SAG and NALIP Co-sponsor Table Reading for Latino Screenwriters and Performers in June

In October 2004, NALIP launched a prototype Rewrite Screenwriting Class to get six Los Angeles-area NALIP member screenwriters beyond their first draft. The participants were:

Erin Ploss Campoamor - La Americanita -- LPA 2004 Fellow
Rene Cruz - The Salted Earth -- LPA 2004 Fellow and LWL 2005 participant
Cristina Ibarra - Love & Monster Trucks -- LPA 2003 Fellow
Jimmy Mendiola - All the Young Dudes -- Latino Media Market participant
Horacio Rodriguez - Chile Piquîn --  LWL 2004 participant
Oskar Turuno - What Comes Out at Night -- LPA 2004 and LWL 2005 participant

Screenwriters met for weekly for approximately 12 weeks with professional screenwriter Bennett Cohen for intense exploration of character and story. Mr. Cohen helped chart a map for each writer to guide them in their rewrite journey. Once a week, each writer had their pages read and they received valuable hands-on notes, in class and via email. The goal was a completed next draft and subsequent table read so that the writers hear the fruits of their labor.

"The process of rewriting is never easy and often hard to define," says Mr. Cohen.  "But I found it to be tremendously rewarding to have the chance to work with such talented writers as the six who were involved in the NALIP Rewriting workshop.  Part of what made the process challenging was that all six screenplays were at different stages of development.  But the commitment shone by all six writers was impressive, as was their willingness to help each other in their work.  I am happy to say that all of the scripts worked on showed marked improvement and took significant steps forward in their development - a fact that I think is a testament to the effort of the group as a whole, and the hard work they all put into the workshop, which it was truly a pleasure to be part of."

The Screen Actors Guild Affirmative Action/Diversity Department enthusiastically came aboard to co-sponsor staged table readings of the completed rewrites.  The staged table readings provide an opportunity for Latino screenwriters to forge a relationship with SAG and Latino SAG actors. The readings will take place in June 2005 and are for the writers only.

The class was such a success that it is now a NALIP-LA program. The next Rewrite Screenplay Class will be scheduled for September 2005. If interested, please email Sonia Gonzalez at NALIPMemb@aol.com.

There is no more appropriate time than now to tell the riveting, incendiary story of the GI Antiwar Movement during the Vietnam War. Help us launch this crucial film into the world by spreading the word and attending the premiere.

In the 1960's an anti-war movement emerged that altered the course of history. This movement didn't take place on college campuses, but in barracks and on ships. It flourished in army stockades, navy brigs and in the dingy towns that surround military bases. It penetrated elite military colleges like West Point . And it spread throughout the battlefields of Vietnam . It was a movement no one expected, least of all those in it. Hundreds went to prison and thousands into exile. And by 1971 it had, in the words of one colonel, infested the entire armed services. Yet today few people know about the GI movement against the war in Vietnam .

With the use of stop action animation, using popular "pre-teen" dolls, Ariana's classic story of the dangers of gossip come to life in "The Truth About Gossip." Esmeralda has created "The Esmeralda Villalobos Show"--one part OPRAH and one part pre-teen comedy.  Esme hosts as 3 middle school archetypes get "makeovers."

BETH BIRD’S “EVERYONE THEIR GRAIN OF SAND” TO PREMIERE AT
THE LOS ANGELES FILM FESTIVAL JUNE 23 AND 24

Documentary Focuses on an Embattled Mexican Community's Inspiring Struggle for Survival in the Face of Globalization and Government Harassment

EVERYONE THEIR GRAIN OF SAND, the first feature-length documentary from internationally recognized filmmaker Beth Bird, will make its U.S. debut in competition at the Los Angeles Film Festival next month. The film screens at 7:30PM on Thursday, June 23 at Laemmle¹s Sunset 5 in West Hollywood and again at 2:30pm on Friday, June 24 at the Directors Guild of America.

In EVERYONE THEIR GRAIN OF SAND, Bird introduces audiences to the fiercely determined citizens of Maclovio Rojas, a low-income community just east of Tijuana , Mexico , whom the state government wants to evict from their land to make way for industrial development. Community members, most of whom earn subsistence wages working at local factories run by multinational
corporations, have banded together to struggle for self-determination and to create a better life for their children.  But as they face-off against a mind-numbingly bureaucratic and seemingly corrupt government, the citizens of Maclovio Rojas find themselves on the front lines of the battle for
global economic justice.

In an effort to drive residents out, the state of Baja California has failed to provide Maclovio Rojas with even the most basic services including water, electricity and a local elementary school. Undaunted, the community's resourceful residents make do by tapping into water and power lines and building a school using hand tools and garage doors recycled from U.S. homes.  But as the government escalates its war of attrition, even these self-sufficient acts are undermined, and the town¹s leaders persecuted.

