NALIP “Self Distribution” Survey--

NALIP is conducting a survey with its members to follow a trend on “Self-Distribution”.

Do you know of a filmmaker that is currently selling their content, documentary, short film, feature film, etc. via the internet? If so, which internet websites are you/they utilizing? (please include URL addresses whenever possible)

And finally…What are your thoughts as to this method of marketing and do you think it is an effective way to market independent fare which otherwise would never reach the greater masses/public?

Your response is appreciated by Tues., April 5 and you can respond directly to membership@nalip.info.

TotalAXIS presents: VozBox with Dennis Leoni

Join TotalAXIS on Tuesday, April 12th, 2005 for our premiere installment of a new “Conversation with…” style series titled “Voz-Box”. The purpose of this series is to give voice to a generation of up and coming filmmakers and entertainers in the U.S. who are often ignored and are underrepresented. Although current trends statistically tell us that Latinos lag in the participation of mainstream media; we seek to motivate aspiring entertainers to know who their allies are in the industry as well as to network with those who engage in “The Business of Entertainment.”

The evening will begin at 7:00 PM with cocktails and dinner (optional) followed by a 90 minute interview session by with Writer/Director/Producer/NALIPTrustee Dennis Leoni who will be interviewed by a close and personal friend giving the evening a very intimate look at the life and work of a very outspoken and opinionated filmmaker. Bring your hard hitting questions, this session is for you!

Dennis E. Leoni is a writer/producer/director and the head of Patagonia House, the production company that developed and produced “ Resurrection Blvd. ” for Showtime Networks, in conjunction with Viacom Productions and Paramount Television.

He was born in
Tucson , Arizona , attended the University of Arizona and began his career in the entertainment industry as an actor and stuntman at the famous Western movie location Old Tucson . He has appeared in such films as " Buffalo Soldiers" and "Johnny Mae Gibson, FBI" and the hit television series " Hawaii 5-O. He even robbed a bank on "Sixty Minutes" once. But it was during his time with " Hawaii 5-O" that he made the transition from in front of the camera to working primarily behind the camera. He learned production from the bottom up before writing his first screenplay, returning to the mainland and settling in Los Angeles .

In the years since, Dennis has written, produced and directed programming for most of the major networks and studios, including HBO, Showtime,
Paramount , Disney and Columbia . His various credits include theatrical films, television movies and series such as “The Commish” with Michael Chiklis (“The Shield”) “McKenna” with Jennifer Love Hewitt (“I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Heartbreakers”) “Raven” for CBS, “Covington Cross” for ABC, and “Hull High” for NBC.

His most recent work includes a series pilot titled "Black & White" about an interracial romantic relationship between police officers in Oakland, and “The Guard” a movie about the National Guard in the wake of September 11, both of which he wrote for Showtime; “Angel Of Mercy” an NBC series pilot about an international relief organization; “Almost A Woman” a PBS Masterpiece Theatre, a Peabody Award winner; and the critically acclaimed "Resurrection Blvd.” - the first drama series in the history of American television to be written, produced, directed and starring Latinos - which he created, executive produced, wrote and directed for three seasons, starring Elizabeth Pena (“Lone Star” and “Down And Out In Beverly Hills”) Tony Plana (“Primal Fear“, “J.F.K.”, “Salvador”, “The Three Amigos”) Lou Gossett, Jr. (“An Officer And A Gentleman”, “Roots” and “A Raisin In The Sun”) and Michael Delorenzo (“A Few Good Men” and “New York Undercover”). Patagonia House is now developing several projects, including a new drama series for Touchstone Television, a reality series for TLC and Discovery Networks and a feature film titled "Pistolero."

Dennis has received the prestigious Norman Lear Writers’ Award from the Imagen Foundation. For his work on “
Resurrection Blvd. ” he has received several awards, including multiple Alma Awards, Imagen Awards, GLADD Awards, Golden Eagle Awards, Prism Award Commendations, aVision Award from LEMI, an Impact Award from the NHMC and the inaugural Legacy Award, which was specifically created by NAMIC to honor “ Resurrection Blvd ”. He has also been honored by U.S. Congressmen and women, the California Senate and State Assembly, and many private and civic organizations.

After the interview and Q&A we will host a second NALIP FLIX Shorts screening to be announced next week, then a networking session will follow; an after event to have the participants mix and mingle. The viewing will take place in a highly state of the art digital screening room provided by our friends at CineSpace. (www.Cine-Space.com)

Amy Weber Takes on the Title Role in Marco Santiago’s ‘Diablita’ from Volarefilms

Amy Weber joins Marco Santiago’s high-energy action/comedy film from Volarefilms LLC to play the title role of Diablita. The film is Marco’s surrealistic and twisted take on the Hollywood development process, which he lampoons in “Diablita”.

(PRWEB) March 29, 2005 -– Directed and executive produced by award winning filmmaker and NALIP Member Marco Santiago (El Trafico, Once Upon a Time in the Desert, Into the Border), and with an anticipated production start date of May 21, “Diablita” will be shot as a 35mm short film project.

“Diablita”, Spanish for She Devil, is a satiric and surrealistic lampooning of the Hollywood development process. Filled with irony, hints of double entendre, and hyper reality; the story, ironically, lives in the mainstream. It will deliver high action and high sex appeal, as two beautiful woman engage in a running gun battle resulting from a road rage incident, as energetically described by two Hollywood executives bent on turning an artist’s screenplay into a Hollywood commercial hit. “I like to think of the story as ‘Big Picture’ meets ‘Bad boys II’ with babes," Marco explains. Amy Weber will join Cathy Rankin http://www.cathyrankin.com, who is also set to star in the project.

For information specific to Diablita, visit http://www.diablitamovie.com and http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0451039/.

Don Omar video, "Reggaeton Latino" Added to MTV Rotation

Don Omar's "Reggaeton Latino" music video, co-produced and directed by NALIP Member/Diamante Pictures' Ben DeJesus, has just been added to MTV.com.  The video is now set to become the first all-Spanish video ever played on the regular MTV.  Off the "Chosen Few: El Documental" album, the video is not your typical bootyshaker.  Instead it features rich cultural and archival images of Latino pride and figures in history, intercut with Don Omar performances.

"So far, we've gotten an overwhelmingly positive response to the video," says co-producer/ director Ben DeJesus.  "Having it air in Spanish on MTV would be a huge moment in the growing Latino Hip Hop and Reggaeton movement.  It would be another sign that as Latinos - we are the mainstream."
