Never before screened in San Diego and just recently released in New York & Los Angeles, the San Diego Latino Film Festival is proud to bring to local audiences New Yorker Film's quirky road-movie set in beautiful Patagonia that has won the hearts of countless film festival-goers worldwide. Near the provincial town of San Julian , three vibrant characters undertake seemingly mundane journeys that turn out to be subtly life changing. A lonely, fastidious traveling salesman quests for the perfect cream cake to win the widow of his dreams. A grizzly grandfather hitchhikes to town to find his forgotten lost dog and seek forgiveness. A poor young mother hopes to win the grand prize--a microprocessor--as a contestant on a TV game show. The gain may simply be the satisfaction of fully lived moments. In each case, the journey is the reward.

The Reel RasquacheHonors Celebration will take place at the Festival’s culmination, 6 p.m. on Sun. May 1, with the 2005 Tribute Film, Moctesuma Esparza’s rarely seen 1979 first feature producing effort, Only Once in a Lifetime, which depicts an inspiring and dramatic experience of immigration and cultural belonging.
The screening will be followed by a presentation honoring Moctesuma Esparza, the 2005 Career Achiever recipient, for his entertainment industry achievements that bring intelligence and depth to Latina/o characters and endow dignity to the portrayals of Latina/o communities. The Honor Ceremony will be hosted by acclaimed performance artist, Monica Palacios . Presenters include Si-TV chairman and co-founder, Jeff Valdez.
About the Festival
Director of Reel Rasquache 2005 - Festival of the U.S. Latino Experience in Film & Art, is Dr. John Ramirez, Cal State L.A. professor of Media Studies. According to Professor Ramirez, the festival “is organized to build bridges between East and West Los Angeles , between community and the University, and between U.S. Latino independents and the Hollywood Industry.” Adds Ramirez, “... the Festival is especially designed to involve the University’s neighboring communities of East Los Angeles and to bring a broad base of grassroots, professional and academic community members together with U.S. Latino film and video independents and industry representatives. This is the only festival of its kind and scope in the Southern California area dedicated to U.S. Latino films and videos.
The term rasquachismo, often used by Chicana/o scholars to define characteristics of Chicano/a cultural practices and identity, and a bicultural sensibility, defines the concept for Reel Rasquache. Amalia Mesa-Bains, a Chicana artist, writer, and educator, vividly describes rasquachismo in her essay, “Domesticana: The Sensibility of Chicana Rasquache”: “In rasquachismo, the irreverent and spontaneous are employed to make the most from the least... one has a stance that is both defiant and inventive. Aesthetic expression comes from discards, fragments, even recycled everyday materials... The capacity to hold life together with bits of string, old coffee cans, and broken mirrors in a dazzling gesture of aesthetic bravado is at the heart of rasquachismo.”

--This Friday, April 29--Don't miss it!
Santiago , Chile , 1973: Two 11-year-old boys from different sides of the tracks share the same classroom, but different perspectives on the impending coup against Allende. Gonzalo lives in a wealthy suburb, unaware of the growing resistance of his class to the socialist president; the more outgoing Machuca is one of many children inhabiting the city’s rough and tumble shantytown. When they become buddies, Machuca teaches Gonzalo to take advantage of the situation by selling nationalist banners to right-wing protesters and Communist banners to left-wing activists! But when the coup arrives they are affected in drastically dissimilar ways. MACHUCA is not just a political drama, but a poignant coming-of-age film, with perfectly pitched performances by the young actors, based on filmmaker Andrés Wood’s own childhood.

