CALL FOR ENTRIES: “Film Versus Music” Contest

We are seeking entries for our first ever "Film Versus Music" ten minute film short contest starting on June 1st. Just as the name says, we want this film short contest to glorify the usage of music in film! It is our hope that this contest will help spread the benefit of musicians and filmmakers working together with a common goal, exposure. Usage of music in film can come from a wide range of film topics and genres, so we are not requiring a set theme to the film submissions.

The contest is open to any and all filmmakers worldwide. All films submitted in our contest are requested to use music from at least one independent musician. To support this need, filmmakers are recommended to use our "film seeking music" project listing service to locate their music needs. To date, we've assisted nearly 700 film projects worldwide with their music needs from our core database of musicians looking for exactly these types of opportunities.

Everyone Their Grain of Sand
Directed by: Beth Bird (NALIP Member)
Mexico/USA/ 87 Minutes

A small town's struggle for survival in the face of corporate greed powerfully demonstrates the downside of globalization and U.S.-Mexico border economics. Since 1988, Mexican community Maclovio Rojas has been fighting for education, electricity, and water owed them by their government, which would rather force thousands of residents off land that developers are drooling over. Community leaders are arrested, lingering in prison without due process, while their families and friends make every effort to obtain justice. Beth Bird's heartbreaking and intimate feature debut balances these hardships with glimpses of goodness-an elementary school graduation, holiday celebrations-to remind us what they're fighting for.

Maid in America
Directed by: Anayansi Prado (not pictured)
USA/ 57 Minutes

Director/NALIP Member, Anayansi Prado chronicles the lives of three Latin American immigrant women who've left their own families behind to earn a living in Los Angeles, cleaning other people's homes and caring for other people's children. Despite different backgrounds and reasons behind their decisions to emigrate, the women share a determination to achieve economic stability for themselves and for those waiting back home. Giving voice to the over 100,000 domestic workers in Los Angeles, Prado's compelling documentary illuminates the personal stories behind the problematic statistics about illegal immigration and an American economy dependent upon this invisible work force.

La Sierra
Directed by: Scott Dalton and Margarita Martinez (not pictured)

Colombia/USA/ 84 Minutes

The barrios of Medellín , Colombia are rife with gun-toting youths dying over drugs and territorial wars in a desperate struggle for money, security, and survival. Demonstrating awe-inspiring bravery, seasoned journalists Scott Dalton and (NALIP Member) Margarita Martinez spent a year dodging bullets to gain absolute trust from those living in La Sierra, allowing them to intimately depict what the residents go through on a daily basis. Without taking sides or reducing the scenario to abstract politics, La Sierra chronicles a tragic cycle of violence, loyalty, loss, and hope.

From Sinaloa to East L.A., musicians like the legendary Los Tigres del Norte, as well as struggling composers living in poverty, give voice to a new way of life for a burgeoning number of Mexicans north and south of the border. Fame and fortune are courted as songs are sung about tragedies resulting from illegal crossings and drug-related violence.

INVITATION FOR NALIP L.A.-- JUNE 4th Invitation
AUTONOMOUS PATHS: JOSÉ PARLA

BLK/MRKT is proud to welcome New York artist José Parla for his Los Angeles solo debut: June 4th - July 2nd, 2005

"Autonomous Paths" marks not only Parla's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, but also the first West Coast showing of his epic masterpiece, "Canal Street - Conversations With Rotella", recently on view at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York. The exhibition will open with an artist's reception on the evening of June 4th from 6-10pm .

José Parla's paintings are immediately powerful with a swaying rhythm and an unruly soulfulness that embraces rather than overwhelms; at once balanced and complex, both mysterious and deeply lyrical, abstract and intensely literal. His images occupy vast spaces filled with windswept clouds, commercial poster fragments, and remembered architecture while stylized calligraphic writings introduce grace and tension as a distinctly human gesture. Parla, who has already achieved notoriety, using the moniker Ease, with seminal art collectives like the Inkheads and Barnstormers, retreats to his studio to digest and reinterpret what he absorbs of this intricate miasma, bringing forth paintings infused with memory and experience.

Parla was awarded the Francis McCommon Scholarship to the Savannah College of Art & Design , Georgia in 1989 and has exhibited locally and internationally from Miami to Paris and Tokyo . His work is featured in the collections of Agnes B., Tom Ford, Katy Barker, and has been published in various publications such as Tokion, Refill, Booth Clibborn's 718 Brooklyn Style, Writing (Die- Gestalten) and most recently the current issue of La Rampa.
