ west side.
--Erik Rivera, 23, New Rochelle, NY , a comedian of Puerto Rican heritage who has never been to the barrio and lives in suburbia with mom and dad.
--Afradet Zuri, Austin , 22, TX , a sexually experimental student of Middle-Eastern background who has likes to “tell it like it is.”
--Vanessa Van Vleck, 23, San Diego , CA , a controversial contestant from “Urban Jungle: Season One“ who returns for a second chance at the prize.

NALIP’sters,
Voting members of the Television Academy of Arts & Sciences have received their ballots for the first round elimination course for all submissions for this year’s Emmys due on June 22. I am hereby requesting your vote (actors only), to be considered as a nominee for my (5) Guest Star appearances in Desperate Housewives as Juanita "Mama" Solis (as the mother-in-law from Hell) during the first season. I must admit I had never thought about "throwing my hat into the ring" as they say, so I figured after all these years, "what the hell", what have I got to lose at this stage of the game. So tell your fellow "voting members" to consider the "ole Ruca."
Gracias,
Lupe Ontiveros

Review: 'Sharkboy' Lacks Originality
AP via Yahoo! News Thu, 09 Jun 2005 12:37 PM PDT
Robert Rodriguez has repeatedly proven himself as a filmmaker of infinite resourcefulness, serving as director, writer, cinematographer, editor, visual effects supervisor and sometimes even composing the score. But with his latest movie, "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D," he confirms what he cannot do: come up with a single original idea.
'Sharkboy' maker gives 'family film' new meaning
Reuters via Yahoo! News Thu, 09 Jun 2005 12:59 PM PDT
He said he never meant to do it, but when "Spy Kids" director Robert Rodriguez set out to make "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl 3-D" he gave new meaning to the term "family film."

WALKOUT
Chicano Productions, Inc.
We are looking for an extremely motivated, organized, committed member of the community who would like to spear head the recruitment of passionate members of the community to retell an important moment in Chicano history...the 1968 walkouts.
WALKOUT is the true story of Chicano students who decide to stage a peaceful walkout against the injustices of the public school system in the East Los Angeles High Schools. Tired of being treated as second class citizens in their own schools, the high schoolers, along with a group of politicized college students, take their future into their own hands, changing the education system for young Latinos forever. Set against the background of the civil rights movement of 1968, the year that defined youth protest around the world, this is a story of courage and the fight for justice and personal empowerment.
Walkout Productions is looking for an extras casting director who can reach out to the Los Angeles community and recruit hundreds of extras. We need someone who is extremely organized, can maintain a database, create a grassroots recruitment to community centers, unions, junior high schools, high schools, neighborhood environments, churches, local businesses, etc.
This position would provide an introductory education into the film industry. This is a management position. It's great for a person who was involved in the walkouts, has researched it or has had a member of their family involved or connected to that moment in history. We are looking for someone with skill and passion who can start immediately and work through the end of August.
Please fax your resume to (213) 534-3427 attention Shirley Davis.

CULVER CITY, CA 90232
STORY:
In a predominantly Chicano East L.A. high school in 1968, a charismatic, inspiring teacher, SAL CASTRO, galvanizes his students, particularly the bright, college-bound PAULA CHRISOSTOMO, to orchestrate a widely-publicized, five-school walkout when the students' demands for a better education are summarily dismissed by their principals and the School
Board...

