Following the Voz Box Interview by Tony Plana with Dennis Leoni, a selection of shorts by NALIP filmmakers will be presenting a screening of their selected works. Please come out and support these wonderful up and coming directors/writers and NALIP Members: Iris Almaraz, Rina Fernandez, and Corina Mora (Jayson), Carla Gutierrez (Time Lost), and Iris Almaraz (La Puta) as they showcase their latest shorts for all to see. The screenings begin at 9PM .

Flix #1-- “Jayson”
Synopsis: In Jayson, Arleen Lopez shows us life through the eyes of a child. Jason's parents are so lost in their continual struggle that they have lost sight of the damage it is inflicting upon him. The film begins on an optimistic tone with Jason (Jared LeBaron) enjoying an intimate moment with his mother, Emma (Rina Fernandez). The mood is quickly broken to reflect the tension that exists in the house. From there, we meet Tony (Ryan Quintana), the husband and father, who comes home from work to play out yet another terrible incident with his wife. The resulting violence becomes the final straw that finally motivates Emma to take the action to save herself and her son.
Bella Donna Films:
Iris Almaraz, Rina Fernandez, Corina Mora are guerrilla filmmakers writing, directing, producing, acting in and editing their own films. Jayson is the second of a series of eight shorts being created by Bella Donna Films in 2004; four of which are being submitted to this film festival. Not only are they able to create a large quantity of films, but they are equally concerned with the sincerity of their stories and quality of their production value. Putting more of a women's touch into their shorts, they have created a refreshing and unique style that is easy to appreciate.

Flix #2— “Time Lost”
Synopsis: Albert Johnson's baby girl was just over a month-old when he was arrested and charged with two counts of rape. After 11 years in prison a DNA test exonerated him from one of the two charges. Time Lost delves into Albert's story as he attempts to reconnect with his teenaged children whose childhood he missed. Albert's story sheds light to the larger workings of our police and justice system. If DNA proves innocence in a black and white, what happens when the results are gray?
“TIME LOST” Short Film: 18 min.
If DNA proves innocence in a black and white world, what happens when the results are gray?

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS
Princess Grace Award Recipient, 2003

Flix#3— “La Puta”
Synopsis: Gaby is growing up much too fast and struggling to find her identity. Her trials are beyond her self-indulgent mother's ability to cope with. Luckily for her, the local town whore (La Puta) has a heart of gold and is doing her best to help the girl out by giving her some much needed advice on dealing with overly anxious boys and mother's with hardships beyond their daughter's comprehension. Meanwhile, Chencha (Gaby's mother) is so wrapped up in finding her dark knight that Gaby takes the role of mother and Chencha becomes the irresponsible daughter. "La Puta" is the story of three women who, like the town they live in, are stuck in between opposing streams of life.
Note from Iris Almaraz - Writer/Director
I learned much about the art of filmmaking while working as a waitress at the world famous International House of Pancakes (IHOP), mostly on the weekends, when she WAS NOT serving short stacks or funny faces. Iris has been the dictator who worked for twenty hours a day whipping her stable of slaves into filming and editing what is now "La Puta". However, the sweatshop conditions were not enough to deter the humbled servants who anxiously fulfilled their duty for a mere smile and a cerveza at the end of each day.

NALIP’sters,
I am looking for producers or philanthropists interested in investing in a project on human rights abuses in Colombia through the medium of film. This feature length documentary will be an exploration on how this internal conflict, including the war on drugs, has affected the rich culture and everyday life in Colombia .
I have a talented Colombian crew, famous scholar consultants, and Edward James Olmos as my consulting producer. My short film on human rights abuses through the eyes of a displaced Afro-Colombiano who hid in a river for three days while the paramilitaries and Colombian army slaughtered nearly everyone in his village premiered in the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival presented by Edward James Olmos. My film was honored with a Showtime Award nomination. I also have fiscal sponsors, the Center for Independent Documentary. They have 501 (c) non-profit status which will make your contributions to the project tax deductible should you decide to help with financing. Remember, April 15th is just around the corner. Please visit my website for further information: www.venturafilms.com
Thank you in advance for your time.

NALIP would like to congratulate members Katrina Cabrera Ortega and Benjamin Lobato on being chosen by NALIP as the two screenwriting finalists nominated to ABC's Talent Development Scholarship Grant Program.
Chosen from a competitive field of member entries, these two writers' projects are forwarded into the competition that grants $20,000 to support development and completion of polished work for fresh and emerging voices. After Giselle Covarrubias falls on hard times, she convinces four fellow mommies they could use their collective talents to rob the iconic diamond shop and free themselves from financial problems.
Ben's "The Last Telenovela Star" is about Juliette, a telenovela junky who dreams of being whisked away by a handsome rebel on a white horse. When Rolando, an Average-Joe construction worker, rescues her from a grocery store brawl on the back of a donkey, she figures "close enough" and marries him. But ten years and two unruly sons later, Juliette has become a desperate housewife, so when Rolando takes her to a midget-wrestling match on their tenth anniversary, Juliette decides she's had enough and runs off to Mexico to become a telenovela star.

A native of California 's San Joaquin Valley , Katrina Cabrera Ortega graduated from UCLA with a B.A. in English Literature in 1993.