One of those leaders is Hortensia Hernandez, who despite being jailed several times has continued to organize her community for seventeen years. A turning point in the film comes during the town¹s battle to get its new school recognized by the state, when the police break into Hernandez’ house to arrest her on dubious charges.  While she manages to escape and has been in hiding since December 2002, another community leader and grandmother, Nicolasa Ramos, is less fortunate: after being arrested on trumped-up charges, she was held without bail for two years and finally sentenced to six years in prison.

EVERYONE THEIR GRAIN OF SAND provides a rare glimpse of the human costs of economic globalization. Rather than being the engine for prosperity touted by multinational corporations and their political allies, so-called “free trade” has turned formerly agricultural communities like Maclovio Rojas into urban slums housing low-wage workers with no job security. Against this bleak backdrop, the resilience and communal spirit of the people of Maclovio Rojas is a beacon of hope and an inspirational reminder of the power of an organized citizenry.

More than just a chronicle of a political movement, EVERYONE THEIR GRAIN OF SAND is an intimate portrait of the families and individuals who make up this remarkable community. By developing close relationships with many of the residents of Maclovio Rojas over a four-year period, Bird is able to capture moments of humor, anger, frustration, fear, tenderness and joy in
their everyday lives.  The film is a compelling 90-minute journey filled with detailed character portraits and a dramatic storyline, taking us to a place which, while just a stone¹s throw from the U.S. border, seems a world apart; where centuries-old traditions co-exist with contemporary
technological and economic realities, and where human rights can never be taken for granted.

”I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to collaborate with the residents of Maclovio Rojas and document their struggles,” says Bird. “I was inspired by their resourcefulness and tenacity in the face of years of government harassment. Maclovio Rojas is a testament to the power of community organizing."

Producer, director, cinematographer, editor, and NALIP Member Beth Bird has been a documentary filmmaker for over fifteen years.  Devoted to making films that bring public attention to little known social issues, Bird’s previous documentaries include D2KLA, which focused on the clashes between the police and protestors outside the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, and LOVE KNOWS NO BORDERS, which examined discrimination against lesbians and gay men in U.S. immigration law.  Bird’s work has screened in festivals, museums and events around the world including Austria ’s Viennale (Vienna International Film Festival); InSITE 2005 in Tijuana , Mexico ; the Prague Biennale in the Czech Republic ; Berlin ’s Play Gallery; Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions and the UN International Conference on Women in Huairou , China .

Ferrera the Heart of the Sisterhood

(courtesy of www.LatinHeat.com)

Warner Bros. is counting on The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants to bring in the tweens and teens this opening weekend. The film, based on a novel by the same name was written by Ann Brashares already has a built in following. And based on the exit polls, Warner Bros. should do well with the Sisterhood this weekend.

The story revolves around four lifelong inseparable friends who are upset over the prospect of spending their first summer apart. As each goes off to a summer of discovery and revelations, their one bond is a pair of secondhand jeans they found in a thrift shop.

The film stars America Ferrera (Carmen Lowell), Alexis Bledel (Lena Kaligaris), Amber Tamblyn (Tabitha "Tibby" Tomko-Rollins), and Blake Lively (Bridget Vreeland) as the four friends who through the “magic” of the pants overcome fears, deal with family traumas and make emotional breakthroughs.

Arts & Enterprise Charter School Opens Sept. 2005

The Los Angeles Academy of Arts and Enterprise (LAAAE) will open in September 2005 in the downtown LA area.  We will enroll 150 sixth grade students and add a grade each year until we have a student body of approximately 800 students in grades six through twelve.  In addition to preparing our students for college, we want to dispel the myth of the “starving artist” and prove that with a solid business education, artists can achieve both personal and professional success.  Our students will have the academic knowledge, the arts training, and the business literacy to be successful industry professionals.  As founder Moctesuma Esparza, CEO of Maya Pictures and Maya Cinemas, says, “In 20 years, our graduates will be the arts and business leaders of Los Angeles .”

As a charter school, we receive state funding just like other public schools.  However, the state budget just isn’t enough to equip a school with all of the things it takes to provide a top-notch education.  That is why we are asking you to help.  The more funding we can raise from individuals—especially entertainment professionals like you—the more we will be able to stock our classrooms with the very best in resources.  With the right tools, our teachers will inspire our students to be great artists and entrepreneurs.  We are asking for your help to make this possibility a reality.  You can visit our website to learn more about our school.  If you’re ready to make a tax-deductible gift NOW, just click here.
