THIRD NALIP LATINO WRITERS LAB™ OPENS
WITH EXPANDED FORMAT, WRITERS FROM SIX STATES

New York , NY ….NALIP welcomes 16 writers to the Third Latino Writers Lab™ this week, which begins on Wednesday night (5/4) with an orientation and in-class screening. Based again at venue sponsor Roger Smith Hotel in midtown Manhattan, NALIP’s professional panel selected writers from California, Florida, Texas, Arizona, New York and the commonwealth of Puerto Rico to attend this year’s 2-part program aimed at developing member writers and their works-in-progress.

“The projects reflect a full range of voices from our community,” comments Kathryn Galan, NALIP Executive Director. “Writers this year are working on culture clash comedies and thrillers, a number of family dramas in provocative settings, even an historical epic and a large scale fantasy adventure.”

The third year of NALIP’s Lab is again presented in association with the Writers Guild of America East, the program’s very first funder and visionary. NALIP also collaborates with local New York International Film Festival, following on its commitment to develop great Latino/a screenplays ready to be produced for screen and broadcast. NALIP’s philanthropic supporters make the program possible: the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. They also permit NALIP to offer hotel scholarships to some of the writers traveling to the Lab from around the country.

This year, the program expands to eight days: four days of intensive narrative skills development work March 4-8 in New York, and then a second four days of work on scene structure and rewriting after projects are developed over the summer. Curriculum is led by USC Masters instructor Ted Braun, who has developed similar professional writing programs for artists and producers in Europe . The second half takes place in Santa Monica , September 22-25 .

“Every writer receives intensive mentoring on their projects during the workshop afternoons,” explains NALIP Signature Programs Director Octavio Marin. “Our mentors include LPA instructor mentors like producer Chip Diggins and UCLA Masters instructor/CBS story analyst Harrison Reiner, and professional writers like Miguel Tejada-Flores (REVENGE OF THE NERDS) and Edward Pomerantz (CAUGHT).”

Lunches are dedicated to professional enrichment topics like “Legal Self Defense,” presented by NALIP-NY advisor Fernando Ramirez, “Adaptations” taught by WGAE member David Saperstein (COCOON), and “Working with the Guild,” led by WGAE counsel Scott Kardel and Assistant Counsel John Contrubis. Information on working with producers and executives will be presented by Open City Films VP Tory Tunnell, and NALIP BOD Member/Palm Pictures executive Jose Martinez.

Following is a full list of participating writers.

Help Save ‘The Latino Theater Company’ (LATC) —May 4th! ( Los Angeles , CA )

Dear Friends of LTC,

The Latino Theater Company has a vision to create a World-Class Theater Center downtown that reflects the population of Los Angeles . In other words, to create a theater where Diversity is NOT the exception, but the rule. For almost two years we have fought for that vision and now we need your help.

On May 4th at 10am the City Council of the City of Los Angeles will decide whether to give control of our home base, the Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC) to a downtown real estate developer, Tom Gilmore, or to consider giving control of the LATC to the Latino Theater Company and the Latino Museum of History, Art and Culture. We need to show the City Council that we have support for our vision. It is important to point out that our vision is inclusive and that we plan to reach out to all communities in Los Angeles . We have been granted $4 Million Dollars from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE) to renovate the long-neglected LATC building. We have partnered with the Latino Museum who brings an additional $4 Million Dollars to this new and exciting project.

Please come and show the City Council that we have your support and, if you can, wear white.

May 4th at 10:00AM - City Hall Council Chambers
200 North Spring Street , Room 303
Los Angeles , CA 90012
[Show Map]   [Get Driving Directions]

You will need a photo ID to enter City Hall

$5.00 parking at 2nd & Main (Across from the New Otani)

Many of you have attended our stage productions: (Luminarias, Dementia, La Virgen de Guadalupe, Dios Inantzin, NWC , LA Carmen) and have seen our work in film and television. You know we have dedicated ourselves to creating and supporting the theater for almost 20 years. We have been blessed by the support of our audience that has grown year after year and we thank you for that.

For those of you who have not yet attended our productions, we invite you to come and check it out! Our next performance is “Melancholia” by the LTC Lab on June 4 at LATC. And if you believe in our vision please show your support by showing up at City Hall on May 4th.

Sincerely,

Latino Theater Company

Looking for Experienced Producers ( San Antonio , TX )

Dear NALIP’sters

I grew up near San Antonio before attending UCLA Film School , where I recently graduated with the school's top award.  After playing in festivals around the world, my last film premiered on national PBS in December and was introduced by Susan Sarandon.  Now I've returned to Texas to make a feature film set in San Antonio and the surrounding rural areas. Here's a short description of the film: The lives of an aging undocumented worker, Jaime, and his young widowed daughter-in-law, Lupe, are thrown into upheaval.  Lupe is more of a daughter to Jaime than his own children, and the two try to stick together... but change is inevitable.

And here's a webpage that helps explain the film's themes and subtle tone:
http://www.chriseska.com/augustevening.htm

I'm specifically looking to find local producers (not fundraisers) who are like-minded.  I'd appreciate the opportunity to come and meet with your chapter to see if they find the project interesting.  If you know of anyone in particular, I would also appreciate you forwarding my info to them. Please don't hesitate to call or email.  This project aims to portray South Texans in a warm and authentic way, and I'd love to have the community's
support.

Sincerely,
Chris Eska
