Conference VI—Catch the Latino Wave
"600+ Latino Filmmakers Storm Huntington Beach!"
NALIP'sters,
I know that you join me in thanking the tremendous staff and volunteers that put on such a great Conference in Huntington Beach last weekend! We know that it begins with Tery, Erick, Octavio, Jose and Jose, Adam, Guiomar, Ben, Lourdes, Miguel, Manuel and Robb, Evy and Astrid who organized the festivities, brought in the speakers, got us to and from the airport, handled a/v, registration, directions and general good humor. But we know there are many more to thank including HBO, Time Warner, NALIP's indefatigable Board of Directors, Trustees and funders. So thank them when you see them...and be sure to come back next year!
Kathryn Galan, ED
Here's a terrific story on Conference VI:

NALIP's 2005 Latino Writers Lab Takes Form
LATINO WRITERS LAB
--May 4 – 8, 2005 - New York, NY
--September 22-25, 2005 – Santa Monica, CA
The Latino Writers Lab™ is a unique program for NALIP members who aspire to work as professional screenwriters, or who desire to develop a strong, viable screenplay for production or sale. It includes skills development by professional instructors, direct mentoring of the work-in-progress by writer/mentors, and professional lunches on legal and guild information. Only 12 – 15 writers will be selected to participate in this 8-day intensive workshop. The first four-day seminar will be conducted in New York City May 4 - 8, 2005.
All projects accepted and mentored must be developed and rewritten during the Summer of 2005. The second four-day seminar will be held in Santa Monica, CA, September 22-25. Completed scripts (first drafts based on workshop treatments or polished drafts following development input) must be submitted for review by August 28.
Morning sessions in Spring will cover writing principles that make your script more exciting and moving, while simplifying the difficult job of transforming an idea into an unforgettable piece of cinema. Morning sessions in Fall afford each writer detailed work on dramatic scenes, and hone your skill in writing the basic building block of all film and television. Afternoon sessions include detailed discussion of your work-in-progress. Evenings include screenings of 4 successful, well-made feature films from around the world, which are then reviewed, analyzed and discussed in detail in support of your writing and development process.
Morning instruction will be led by Ted Braun, Senior Lecturer in Screenwriting at USC’s School of Cinema-Television. Project instructor/mentors include Harrison Reiner, Instructor in Screenwriting, UCLA School of Film and Television; Chip Diggins, producer/former Paramount Pictures Vice President; Marilyn Atlas, (REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES), owner/manager M.A. Management; Edward Pomerantz (CAUGHT), Columbia Professor of Screenwriting and others.
Commitment to Both Seminars and the Writing Work in Between is a must – you’ll thank us! And come away with solid screenplays to show for the effort.

JOIN US FOR THE PREMIERE SCREENING OF REBECCA A. RODRIGUEZ’ FEATURE FILM “COMING UP EASY” AT THE REEL WOMEN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
On March 19th, 2005 at Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles, CA, The Reel Women International Film Festival (www.rwiff.com) will present REBECCA A. RODRIGUEZ’ (www.luckyheadfilms.com) feature film debut COMING UP EASY. Produced independently in Portland, Oregon and inspired by actual events, the film tells the story of two Sisters battling to break the cycle of domestic violence in their family. A self-taught writer / director, Rodriguez has earned a solid reputation with such short films as “Soul Collectors”, “Floater” and “Blind Mice”. “Manner of Living” her fourth short film, is due out later this month. Showing at festivals such as The Seattle International Film Festival, Philadelphia Festival of World Cinema, American Short Shorts (Japan & Singapore) and Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, Rodriguez drives her career with fierce determination.
Coming Up Easy stars Meg Foster, Ellis Williams, and Robert Blanche. Portland actors David A. Greene, Pam Mahon and Daniel Anderson also star in this dark but sometimes humorous exploration of family dysfunction and wounds that never heal.
In the spirit of heightening awareness on the issue of domestic violence, the filmmakers have dedicated the screening to Break The Cycle (www.breakthecycle.org), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate and empower youth to build lives and communities free from domestic and dating violence.
