Playwrights Foundation continues its 2005 In the Rough series with a staged reading of a new play Like Heaven by Elaine Romero, May 10, at the Magic Theatre, 7:30 pm. Rekindling her ties to the Bay area – as an alumna of Bay Area Playwrights Festival and UC Davis graduate – the nationally celebrated Latina playwright, will also participate in the Foundation’s traditional discussion with audience following the reading
As a compelling departure from Romero’s other plays, Like Heaven is a comedy focusing on the lives of four women in a Midwestern town. The town beauty, April, a wannabe blues singer, has packed her bags for California and is ready to leave her staid life in Independence , Kansas . When her steady sister Callie interrupts her escape, she finds herself drawn into a Sunday brunch where she encounters the alluring outsider Sapphire, a free-loving freethinking woman from California with 60 days clean and sober, her sister’s fundamentalist best friend whose brother has disappeared without a trace, and the shocking truth about her husband. The stage reading is directed by Amy Mueller, Artistic Director of Playwrights Foundation.

Dear NALIP Members,
We cordially invite you to AUTONOMOUS PATHS; Jose Parla’s first exhibition in Los Angeles , California on Saturday June 4th at 6 p.m. “Autonomous Paths” marks not only Parla’s first debut in Los Angeles, but also the first West Coast showing of his epic masterpiece, “Canal Street - Conversations With Rotella”, recently on view at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York. The exhibition will open with an artist’s reception on the evening of June 4th from 6-10 p.m. José Parla’s paintings are immediately powerful with a swaying rhythm and an unruly soulfulness that embraces rather than overwhelms; at once balanced and complex, both mysterious and deeply lyrical, abstract and intensely literal. Parla was awarded the Francis McCommon Scholarship to the Savannah College of Art & Design , Georgia in 1989 and has exhibited locally and internationally from Miami to Paris and Tokyo . His work is featured in the collections of Agnes B., Tom Ford, Katy Barker, and has been published in various publications such as Tokion, Refill, Booth Clibborn’s 718 Brooklyn Style, Writing (Die- Gestalten) and most recently the current issue of La Rampa. Video pieces by Jose Parla and Patrick Burns will be showcased. In addition, film and video work by our own very NALIP ( Florida ) memberRey Parla will highlight the evening.

I am hunting for what is probably the first major documentary on migrant and other farm workers, ""Poverty in the Land of Plenty ." Made in 1948 by the Hollywood Film Council (AFL) and others, it was used as an organizing tool until DiGiorgio Farms successfully sued its distributors for libel and effectively silenced the film. A full history is in Ernesto Galarza's book "Spiders in the House and Workers in the Field" (1970). Anybody see it?
Knows where a copy may be located?
Thanks--Tom Zaniello

An Interview with Frances Negrón-Muntaner
(courtesy of www.mediaartists.org)
Frances Negrón-Muntaner-- 1997 Fellow ( New York , NY )
Artist Statement: A stereotype's obscenity does not lie in its falsity, but in its authorized predictability. Still, the Other is never where you think she is.
— Frances Negrón-Muntaner
How do you approach the beginning of a project?
I don't approach projects, they approach me. Then it's like falling in love with a difficult person. You know it will be tough but you can't help it.
What is your greatest fear when you face a project?
My greatest fear when I begin a creative project is that it will never be completed.
What is your daily creative work schedule?
Insane. I work virtually every day, about ten hours a day.
What is the one question you have never been asked regarding your creative process?
Wouldn't you rather be fishing? (Answer: No).
What would you be if you couldn't be a filmmaker/ artist/ writer/ multimedia/ installationist?
A general in a revolutionary army.
What do you do when you get stuck?
Reach out and call someone.
What was the most discouraging feedback you ever got and what was its aftermath?
Nothing really stands out. But when I receive any harsh critique I am like a village hit by a hurricane: Devastation, reconstruction and renewal.
What was the most encouraging feedback you ever got and what was its aftermath?
My parents saying that I was a "real" filmmaker.
Is having a community of artists a beneficial component to your work?
Yes. But my work is also influenced by intellectuals and political activists.
Have you (ever) transitioned to another medium or genre? What was the impetus and experience and how did it affect your original discipline?
I don't really have an "original" genre. They're all copies.
What is some advice to those starting out in the visual arts field?
Stay in shape. Filmmaking is a long distance race.

Hola!
I'm looking for a sound designer/mixer to replace a temp sound track for my film “Madam Marina” (shot in 35MM) before it goes to World Premiere.
Picture is locked. (19 minutes).
The sound mix is about the war; bombs, guns, and hysterical community outside my hostages walls. There is pay, but more for the sound designer interested in a solid Festival run. Pass this along.
Thanks,
Warmest Regards,