SAL CASTRO: CAST
PAULA CHRISOSTOMO: CAST
--[BOBBY VERDUGO] 18 , Chicano, a stocky, good-natured boy, he's a senior at East L.A. 's Lincoln High School . The boyfriend of Paula's friend Yoli, he's bright, an average student with potential, and not too serious. Like the others who go to Sal Castro's Chicano Leadership Camp, Bobby is galvanized by the experience and becomes a vital part of the Chicano students' 5-school walkout. Initially uninterested in attempting to get accepted to college because he feels, "what's the point," by the end of his empowering experience with the walkouts, he's realized his own potential and been accepted to UCLA...LEAD (3)
-- [YOLI]18, Chicana, a high school senior, with an easy spirit and a great body, Yoli attracts guys like flies, but she's loyal to her longtime boyfriend Bobby. Paula's best friend, pretty, outgoing and bright, Yoli's not as driven as Paula, and has pretty much ruled out attempting to get into college. Yoli courageously joins Paula on the 5-school walkout, and winds up
proudly displaying her acceptance to Mt. St. Mary's college to Sal Castro...LEAD (2)
-- [FRANCIS CHRISOSTOMO] 35 to 40, Chicana, Paula's mother, she's a bright, compassionate woman who knows she has an exceptional daughter and is not afraid to stand up to her volatile husband, Panfilo, to make sure Paula gets the advantages offered her. Aware that her husband hasn't changed in the twenty years of her marriage, though she herself has, Francis urges Paula to make sure she can live with the decisions that she makes. Francis joins Paula in the walkout, proud and determined as her daughter...LEAD (10)
-- [PANFILO CHRISOSTOMO] 40 to 45, A hard working Filipino janitor with many kids, Panfilo is Paula's father. A complex man, angry but aware that he's got an exceptional daughter, he's torn between wanting the best for Paula and maintaining an age-old status quo. He gets so enraged at her involvement with the walkout that at one point he locks the door of the house against her. However, he has a surprising rapprochement with his daughter when she comes to beg his forgiveness for disobeying him...LEAD
-- [MOCTEZUMA "MOCTE" ESPARZA] 20, Chicano, serious with a smile, a natural leader, he's a former student of Sal's, now at UCLA. He's a seasoned activist and one of the counselors at the Chicano Leadership Camp weekend. Intelligent, personable and levelheaded, he's very knowledgeable and supportive of the high school students' attempts at grass-roots activism, feeding them encouragement and information without being too incendiary. A constant in the Chicano students' struggle to better their education, he is fearless and dependable in the cause...LEAD (19)
-- [VICKIE CASTRO] (No relation to Sal Castro) 22, Chicana, Vickie is good-natured, down-to-earth, slightly more "hippie" than the other counselors are at the Chicano Leadership Camp weekend. A bright, engaging, compassionate young woman with a sense of humor, she takes Paula under her wing and becomes a good friend, who takes Paula in when Panfilo kicks Paula out of the house. Vicki's a constant source of support and encouragement as she, too, participates in organization of the walkouts...LEAD (14)
-- [ROBERT AVILA] 18, Chicano, a high school student at East L.A.'s Wilson High, good-looking, smart, with a bit of James Dean in him, he hits it off with Paula immediately at the Chicano Leadership Camp weekend. A core member of the group of disgruntled Chicano students trying to make a difference, he's in charge of staging the walkout at his high school. Though he seems like a committed activist, Robert is in fact an undercover police officer, working as a mole to send information back to the LAPD and a city government interested in keeping the Chicano population complacent...LEAD (16)
-- [DAVID SANCHEZ] 20, Chicano, he's part of a "Community Service Organization working to improve conditions in the barrio" who meets Paula and Yoli at the Chicano Leadership Camp weekend. A sophisticated, committed and knowledgeable activist, he becomes involved with the Chicano students' planned walkout early on, and proves to be less hot-headed but just as committed as his colleague, Carlos Montez...LEAD (20)
-- [CARLOS MONTEZ] 22, Chicano, a serious looking young man in sunglasses and brown beret, he's a member of David Sanchez's "Young Citizens for Community Action" who meets Paula and Yoli at the Chicano Leadership Camp weekend. An activist with a real fire in his belly but no patience for diplomacy or planning, he's more hot-headed than either David or Mocte, and chafes under any restraint, but he's dedicated and fearless..LEAD (19)
-- [LLOYD HURLEY] 35 to 45, Caucasian, the crew-cut civics teacher at Lincoln High, he wants to be liked in his heart of hearts, but he's driven to following the rules--most of which are designed to keep the Hispanic kids down--and in his interactions with the kids he seems unreasonable and vaguely contemptuous. He doesn't share Sal's conviction that every kid deserves the chance to go to college if they can2..LEAD (6)
-- [HARRY GAMBOA] 16, Chicano high school student from Garfield High, he joins the others in their struggle to improve their education. He's an intelligent, aware, committed activist with his fellow students. -- [RICHARD "MANGAS" VIGIL] 23, This young Chicano man works with David Sanchez with their community action group, and he meets Paula and Yoli (whom he immediately has his eye on) at the Chicano Leadership Camp. He's a committed activist who joins the high school students in planning their walkouts, but he has a rowdy, sexual sense of humor that occasionally annoys everyone, particularly the girls. After the walkouts, Mangas is arrested, along with David Sanchez...16 lines, 8 scenes (20)
-- [MITA CUARON] 16, Chicano, this high school student is one of the kids at the Chicano Leadership Camp weekend. A stalwart activist and a student at East L.A.'s Garfield High, Mita is an intelligent, energetic walkout instigator there...17 lines, 8 scenes (27)
-- [FERNIE FLORES] 18, Chicano, a high school senior, he's a hot-headed but bright young man who resists Sal's invitation to come to the Chicano Leadership camp weekend and is basically kidnapped by Sal and taken there. A volatile, engaging guy, Fernie's a natural troublemaker, but he's got moxie and self-confidence. When he gets detention and is forced to do janitorial chores by Mr. Hurley, he becomes enraged and walks off the campus, thus ending his high school education...1 speech & 15 lines, 9 scenes (3)
-- [ORTIZ] 17, Chicano, an East L.A. high school student, he's one of the kids at the Chicano Leadership camp weekend who later becomes involved in the walkout. Brave and committed, he's one of the more impatient, hot-headed activists who doesn't want to wait for the School Board to get back to them, and who eagerly signs up for another walkout even after the violence of the first...7 lines, 6 scenes (26)
-- [TANYA MOUNT] 17, Chicana, a high school student at the Chicano Leadership Camp weekend, she becomes one of the principal activists in the walkout. A student at East L.A.'s Roosevelt High, Tanya is undismayed by the violence and pledges her school to another walkout...11 lines, 58 scenes (40)

