CALL FOR ENTRIES 8th UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION FILM FESTIVAL (UNAFF)
(October 19-23, 2005) Stanford University celebrates the power of international documentary films and videos dealing with UN related issues: human rights, environmental survival, protection of refugees, famine, homelessness, racism, disease control, women's issues, children, universal education, war and peace.
The theme for UNAFF 2005 is: "A STATEMENT OF HOPE AND COURAGE"
Formats: 16mm and 35mm film; 1/2", Beta SP, DVD, PAL/NTSC.
Preview on 1/2" VHS (PAL/NTSC) and DVD (NTSC).
--All genres and lengths are eligible.
Entry fee: $25 for films up to 30 min. and $35 for films longer than 30 min.

NALIP Member Alonso F. Mayo’s film ”WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON” has been voted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as one of the National winning films in the 32nd Annual Student Academy Award™ competition. There are 3 winning films in the Narrative Category and the final placement of gold, silver or bronze medal awards will be announced on stage at the presentation ceremony. All the winning filmmakers will be invited by the Academy to participate in a week of industry-related and social activities, culminating in the awards ceremony held in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre on the evening of June 12th.
Through the Student Academy Awards™, the Academy recognizes and encourages this country's most promising new filmmakers. Past winners include Spike Lee, Bob Saget, Trey Parker, Patricia Cardoso and Oscar winners John Lasseter and Robert Zemeckis.

About “WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON”:
There is no right or wrong in the world that Miguel, an East L.A. teenager, and his father live in, only choices. One’s an American, the other an immigrant, and though they are father and son, they are separated by a culture that threatens to tear them apart. This Wednesday afternoon Miguel must make a decision that will haunt him for the rest of his life. He will be put in a situation no son should be in. His father made tough choices in pursuit of the American dream, now it’s Miguel’s turn.
”WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON” is an adaptation of the story LAZOS DE FAMILIA (Family Ties) by Bolivian novelist Edmundo Paz-Soldán, and was produced as a Graduate Thesis Film for the American Film Institute. “WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON” was shot in October 2003 on locations in Los Angeles , CA . It stars Jeff Licon (MYSTERIOUS SKIN, THE BROTHERS GARCIA) and Jose Yenque (TRAFFIC, THE BLUE DINER). “WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON” was written and directed by Alonso F. Mayo ( Peru ), produced by Beverley A. Gordon (USA), photographed by Paula Huidobro ( Mexico ) and edited by John Sitter (USA). The production design was by Laura Paddock and the music was composed by Christina Agamanolis, Mariana Bernoski and Willow Williamson, the trio otherwise known as THIS SIDE OF NORTH (formerly SIREN).
”WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON” has so far participated in over 25 international film festivals, including The Times bfi London Film Festival, Deauville Festival of American Film, Festival of New Latin-American Cinema (Havana Film Festival), Camerimage: Festival of the Art of Cinematography and Cleveland International Film Festival. It has won prizes in San Diego Latino Film Festival, Boston Latino Film Festival, Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee and received an Honorable Mention in the 2004 DGA Student Film Awards. “WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON” screened on Showtime Networks in October 2004 as part of its Latino Filmmakers Showcase and will screen in 2005 on SiTV and Canal+.

I'm working on a short this weekend and one of the actresses dropped out. We are looking to re-cast the part of a Latina actress, age range late 30's-mid 40's, fluent Spanish-speaking (preferably with a Central American accent), petite? She'd be working this Friday and Sunday. No pay, but it's for a short that will become a feature. The film is called "The Sins of Eve" and it's about a young woman's fight with her desire for the dark side of life. The actress would play the lead's mother.

VENICE ARTS: IN NEIGHBORHOODS is seeking a Volunteer Mentor to teach low-income youth the art and craft of Digital Filmmaking!
We are currently searching for engaging and enthusiastic filmmakers and video artists to mentor/coach our students and teach them the basic elements digital filmmaking. With small class sizes and low mentor-student ratios, our classes are the perfect opportunity for artists to make a meaningful impact on a young person’s life.
Venice Arts: In Neighborhoods is an innovative arts center that brings talented artists together with low-income young people to nurture their creativity, imagination and talent. Through our unique mentor-driven model, Venice Arts is a great opportunity for artists to connect and share their knowledge and gifts with youth of all ages.
Core Duties / Responsibilities:
• In conjunction with the Lead Mentor and other volunteer artists, lead and facilitate student discussion and critical analysis of their work.
• Teach the basics of digital filmmaking, including writing, planning, shooting, and editing.
• Prepare student work for end-of-session exhibit
Requirements:
• Commit to participating in the entire eight-week session, including orientation.
• Candidate must be proficient in Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Photoshop CS.
• Ability to implement media literacy into classroom discussion and exercises
• Familiar with basic elements of design (typography, layout, etc.)
• General understanding of the Mac OS X.
• Working knowledge of DV Cameras, sound design, DVD Studio Pro, documentary techniques and storyboarding is a plus.
• Most importantly, you must possess a passion for mentoring youth!
The Summer 2005 session starts Tuesday, July 5th, 2005 . Classes run one (1) day a week for 8 weeks.