Mis queridísimos amigotes y amigotas:
Went ... looked at the calaca... le saque la lengua... and me vine de vuelta. There is nothing like having the threat of a potentially terminal-illness-guillotine-over-your-neck to rearrange your priorities in the proper order.
I want to believe that I have lived most of my adult life always with the awareness that anyone can drop dead at any given minute and that one should live his/her life to the maximum because of this, but nothing to bring it home so good as to being told that it actually can happen, truly and literally, any given minute and have the clinical proof of it in your hand (in my case a sobering and very scary plate of a CT Scan of my artery about tu burst open).
I can brag that more than rearranging the order of my priorities I have learned to increase the quality of them. To explain: I have, at least for many years now, been convinced that to offer my love to my daughters and wife, is my first and foremost priority, but even when this have been true for some years, now I know that I need to dedicate even more attention to it. Once you are sitting at a hospital waiting for someone to come and bring you in into the prep room before your procedure starts (a procedure that even when you have been reassured that has a good chance to succeed, you still know that you can come out of it like crap, if at all), every little second you can use to record their beautiful features and lovely laughter is invaluable and full of joy.
I have also, mostly always, believed on the power of love, friendship and positive thinking. But again, there is nothing to have in your hand the experience of their power. Even when it is to be expected, the support and love offered by your family is extremely comforting. The fact that my older brother immediately traveled from Mexico to be at the side of my wife and daughters while I was going through the procedure allowed me to face it with a much higher degree of peace, knowing that if something went wrong my family will not need to face it alone. Then, just minutes before I was to go into the operating room I found out that a cousin of mine and her husband, both very dear members of what I consider my closest relatives, were already driving in route from Nogales, Sonora to also be with my family. These demonstrations of love give you and incredible dose of tranquility to face whatever comes your way.
I have also believed, even when not always, in the afterlife and that in the other side of that border, there are your loved ones that have gone before you, looking down for you. I, probably in order to give myself courage, believe that the reason that the election of Pope Benedict XVI was made so quickly, was because Mi Viejita stormed into the Holy Spirit's office demanding from It to make up his mind because she needed It to pay full attention to my case. Knowing my Viejita, she would not settle with the help of la Guadalupana, Chuchito and the Big Boss only.
And then ... there are my friends... Even when you want to believe that you have worked hard and conscientiously in developing friendships and relationships and that you enjoy giving them more than you ever expect to get back, nothing than to be in a situation like mine to receive the greatest and most enjoyable gift, their love and care.
I was fully conscious while the doctors were messing around inside my head, (they need you awake for you to tell them if they are screwing up or not), once they had enough certainty, four hours later, that they could proceed as planned without making me more loco or pendejo that I already was, they knock me down and proceeded to fix the problem for good. After the operation and once I was moved into the ICU room, I was coming in and out of conscience for the rest of the day, each time waking up to new company on my cubicle. My daughters and wife first, then my bro and sis-in-law, then my cousin and her hubby and then... surprise! Danny Rodriguez and Robert Parada, producers of THE DEVIL INSIDE. Why this is significant for me? I have know Danny and Robert for just short four years, during that time I have enjoyed partying and working with them, but also I have enjoyed sharing support and help with them several times in difficult times and long and behold, first non-relative faces I see... that of dear and beloved friends who lost no time in making me laugh. Yes, with stupid and crude jokes, but that served wonders in cheering my spirits at an instant.
Later, when I was moved to a "regular" room, I arrived at it to find a plethora of cards, flowers and fruit baskets sent with their good wishes by many of my dearest friends, also with a litany of names listed by my wife of friends that have called wishing me the best. Next day while still dosing in and out, I woke to find even more friends at my side, Alex Cortez and Loree Campos, David DeLeon, etc.
A couple of days later I was able to get back home, and in another two or three days after, that I started regaining my feet and was able to start reading, I checked my e-mail in-box and I realized that I had more than 200 messages of people wishing me well (I am still feeling el cuero chinito from that moment). Many of them from people that I haven't ever met personally. That did wonders because after reading each one of them my spirits were so high that the doctors were even willing to replace the very potent pain killers prescribed for the very strong headaches I was getting (y que me tenían todo apendejado), for over-the-counter Motrin pills (I demanded to replace them for tequila, but that didn’t work). And since then I haven't needed them again. I am truly and forever grateful to all of you for your prayers and good wishes (I heard rumors that the Heaven Security Agency, that intercepts all earthly communications checking for people praying, was overwhelmed by the outpouring of requests on behalf of the well being of this your humble servidor) They all worked to the max, since as you can all read now, I'm back, even when few hours at the time, ready to do my travesuras again. Yes, all your "Hierba Mala..." and "Not another Day without a Mexican..." notes were so successful that today I feel stronger and more enthused about life than I have ever felt before. Gracias a tochos!
Oh, and for those that have asked, yes, the doctors were willing to repair all those things that my wife asked for since they were going to be on the neighborhood, but since the insurance didn’t agree to pay for them, and they were so many (even requiring a major lobotomy and brain transplant), that she couldn’t afford to pay for them, so… sorry, she and all the world will need to keep been patient with me, con toditas mis faltas, ni modos!
I am still following the advice of many of you to take it easy, so, please, keep sending your postings to Jose Murillo (Muy especiales gracias a ti, mi hermano, por todo tu amor y apoyo) until further notice. Like now, I’m getting a little tired of focusing on the computer screen so I’m going for my Siesta.
Alexito, el renacidito.
