ShortFLIX Films Announced for April 12th @ Cinespace Location ( Hollywood , CA )

Following the Voz Box Interview with Dennis Leoni, a selection of shorts by NALIP filmmakers will be presented. Please come out and support these wonderful up and coming directors/writers and NALIP Members: Iris Almaraz, Rina Fernandez, and Corina Mora (Jayson), Carla Gutierrez (Time Lost), and Iris Almaraz (La Puta) as they showcase their latest shorts for all to see. The screenings begin at 9PM .

Flix #1-- “Jayson”

In Jayson, Arleen Lopez shows us life through the eyes of a child. Jason's parents are so lost in their continual struggle that they have lost sight of the damage it is inflicting upon him. The film begins on an optimistic tone with Jason (Jared LeBaron) enjoying an intimate moment with his mother, Emma (Rina Fernandez).

The mood is quickly broken to reflect the tension that exists in the house. From there, we meet Tony (Ryan Quintana), the husband and father, who comes home from work to play out yet another terrible incident with his wife. The resulting violence becomes the final straw that finally motivates Emma to take the action to save herself and her son.

Bella Donna Films:
Iris Almaraz, Rina Fernandez, Corina Mora are guerrilla filmmakers writing, directing, producing, acting in and editing their own films. Jayson is the second of a series of eight shorts being created by Bella Donna Films in 2004; four of which are are being submitted to this film festival. Not only are they able to create a large quantity of films, but they are equally concerned with the sincerity of their stories and quality of their production value. Putting more of a women's touch into their shorts, they have created a refreshing and unique style that is easy to appreciate.

Note:
"Jayson" was shot in the director’s grandma's housing in East Los Angeles in two days with a total budget of $550. Most of the equipment, including the $15 modified Home Depot lights, fluorescents, dolly, wood crane, was all built by Bella Donna Films and family members.

Crew/Cast:
Written and Directed by: Arleen Lopez; Editor: Iris Almaraz, Joshua Chynoweth and Toso Mata'u, Director of Photography: Iris Almaraz; Executive Producer: Rina Fernandez; Produced by: Arleen Lopez and Iris Almaraz; CAST: Jayson - Jared LeBaron; Emma - Rina Fernandez; Tony - Ryan Quintana.

Flix #2— “Time Lost”

Albert Johnson's baby girl was just over a month-old when he was arrested and charged with two counts of rape. After 11 years in prison a DNA test exonerated him from one of the two charges. Time Lost delves into Albert's story as he attempts to reconnect with his teenaged children whose childhood he missed. Albert's story sheds light to the larger workings of our police and justice system. If DNA proves innocence in a black and white, what happens when the results are gray?

SYNOPSIS :
“TIME LOST” Short Film: 18 min.
If DNA proves innocence in a black and white world, what happens when the results are gray?

FILMMAKER :
Writer/Director Carla Gutiérrez is a native of Peru . After studying art at Williams College , she worked in the advertising industry in New York . Carla then moved to Washington D.C. where she was the supervising producer on Telemundo's Linea Directa, a weekly Spanish-language educational program. Carla also associate produced a national Spanish-language media campaign on lead poisoning awareness. carlagu@earthlink.net

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS:
Princess Grace Award Recipient, 2003

Flix#3— “La Puta”

Gaby is growing up much too fast and struggling to find her identity. Her trials are beyond her self-indulgent mother's ability to cope with. Luckily for her, the local town whore (La Puta) has a heart of gold and is doing her best to help the girl out by giving her some much needed advice on dealing with overly anxious boys and mother's with hardships beyond their daughter's comprehension. Meanwhile, Chencha (Gaby's mother) is so wrapped up in finding her dark knight that Gaby takes the role of mother and Chencha becomes the irresponsible daughter. "La Puta" is the story of three women who, like the town they live in, are stuck in between opposing streams of life.

Note from Iris Almaraz - Writer/Director:
I learned much about the art of filmmaking while working as a waitress at the world famous International House of Pancakes (IHOP), mostly on the weekends, when she WAS NOT serving short stacks or funny faces. Iris has been the dictator who worked for twenty hours a day whipping her stable of slaves into filming and editing what is now "La Puta". However, the sweatshop conditions were not enough to deter the humbled servants who anxiously fulfilled their duty for a mere smile and a cerveza at the end of each day.

The total budget of $4500 of which mostly went to food and traveling expenses. Most of the equipment, including the $15 modified Home Depot lights, fluorescents, dolly, wood crane, was all built by Bella Donna Films and family members. Bella Donna is circumventing concerns impoverished film makers face by building and owning their equipment. Considering the difficulty of submitting a single film to the festivals, three women without a budget submitting four films in a year will be a big accomplishment.

Cast:
Marisol Sacramento – Gaby; Cristina Nava - La Puta; Rina Fernandez – Chencha; David de Leon – Armando; Ronnie Alvarez – Johnny; Tony Acevedos - Store Clerk; Salvador Benavides - Savor in alley; Elizabeth Szekeresh – Elsa; Lucy Florez - Girl in market; Ramon Ontiverros - Gentleman Suiter; Children: Tanner Ziilch Jr., Damiana Rodriguez, Sierra Rodriguez, Davin Riviera, Earnie Vera, and Michael Vera.

Once again, the Flix Screenings will commence immediately following the Vox Box event/interview with Dennis Leoni and presented by Cinespace-- Hollywood .

The schedule is as follows:
The evening will begin at 7:00 PM with cocktails and dinner (optional) followed by a 90 minute interview session by with Writer/Director/Producer Dennis Leoni who will be interviewed by a close and personal friend giving the evening a very intimate look at the life and work of a very outspoken and opinionated filmmaker. Immediately thereafter (between 9-10:00PM ), will begin the Flix Screenings. (See above schedule for short breakdowns)

The Preferred Seating Deal: Since there are only 150 dining seats with an additional 100 spots in the screening area, and a total capacity of 600+. The venue is being offered for free; we will offer those members who make dinner reservations, preferred seating. We encourage you to come dine with us and watch a free movie and make new contacts. You must make dinner reservations directly with CineSpace by calling 323-817-3456. Seating is available on a first come first serve basis.