-- [PRINCIPAL FRANK INGALS] 40 to 50, a tall and commanding, balding Caucasian man, he's the principal of Lincoln High School, who reads Paula's survey results and doesn't get that she's part of a mounting movement; he thinks she's crazy for rocking the boat she's done so well on. A man out of touch with (and probably disinterested in) the concerns of his students, Ingals later puts pressure on Paula to cease her demands or he will "pull her diploma"...6 speeches & 11 lines, 4 scenes (55)
-- [MR. PECK] 30 to 40, Caucasian, Lincoln High's gym teacher, he urges Paula to get her college applications in order, clearly impressed by her smarts and gumption. Mr. Peck is unfazed by Sal's zeal to get more Hispanic kids into college, protesting that he (and his colleagues) bend over backwards getting the talented ones in college, and the rest of them are getting "the education they need." Later, Mr. Peck joins Principal Ingals in pressuring Paula to drop the activism or lose her diploma...5 speeches & 14 lines, 3 scenes (33)
-- [CHANGO] 18, Chicano. Later, he gets in trouble with Mr. Hurley for relieving himself in the bushes outside the school during lunch--when the school
restrooms are locked up...12 lines, 3 scenes (6)
-- [DR. JULIAN NAVA] 35 to 45. The first Mexican-American ever elected to the School Board and a rising star in Chicano politics, he's a distinguished, educated man who clearly has sympathy for the Chicano students' cause when they come to be heard at the Board. However, he's fundamentally a political animal who doesn't want to make waves his first few months in office, and who can do nothing to make the uninterested Board take the kids seriously...1 speech & 11 lines, 2 scenes (62)
