On March 31, 2005 The National Association of Latino Arts and Culture launched The NALAC Fund for the Arts (NFA), an inspiring and groundbreaking national grant program that will open doors for struggling Latino artists and arts organizations throughout the nation. The NALAC Fund for the Arts will provide grants to Latino working artists, ensembles, small and growing Latino arts & cultural organizations.
The NALAC Fund for the Arts addresses the needs of individual artists by providing professional development opportunities, fellowships and residency support and the most cherished gift, the means by which to see their creative process through to full fruition. NALAC Fund for the Arts also will address the needs of selected arts organizations to increase their infrastructure, assist in presenting original Latino works and to promote diverse programming in Latino communities.
The first of its kind, The NALAC Fund for the Arts is an investment in the creative and cultural assets of Latinos in the U.S. It is a first step toward establishing a permanent national fund to support Latino artistic innovation. But most importantly, it is a wellspring of hope for the future of Latino artists and the arts in Latino communities.
"An important part of the program's long term success is to develop a national Latino donor base to directly support Latino artists and organizations," says Maria Lopez De Leon, NALAC Executive Director. The NALAC FUND for the Arts is a two-year pilot program made possible with major support from the Ford Foundation. Artists and arts organization grants will range from $2,500 to $25,000.
All Latino artists, ensembles, and Latino non-profit arts and cultural organizations are eligible to apply. Guidelines and application forms are available on-line at: http://www.nalac.org/
The NALAC Fund for the Arts application deadline is June 10, 2005 and awards will be made in November 2005.
If you or your organization would like information on how you can contribute to The NALAC Fund for the Arts contact Maria Lopez De Leon, NALAC Executive Director at maria@nalac.org
The National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC) is dedicated to the preservation, development and promotion of the cultural and artistic expressions of the diverse Latino populations of the United States. Through this effort, NALAC is committed to continuing struggle for the elimination of racism, sexism, ageism and discrimination against gay, lesbian and physically challenged populations. The objective is to recognize and support the varied standards of excellence grounded in the aesthetics and traditions of our root cultures.

NALIP’sters,
Since being released in several California theatres last week, "Machuca" has received perfect (and we do mean perfect) reviews in its Los Angeles opening. Thank you to all those who have showed up in support of the film.
Additionally, "Machuca" is building a stronger audience in Los Angeles each day going forward and is on its way to being a real hit here in LA. ”Machuca” is still playing at the Fairfax , Encino Town Center and The Pasadena Playhouse. This coming weekend we have added an additional screen in LA, The Paseo Camarillo.
Thank you for supporting our film!
Neil Friedman

Santiago , Chile , 1973: Two 11-year-old boys from different sides of the tracks share the same classroom, but different perspectives on the impending coup against Allende. Gonzalo lives in a wealthy suburb, unaware of the growing resistance of his class to the socialist president; the more outgoing Machuca is one of many children inhabiting the city’s rough and tumble shantytown. When they become buddies, Machuca teaches Gonzalo to take advantage of the situation by selling nationalist banners to right-wing protesters and Communist banners to left-wing activists! But when the coup arrives they are affected in drastically dissimilar ways. “MACHUCA” is not just a political drama, but a poignant coming-of-age film, with perfectly pitched performances by the young actors, based on filmmaker Andrés Wood’s own childhood.

WALL STREET JOURNAL, APRIL 29th, 2005
By: Joe Morgenstern
TENDER, FUNNY, AND SMART, "Machuca" IS THAT RARE DISCOVERY, an incisive political parable that also succeeds as a drama of sharply drawn individuals. Andres Wood's elegantly crafted feature avoids the pitfalls of political cinema by telling its coming-of-age story on several richly detailed levels.
Mr. Wood gives us a vivid evocation of what it was like to live-as he did during his own childhood- amid a whirlwind of promise, then hope, then despair.

LOS ANGELES TIMES APRIL 29TH, 2005
By Kenneth Turan
"Machuca" is one of those special films that broadens and deepens as it goes on. Its story of how grave and painful the divisions in Chilean society were, and how those tensions affected the relationship between a pair of 11-year-old boys, will surprise you by how far it goes and how
troubling its outcome is.
No matter what your knowledge of the politics of the area, "Machuca's" honesty about the end of innocence and the gaining of experience will move you more than you anticipate.
Several factors make "Machuca" as involving as it is, starting with strong performances, especially by the actors playing the two boys.
Unusual for a film that is so strong on character, "Machuca" has an excellent visual sense that helps give its numerous demonstrations and action set pieces real veracity. And the fine
soundtrack, by Miguel Miranda and José Miguel Tobar, makes sure things stay lively.
The best thing about "Machuca," however, is its exceptionally balanced tone. There is no sense of special pleading about Wood's direction, no giving in to easy sentimentality. No matter where it goes, it gives you the sense that this is the way it must have been, and it is hard to ask for more than that.

LA WEEKLY PICK OF THE WEEK
April 28, 2005 (Ernest Hardy)
You don't need to know a thing about Chile's political history to be deeply moved by writer-director Andrés Wood's powerful remembrance (based on his own childhood) of the turbulent era in which President Salvador Allende was controversially overthrown, then committed suicide.
Wood delicately juxtaposes and balances the minutiae of Gonzalo's life (vain and spoiled mother,
ineffectual father, deceptively cushy home life) with greater social issues, essaying the film's political critique without didacticism or shrillness. He's helped immeasurably by his cast, especially Quer, whose solemn and knowing eyes reflect the host of tragedies to which he bears witness.
